  1. yep freytown, good old days. our deer drives were about all the things that meant the most to us, no one went w/o venison, and I doubt it's possible to put on a deer drive like we used to do. the memories they can't take from us. i get reports from friends about what goes on now a days. 71 is very young. you keep having fun.

  2. Drivemaster= Ayatolla, Generalissimo, Supreme Commander, El Jefe.  Standers get placed according to the battle plan, you don't move, or you get removed from the drive. Drivers, they are the dismounted cavalry, paired off with experienced drivers and they do as they are told. Weapons check, no unsafe questionable weapons, everyone wears highly visible orange clothing. A well orchestrated deer drive is a ballet on a small military scale. If you don't like being told what to do and how to do it, you won't be on our deer drives.

  3. Stand behind my soldiers, or stand in front of them. Semper Fi, and God Bless the Republic of the United States of America. Don't like my country..... then leave..

Chesty Puller once said, " there is a whole lot more air out there then meat, 6 clicks up and squeeze that trigger"

  4. I won't be able to make opening day next Saturday. But I'm going take down my Remington model 8, which I traded  for back in 1968 for a couples days labour bucking bales of hay, and give it a thourough cleaning. If If I can't be out there then I'll be out there in spirit. Let's see what this all develops into. Wingshooting NY deer. About as much fun as a man could ever ask for. Anyone got a Remington model 8?

  5. what in bloody sam hill am i going to do with my Remington model 8 ?

My Remington model 8 hangs on a rack collecting dust. Recoil operated just like an A-5, the genetics are obvious. The A-5 hangs on the same rack, collecting the same dust. Is it still legal to drive deer in NY or did the facists from Bagdad I mean Albany outlaw deer drives?

  6. if this is what hunting  NY has turned into do we really want to return after almost 50 years ? i wonder... how many of you remember the community deer drives, the massive outpouring of solidarity amoung neighbors, the "huntmaster", the rules and the battle plan for each hunt. no one cared abouty property lines, no one turned a blind eye to help, and it is now just one big distant memory. anyone out there remember and care to discuss this.  the good old days...

all that activity on the other side of the fence may actually help you mr. bundy. the deer may just alter their travel routes, and if you study the situation you might find the deer more on your side of the fence. saturation deer condo blinds...... get a local pilot to fly you over and do some ariel recon. take photos. could be serendipity

Rule #1, never tell a man he has an ugly wife. Rule #2, never tell a man he can not shoot, till you have have seen him handle a weapon. Rule # 3, a weapon in the hands of one man can be accurate and deadly, in the hands of another man, not so accomplished. As a pilot, I will offer this bit of wisdom:: " It's never the plane, it's always the pilot". ☺

the .44 mag with the proper bullet, proper shot placement, out to 100 yards will kill deer just fine. there are alot better cartridges. it depends on you the shooter, how much practice you invest along with picking your shots. unless you are willing to invest the time, ammo, and effort to learn this round, choose a cartridge with more energy. only you know your capabilities and skills.  good luck hunting.

  12. hi bk. we have always used a jack rabbit in distress call.

everything hinges on if a bear is in earshot. if a bear comes on in, his head will be down, trying to scent the rabbit, bears can't see well but their snout is the homing device. this method seems to work better in thick brush, bears can be tough. good luck

  13. Yes sir I was born and raised in the Empire State, dairy farm boy, hunting  and fishing and trapping, but the reality of life is I am a long way from home!

It's been 45 years since I last lived in NYS. Seems like a week ago. Talk about high velocity passing of time. The bugle sounded, service and sacrafice, the four corners of the world, places I will always remember, places I have already forgotten.   Can not say I have not been blessed by having had the opportunities to hunt and fish all over the world. Africa, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, Europe, Australia, the big dirty sandbox, just a big distant fog now.                                                   No matter where I was, the Monday before Thanksgiving I always remembered. No where in the world have I missed more and thought about as deeply as Western  NY.

Never had more fun, more pleasure then running around the hills of western NY. Deer hunting, grouse thickets, chuck shooting, squirrel'ing, busting  cottontails in the thickets, chasing bears, coon hunting, trapping, playing hooky to be trout fishing, and even though it seems like yesterday, it's bloody close to half a century!

My family, owned plenty land. Nary a time I was told I could not hunt or fish or trap by anyone. Those deer drives, seems like yesterday

The EXODUS from NY, well founded and understood, all the time being asked why I want to go back to a place like NY.

Indeed, I am a very long way from home. But there is no where I would rather be. I do hope there are some old timers that read this, and can understand why I love NY so much. No where in the world is there a place like NY.

I have been back a few times thru the decades to hunt and fish.

Hope to hear from you soon.
