Why no rifles in some shotgun only areas
Doc replied to Borngeechee's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
I believe that it is local politicians who are the vehicle for getting these laws changed. At least that was the case in our county. The effort was begun by a Town Supervisor and then moved into the Ontario Board of Supervisors who drafted a resolution to start the path through the state legislature. So it would appear that local politicians have a large influence over such matters. The Board of Supervisors of a county also can have a great deal to do with killing off such changes. -
I'm curious about what you all think about dead deer in warm weather. We have already had a situation posted here in this forum, where the deer was not recovered when shot, and an overnight situation in some warmer kind of weather resulted. It happens fairly frequently, I would say. Certainly it is not unusual. So has anybody figured out a "time vs. temperature" guess-timate of when a deer might go bad. For example a deer that has spent the entire night in the woods where the temperature maybe only went down to 60 degrees .... is the meat still likely to be good? How about 50 degrees? How about 70 degrees and you found the deer within 8 hours. You get what I mean? Where is the break-off point where you start wondering about the meat? You can't just go by the smell .... lol... even a fresh killed deer stinks when you first open it up.

Hunters spend jillions of dollars on doe urine, estrous scents, etc., etc. So, since no one has successfully interviewed a deer yet, the question is, "Do they work?" The only thing I can go by is personal experiences and the experiences of other hunters. So I thought I would ask. What kinds of experiences have you people had with deer scents, and how effective would you judge them to be? Now, I'm not talking about experiences that can be explained by possible coincidence, but rather things that have occurred that you are very sure that wouldn't have happened if you had not used the scent. Personally I had one experience where using a drag-rag definitely worked. I had one time (out of many attempts) where a buck followed my trail exactly with his nose glued to the ground following that drag-rag scent. He passed right through my shooting lane at 15 yards, right where I had walked with that rag. The deer was not what I was looking for so I didn't shoot, but the whole experience left me a believer. So how about the rest of you? What have you seen regarding the use of deer scents?

I could see that working. All that breeding stuff is based on photo-periodism ... right?

I'm afraid it is just another expression of welfare mentality. This whole country has a sub-culture of entitlement, and way too many people judge the value of government by the level of benefits they receive from them. For those people with that mentality, it's not the size of the bribe, but simply the fact that there is a bribe.
-
No, I have a chip on my shoulder about blatant abuse of government funds, and the corruption of buying votes with public tax resources. Bribes-for-votes paid for with my money does kind of upset me a bit. The whole give-away program has a disgusting odor to it.
-
So, how fresh is this stuff? I mean even the ranch deer are not in estrous yet are they? Do they have some way of bringing does into estrous on demand? But it seems to me that the doe in estrous scent has to be something that was gathered almost a year ago. Does that make it still convincing to the deer? Or is this another case of a product that we buy, "just in case" it might work. I ask simply because I really don't know.

You don't for a minute think that the timing of this give-away is purely coincidental do you? You are witnessing why it is so hard to unseat incumbents. They have the funds (your funds) to basically bribe their constituents. They don't even worry about how blatant it is anymore. What really is ugly is that it actually works. Oh there may be those that are hard-core anti-Cuomo that will take the bribe and not honor it with a vote, but there are also plenty of not-so-committed voters that will see it as a caring gift from a benevolent government leader who "really cares for us"...... lol. It's like the welfare mentality that creates a huge solid block of voters simply because they measure the value of a candidate by how many goodies he supplies.

I have noticed that the bugs have backed off quite a bit. That was one of my main concerns was that I would be on stand waving my arms around trying to combat swarms of mosquitos. Another piece of good news is that my best shooting form is when I am not needing bulky cold-weather gear. I have not been a big supporter of this early start but now I am not so sure. Now if I can just get my fall workload taken care of maybe things will work out ok. Let's wait and see.

No, actually the money being handed out by Cuomo is partly my money. Why is it that people think that the only ones who have paid in the taxes are those with kids? Those people who have kids already get tax exemptions. I paid in excessive taxes ..... where's my cut. You bet it's redistribution of wealth.

We have had a few replies that do express feelings of entitlement. But really, is there really any doubt that this is a government handout or give-away? How else can you describe it? It is not a tax "give-back" because there is selectivity as to who the recipients are. I think we even know the purpose, and it really is absolutely no different than welfare handouts. The government discovered a long time ago that perceived gifts from the government result in votes for incumbents. As to what I would do with it if I had a check coming, there is no question that I would have no problem spending it. But the suggestion previously of donating it to the Astorino campaign certainly sounds like something I would be interested in. To go along with that I would also send a note to Uncle Andy as to the fact that his bribe was being sent to his competitor...... just to rub his nose in it. Look if there is indeed a surplus in collected tax money, then handle it the right way. lower the collection rates for the future so that it doesn't happen again, and then let the surplus dwindle from natural attrition. There is no real need for all this election year grandstanding. But that is not the way our state government thinks.

And so I heard on the news about the hunter that was mistaken for a squirrel and killed by a family friend. He actually said that he thought the guy was a squirrel. I would have guessed that any squirrel hunting accident would definitely have to be self-inflicted, but I guess I would be wrong. So now I am re-thinking the possible need for blaze orange while bowhunting.

Separate spots for each broadhead. Save yourselves some money. Actually I use one of those cheapy Styrofoam targets with 4 targets on the face. The fact is that I have a 4-spot 8-1/2" x 11" paper target that I pin to a "block" for field points as well. I have to blow a shot pretty bad to have any two arrows actually contacting. I don't like cracked nocks and punctured vanes and dinged-up shafts. Adding broadheads into groups is just asking for real ugly damage. What can get real ugly is when you get contact that causes damage that isn't all that obvious, like a cracked nock that goes off like a dry-fire the next time that arrow is shot. Or if you really want to get gross and disgusting, think about the next shot of a carbon arrow that has been dinged up or slit by a broadhead.
-
I can't even imagine what kind of damage one would get if they hit a mature bear with one of these smaller cars. Here's one to ponder....What if there was a collision with a mature bear and one of these smart-cars at expressway speeds. That would be ugly messy.

Look, don't be confused into thinking that this is some kind of Cuomo pro-family plan. It is a simple scam to buy votes with public tax funds and that is as bad a "social program abuse" as I can think of. And no, I do not believe that just because you are fertile you deserve a government handout. I'm not really sure what is so "family oriented" about that kind of government give-away, but to me that is simply another welfare grant .... that is if I chose to ignore the obvious political motivation that tells the real story about this give-away.
-
I raised a couple of my own, so your not telling me anything new about paying taxes. However, I never had the government handing me back some of that tax money simply because we happen to be fertile. That's kind of a new concept that will take a bit of getting used to. At any rate, my comment was meant more as a joke than a real complaint. But I must say that this blatant political ploy of buying votes with my tax money is something that I find a bit irritating.

I guess I see no point in playing your stupid game of tit-for-tat for page after page as your sniping often winds up. I think people have made it clear that they aren't interested in seeing that kind of childish nonsense.
-
I hope all you people with kids appreciate my share of tax donation to you. ....... You're welcome.
-
What may be happening these days is that a lot of kids are drifting into hunting without any parental or mentor guidance. If they are picking up all of this stuff on their own, there is nobody around to explain things like wounding game and the responsibilities of doing your best to avoid such things. They don't seem to be able to gauge when their shooting is adequate or what the consequences of inadequate proficiency really is. That is why, just like the original poster, it is good that some people take the time to at least explain a little something about the necessity of marksmanship.
-
Hey, the mad stalker/sniper strikes again .... lol. I hope I didn't offend you or sound like I am criticizing your lifestyle.....lol. But I will admit that I have never sent a text message or even have the equipment to do so, do not sit on the couch all day playing video games, and don't walk around wired up for constant communications. So what? But oh my .... I do own a computer.
-
I agree with that to a certain extent, but I am glad that people still get upset with illegal activity by the "other guy". Now if we can just go from being upset to being involved in reporting, there may eventually be less to be "upset" over.
-
Lol .... I guess if TV can have re-runs, forums can too. By the way, a pugilist is a boxer. I have no idea what the connection is between a boxer and a paper plate and bowhunting, but then that's another story .... ha-ha.

I ran across an interesting article on exactly this topic of landowner liability. It indicates that the issue is a whole lot more complicated than the DEC website synopsis indicates. http://injury.findlaw.com/accident-injury-law/premises-liability-who-is-responsible.html Also, I wonder if this is like so many other laws where there is one version for Environmental Conservation Law and an entirely different set of statutes for civil law. Laws are written in such ambiguous terms that the interpretation becomes the most important element. Look at that quote: "This protection does not apply in cases of willful or malicious failure to guard or warn against dangers." Imagine how that could be tortured and twisted by a couple of attorneys.....lol. Again, if I truly had to have a credible answer, a few bucks to a family lawyer might be the prudent way to get answers.
