Yeah a little dab behind each ear and you're ready to go.

Yeah, he probably would walk over and rip into it like a cardboard box and eat the contents.

There really always has been only one thing that would get me into work. It has nothing to do with making a name or climbing a ladder or some wonderful title, or a position of status. Quite simply, the motivator for me has always been money. Not the promise of money off in the future, but money paid for work accomplished. So when somebody told me that I would perform extra work but with no extra compensation, that didn't happen very often. And when it did happen, they were not dealing with a happy satisfied employee. So the bottom line is that old saying, "you get what you pay for" really does apply. Terms of work shouldn't be based on how much free time they can scam out of you. If that is their M.O. then it probably is a shyster outfit that I wouldn't want to work for anyway.

Why no rifles in some shotgun only areas
Doc replied to Borngeechee's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Ha-ha, and you can target shoot for hours before season with it and still have a shoulder left. With my old 12 ga. deerslayer, I was always hoping and praying that my 3 to 5 practice shots every year showed good groups so I didn't have to do any sight changes. Damn, I remember some years when something must have moved the scope. It wasn't long before I started getting into a flinch situation wit the pounding, and had to go through way too many shots with that shoulder mangler. Now practice is fun. -
Hey, there is some good news! congrats on the early success. Heck, now you can get out and do some small game hunting ..... lol.

I'm not sure ho or why a thread called "Posted Signs" is not completely turned toward coyote control .... lol, but I'll play along. It seems to me that in our area, the coyote is at the top of his food chain with only disease to control their numbers. Certainly Mother Nature knows how to do a very good job of controlling populations, but it is not always the most kind or humane way of doing business. Fortunately, one of the legitimate purposes for hunting /trapping of animals is to help control populations. More hunting/trapping....more control. There is nothing healthy about leaving the residents of the top end of the food chain to a lingering fate of disease or starvation. We don't do that to deer, and it probably is even more important not to do that to coyotes. So if there are those that want to thin the coyote population a bit, more power to them. They are performing a legitimate wild game management activity.

Yup, I'm sure that is a possibility. Also, all you need is for some anti to start a campaign against any attempts to implement rifles, and they can influence Town Supervisors. So anyone looking to get a supervisor to champion a rifle bill had better be sure to have all the local rod and gun clubs and as many hunters as possible across the county on board for counter arguments to offset any mouthy antis. -
You know practice doesn't have to be hundreds of shots. I don't spend a lot of time up on the range at any one practice session. I find that the best results are about 20 arrows every other night. I used to get into these marathon shooting sessions, and all I ever accomplished was getting fatigued and starting to build in poor shooting form. Time really shouldn't be a limiter unless you have to travel to get to a range. It doesn't take a lot of time to step out back and fire off 10 or 20 arrows.

My solution would be to take as many quality pictures as possible and wave bye-bye as he kept on walking. I don't need some stroke or heart attack over a bear that I'm not even sure I could eat. I say that because I have already done the stroke thing, and I have never tasted bear meat and don't even know if I would like it. A man's gotta know his limitations .... lol.

Unpaid mandatory overtime is pure and simple slavery. No, that's not meant to be funny, it is a simple fact. I never minded putting extra free hours to get the job done, when it was MY idea. Mandatory overtime decrees without overtime compensation always caused me to dig my heels in and resist. Sometimes I relented because extra time really was required to finish a project. I think there came a time when I saw all this as a scam and a way of screwing employees. I always had a pact with industry, "I won't screw you if you don't screw me". They didn't live up to their end of that pact. That was when I started thinking about early retirement. The downsizing frenzy was simply a way to remove cost via abusing the employees who were left. And then the mandatory uncompensated overtime was to make up for the bodies that had been kicked out. I grabbed a package and bailed. Enough time in the cotton fields .... I'm a free man! No more competing with all those overseas people who we cheerfully gave all our technology to and who have no problem turning their lives over to corporations for a few cents per day. I'm out of that game.

No drag-rag success stories? I thought we would be loaded with them. I had that one undeniable success story with a drag rag, and that was using Tink's off the shelf stuff. But I haven't had it work since. Of course, when using a drag-rag, you do have to go where a buck is likely to cross your trail (during that particular hunting session). But, I did see some potential with that one episode. I was just curious what other people's experiences were. So far it doesn't sound like a lot of people have had a lot of luck with that stinky stuff. I know there are people who claim wild success with artificial scrapes using drip tubes and other procedures. haven't tried it myself yet so I have no personal experiences with that tactic.

I believe that it is local politicians who are the vehicle for getting these laws changed. At least that was the case in our county. The effort was begun by a Town Supervisor and then moved into the Ontario Board of Supervisors who drafted a resolution to start the path through the state legislature. So it would appear that local politicians have a large influence over such matters. The Board of Supervisors of a county also can have a great deal to do with killing off such changes. -
I'm curious about what you all think about dead deer in warm weather. We have already had a situation posted here in this forum, where the deer was not recovered when shot, and an overnight situation in some warmer kind of weather resulted. It happens fairly frequently, I would say. Certainly it is not unusual. So has anybody figured out a "time vs. temperature" guess-timate of when a deer might go bad. For example a deer that has spent the entire night in the woods where the temperature maybe only went down to 60 degrees .... is the meat still likely to be good? How about 50 degrees? How about 70 degrees and you found the deer within 8 hours. You get what I mean? Where is the break-off point where you start wondering about the meat? You can't just go by the smell .... lol... even a fresh killed deer stinks when you first open it up.

Hunters spend jillions of dollars on doe urine, estrous scents, etc., etc. So, since no one has successfully interviewed a deer yet, the question is, "Do they work?" The only thing I can go by is personal experiences and the experiences of other hunters. So I thought I would ask. What kinds of experiences have you people had with deer scents, and how effective would you judge them to be? Now, I'm not talking about experiences that can be explained by possible coincidence, but rather things that have occurred that you are very sure that wouldn't have happened if you had not used the scent. Personally I had one experience where using a drag-rag definitely worked. I had one time (out of many attempts) where a buck followed my trail exactly with his nose glued to the ground following that drag-rag scent. He passed right through my shooting lane at 15 yards, right where I had walked with that rag. The deer was not what I was looking for so I didn't shoot, but the whole experience left me a believer. So how about the rest of you? What have you seen regarding the use of deer scents?

I could see that working. All that breeding stuff is based on photo-periodism ... right?

I'm afraid it is just another expression of welfare mentality. This whole country has a sub-culture of entitlement, and way too many people judge the value of government by the level of benefits they receive from them. For those people with that mentality, it's not the size of the bribe, but simply the fact that there is a bribe.
-
No, I have a chip on my shoulder about blatant abuse of government funds, and the corruption of buying votes with public tax resources. Bribes-for-votes paid for with my money does kind of upset me a bit. The whole give-away program has a disgusting odor to it.
-
So, how fresh is this stuff? I mean even the ranch deer are not in estrous yet are they? Do they have some way of bringing does into estrous on demand? But it seems to me that the doe in estrous scent has to be something that was gathered almost a year ago. Does that make it still convincing to the deer? Or is this another case of a product that we buy, "just in case" it might work. I ask simply because I really don't know.
-
You don't for a minute think that the timing of this give-away is purely coincidental do you? You are witnessing why it is so hard to unseat incumbents. They have the funds (your funds) to basically bribe their constituents. They don't even worry about how blatant it is anymore. What really is ugly is that it actually works. Oh there may be those that are hard-core anti-Cuomo that will take the bribe and not honor it with a vote, but there are also plenty of not-so-committed voters that will see it as a caring gift from a benevolent government leader who "really cares for us"...... lol. It's like the welfare mentality that creates a huge solid block of voters simply because they measure the value of a candidate by how many goodies he supplies.

I have noticed that the bugs have backed off quite a bit. That was one of my main concerns was that I would be on stand waving my arms around trying to combat swarms of mosquitos. Another piece of good news is that my best shooting form is when I am not needing bulky cold-weather gear. I have not been a big supporter of this early start but now I am not so sure. Now if I can just get my fall workload taken care of maybe things will work out ok. Let's wait and see.
-
No, actually the money being handed out by Cuomo is partly my money. Why is it that people think that the only ones who have paid in the taxes are those with kids? Those people who have kids already get tax exemptions. I paid in excessive taxes ..... where's my cut. You bet it's redistribution of wealth.

We have had a few replies that do express feelings of entitlement. But really, is there really any doubt that this is a government handout or give-away? How else can you describe it? It is not a tax "give-back" because there is selectivity as to who the recipients are. I think we even know the purpose, and it really is absolutely no different than welfare handouts. The government discovered a long time ago that perceived gifts from the government result in votes for incumbents. As to what I would do with it if I had a check coming, there is no question that I would have no problem spending it. But the suggestion previously of donating it to the Astorino campaign certainly sounds like something I would be interested in. To go along with that I would also send a note to Uncle Andy as to the fact that his bribe was being sent to his competitor...... just to rub his nose in it. Look if there is indeed a surplus in collected tax money, then handle it the right way. lower the collection rates for the future so that it doesn't happen again, and then let the surplus dwindle from natural attrition. There is no real need for all this election year grandstanding. But that is not the way our state government thinks.

And so I heard on the news about the hunter that was mistaken for a squirrel and killed by a family friend. He actually said that he thought the guy was a squirrel. I would have guessed that any squirrel hunting accident would definitely have to be self-inflicted, but I guess I would be wrong. So now I am re-thinking the possible need for blaze orange while bowhunting.
