I guess I can't see any reason why not. I'm in that high risk age bracket. Is there some reason why I shouldn't?

It used to be a massive event at the DEC region 8 complex at Avon until they just decided to dissolve it. Thousands of area people became acquainted with hunting and fishing and trapping at the event. Thousands of young kids were introduced to outdoor activities that they would normally never hear about. But for some reason, the DEC didn't feel it was a good thing for them to be associated with.

What they can't achieve with these crazy laws they will achieve through taxation. Even at the pump if that is what they have to do to get their way. Consider for a minute how they used taxation to control citizen smoking. They have perfected the technique of behavior modification through taxation. They can do what ever they want and the voter will never rebel. At least not here in NYS. Yes, the voters can get as angry as they want, but that anger never gets as far as the voting booth. We ARE a socialist state already and NYS government has mastered the technique of using the power that that system affords them. You can buy what ever you want, but getting to use a product that the state government does not approve of may be a very different story. There is no 2nd Amendment for car choice.

Safer????? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Now that the southern border is wide open, letting everybody and anybody in, including gang members, unvetted terrorists and drug dealers and representatives of drug cartels and fentanyl runners. But now the Taliban has its own homeland and home to every terrorist organization in the world, and we have lost every hint of intelligence on the ground in that area. We have handed over all the modern equipment of war to the terrorists so that they can now use it against us or our allies or simply as sales items to raise money to finance more terror activities. We gave away our energy independence so we are once again slaves to countries that hate our guts? We have done away with sensible financial practices allowing inflation to run rampant destroying the value of our currency. We have let the progressives run nearly every aspect of our freedoms and lives with their desire to turn our system of government to socialism. We have government agencies and branches that are showing they are more crooked than a bunch of thieves We have major cities that want to defund the police forces. We have a majority of the news outlets who are simply the public relations arm of the democrat and socialist parties. We have a blithering idiot as our president who cannot even string words together in an intelligent sentence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And you ask if we are safer as a nation than we were a year ago. Is there any reason that anyone that has half a brain would ever think we are. Ask this question of the Biden voters and see what kinds of answers you get. This jerk is still getting 30% -40% approval rating. Apparently there are still a lot of people who stumble along quite contented with how things are going.

So sometime in the next 14 years we are going to have to figure out how to blanket the landscape with those huge wind farms and acres and acres of solar farms so that we can handle the new electric demands of transportation. How much of the national electronic grid will have to be rebuilt or fortified? Well I suppose the government can also put out mandates involving the elimination of non-transport electronic drains on the grid system. They are getting good at regulating and controlling the citizens.

Fred had a pretty decent line of compound bows that he marketed and built. So I am sure that if he were still alive and functioning today, he would be competitive with the best of them. Yes, and he likely would have been selling a line of crossbows too. But I am sure that his favorite hunting weapon would have been his recurve.

Of course we already had our opening day of gun season here in 8N, and it was absolutely dead quiet completely through that entire useless season. I don't think anyone wanted to do battle with the mosquitos and the heat.......including me......lol.

Same old place that I always go. A couple hundred yards up the hill behind my house to a plateau half-way up the hill where I have a couple of ground-stands that I use depending on the wind direction. This plateau is a natural escape route for deer down in the valley as soon as the redcoats start marching in towards their stands. It is like a massive deer-drive with me as the stander.

I will never die or be injured from a fall from a treestand. I have a natural defense for such things. It's called fear of heights. Yes my productivity in my hunting went down, but I really don't care. I am safe from the fate of my very young cousin (he was in his 20's) who died from a fall out of his treestand several years ago. I actually know a few people who have come crashing out of their stands. Most of them were relatively unharmed when compared to that cousin.

Late summer Trapping education event.
Doc replied to Culvercreek hunt club's topic in Greater Rochester Southern Tier QDMA
I used to trap back when I was a kid, but it's been a whole bunch of years since I had a line out. Since my trapping days, the requirement for a trapping education certificate was put into play. And as a matter of fact, I have forgotten a whole bunch about trapping. I late for this one, but if you become aware of any other trapper education courses, I would be interested in attending. Genesee Valley Trappers Association is just over the hill from my place (10-15 minutes away) and so that would be my preferred location. So if you , or anyone else) hears of another course coming up there, I would appreciate it if you could post a heads up, and I will try to make that one. -
It is only family that is keeping me here right now. But if they start messing with my basic transportation, I won't really have any choice. I can't afford government experiments in the way I get around. The Democrats have a habit of cutting off supplies and procedures before the technology is ready to go forward. This is just another example. I can't afford Democrats.

How has the US become so divided?
Doc replied to Grouse's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
So what is it about our resident lefties that makes them so sensitive to actually hearing some of the things their commie mainstream news organizations do not want to report on. Who cares if someone is trying to crack through the mainstream socialist news blackouts regarding this wack-job that has wound up in the Whitehouse. Don't be so scared of hearing an opposing viewpoint. It won't hurt you, and you might even learn something. Heaven knows that our lefty voters truly need to learn a lot of things. Be thankful that somebody other than our U.S. version of Pravda is speaking up around here once in a while just to try to keep you informed about what your misguided votes have done to us. -
Did the border crises end?
Doc replied to Grouse's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Frankly the Biden screw-ups and anti-US idiotic decisions and scandals are coming at us so fast and furious that it is impossible for any of them to get proper attention all the time. The mainstream media doesn't want to report on any of them, and Fox news seems to be overwhelmed with the volume and magnitude of Biden-isms such that they can only cover a few at a time. -
How the heck did this state and others get into this commie mentality? Is it something in the water or some new kind of pandemic? I would really like to hear from some of our resident pinkos, as to just how they justify voting for these people. I understand that we didn't vote for Hochul, but enough residents voted for Cuomo to set up the crazy nonsense that seems to have taken root in this state and the nation. And when I look at the bigger picture, how do you people justify putting in Biden. My gosh Democrats have to be feeling awful embarrassed by now. How many times do you have to get hit in the head before you finally understand that votes matter. You really do have to treat these elections like something other than a personality contest.

I believe I was about 11 years old when I crafted my first longbow from a hickory stave cut off the hill. I built some crude un-fletched willow arrows and went to the hay mow of our barn to get two pigeons. I plucked them and had my mother cook them up for me. That was my first hunt. Then sometime around 1960 I bought my first commercial recurve. It was a Ben Pearson that started my archery deer hunting. That also was about the time that I went deer hunting with a buddy using my first shotgun ( an old 20 guage bent-barrel Mossberg.

Many people are already "very angry". So what. They don't convert that anger into votes. We have our NYC commies that decide how elections will be coming out. Heck, even out here in upstate NY we have more than our share of libs. It gets worse every year. There really is no end to it.......until eventually we're in so deep in this socialist quagmire and fuzzy thinking that there is no turning back. Maybe we're there already.

No, it was not in the 1980's when compounds were introduced to the NYS bow season. And it was not a generational thing either. I was there when that all happened. I remember when there was a lot of talk about how the compound would become a precedent to start including everything into "Bow season". And you know they were pretty darn far-sighted people who were right on the money. There may even come a day when bow usage will be simply merged in with gun season. I guess a lot of that will come after my time.....thankfully. But I hear more and more people questioning why a "bow season" is even necessary anymore. As technology continues to take over bow season implements, their argument gets stronger and stronger.

OK.....In some areas we have completed the opening weekend of Firearms Deer season
Doc replied to Doc's topic in Deer Hunting
Well, I am not so sure that I could survive the mosquitos that we have right now. I have never seen them so vicious. I don't think the deer would be interested in approaching a critter that was swinging wildly trying to keep from being drained of blood. I suspect that the DEC is not getting what they wanted out of this early season. It kind of is turning out to be a lot of controversy created over nothing. -
So with all the controversy and theorizing and such about this early season, what are your observations. In our part of 8N, I doubt that the deer are even aware that there is a deer season open. I have heard more shooting from squirrel hunters in past years. I checked out a very popular state hunting land parking lot and it was completely empty at 1:00 PM. Two questions: 1. Where the heck are all the hunters? 2. Did all this crazy messing with seasons really accomplish anything at all other than stirring up controversy So what are the observations of others that live or hunt in the affected areas?
-
Well, I will not be affected by the new laws regarding blaze orange. During firearms deer seasons, I am always a glowing orange beacon.....lol. HOWEVER..... We must not assume that because it is a law now that the lack of blaze orange is a signal that the coast is clear to shoot. Remember that there are people out performing outdoor chores and hikers and mountain bikers and the law does not apply to them. Nothing replaces good safety mentality. Check out the background behind whatever you are shooting at.

To be honest, I don't believe that there has been any scientific study done on the effects pro or con regarding masks. There has been a lot of layman speculation and guesswork, but I haven't heard of any credible studies actually being conducted. Has any of you heard of such studies? On the other hand, Trump's vaccines have been studied to death, not only by lab studies but also actual vaccinations of millions of people. I had no fear of the big dreaded and horrifying needle.....lol.
-
Is it firearms only, or can you hunt with a bow during that season?
-
It is probably more likely that deer get back to diurnal activity after gun season is the shortage of food leaves them little choice at that time of year. I don't know about anyone else, but Actual gun hunting days seem to be pretty darn quiet after opening weekend, and the only deer moving at all are those that are kicked up by other gun hunters still-hunting. Well anyway, we will see this year. There won't be any guessing after we actually see what happens, one way or another.

I remember when crossing the road out front we used to stare at any car that happened to go by because chances are it was somebody we knew. Now it seems that that same road is just a constant stream of cars. And when the fall leaves are in full color, you may not be able to get across the road at all without a good long wait. I remember climbing half way up the huge hill in the dark on opening day and looking down on the highway below, seeing the continuous long line of headlights that looked like a huge snake coming down the valley. Now opening day traffic doesn't look much heavier that normal work-day traffic. I remember back in the early 60's, it was kind of unusual to ever see a bowhunter in the woods on state land. It almost seemed like a wilderness hunt (35 miles outside of Rochester). Quite different today. I remember when we didn't have to lock the door to the house. I remember when most of our neighbors were small family farmers. Those lands are being covered up with houses now.
