It was a different world than when I was a kid 20 years ago. I’m sure that saying has echoed through the ages, and will continue to do so until the end.

Sorry, that was harsh on my part, and not necessary. I guess I’m just of the mind that others should be able to live however they want with no concern about what I or others think about them.

I’m sure that really hurt you as well. My feelings go out to you for the trauma that must have caused.

I was driving my wife to a Dr appointment last week and noticed Daniels Road State Forest in the Greenfield area. It looks like hunting is allowed there as well. I don’t know much about it. Today my amazing wife and I welcomed our second little girl into this world. I just wanted to show off this beautiful little chunker. Everyone is happy, healthy, and we’re looking forward to taking her home to meet her big sister tomorrow. I will say I read a lot of the “Live From the Woods” posts today to help distract from the anxiety:)

I think I was a senior in High School when this one was on the hoof. Everyone in the area was hunting him, and I was fortunate enough to see him from the road a couple of times in a bean field next to where I hunted. A local guy (who has since passed on) took him during first shotgun season that year. He was featured in the old “Rack Magazine” under the title “The Bone Gap Monster”. I wish I could find a back issue of that. He was quite a deer.

This time of year, I spend a lot of time reading and responding to "4-H Project Record Books". It's really a lot of fun to read about the projects these kids have been doing, and seeing the learning that has occurred through their involvement. I see a lot of "I learned not to stab myself with the needle" and such. However, I see several that really warm my heart and make me proud to be doing the work that I'm doing. I recently read from an 11 year old's book "4-H makes me feel good about myself"...whew. Anyways, it's always special when I see growth in my Shooting Sports kids, case in point, the narrative below. This is from a girl who went from the lowest of lows when her bow malfunctioned at the NYS 4-H Shoot, and after members and volunteers all worked their butts off to get it back together, ended up taking 3rd place in Field Archery. I love it when these kids see the deeper lessons. I always say that we use Shooting Sports (or any number of other projects) as conduits to teach meaningful life skills. Stories like this let me know that I'm being successful in that.

Not saying that it doesn't belong here Grampy, I'm glad I saw it and can follow the discussion. I'm a total newbie with rifle hunting deer, as this year will be my first year with a rifle (outside of muzzleloader). Back in Illinois, it was shotgun only, so the choices were pretty limited on caliber. I'm enjoying learning about these things. I've wounded and lost deer with a 12 gauge slug, so it's certainly up to the hunter. All of those I lost were regrettably due to taking poor shots when I was quite a bit younger. I like to think that I've grown as a hunter and person since then.

This kind of relates to the 22-250 discussion. I am by no means an expert on rifles for deer or balistics, but knowing my own abilities, I would opt for a larger caliber, in hopes that they are more forgiving when it comes to the chance of lesser shot placement. I am interested to learn what others think though since I am such a novice on the topic.

Opinels are cool knives, very inexpensive but great quality. You won’t find any thing that’s much more simple and utilitarian in a folder. You can buy them in all different sizes, from keychain to very large. Below is my #12. I saw a #13 at an auction recently that was even bigger. Yours looks like it’s maybe a #6, which is a great size for pocket carry. The lock on them is primitive, but pretty much infallible.

I use HuntStand Pro. It gives me what I need without being too confusing. I tried OnX, but thought HuntStand was easier to use. I primarily use it for finding property boundaries.

I can check one box off of my goals for 2021. I got a bushy tail with my 108 year old Remington while putting out my ground blind.

I found a little time yesterday to bring my shoulder mounts into my office. That plus a few momentos to remind me of home, and I’m thinking it looks pretty darn good.

I've also heard that Department of Defense demand is eating up a lot of production. When we had a discussion with Federal about our program ammunition, they said they have DoD contracts, and then are focusing on high volume calibers, which revolve around recreational shooting. Hunting rounds are further down the list, since there is such a wide range of calibers, and realistically, most hunters are using less than a box of ammunition for hunting purposes each year. That is not verbatim, but is the gist of what I gathered.
