Versatile Hunter’s 2021 hunting journal
Splitear replied to Versatile_Hunter's topic in Member Hunting Journals
One of my fly tying instructors (runs a 4-H club) has been trying to get me to start fly fishing. I'll admit, it looks really fun and relaxing. I just wish I had time to add another hobby. Looks like you guys had a great trip. I've only ever hike around Ausable Chasm, but it's really beautiful -
A great book. He certainly had a way of conveying the moment he was in while writing.

I love Hemingway. I think I'd have to agree, "For Whome the Bell Tolls" is my favorite as well, followed closely by "To Have and to Have Not”.
-
I'm just finishing a fantastic horror novel (maybe could be called a novella) called "Stolen Tongues" by Felix Blackwell. One of the first stories in a long while that creeped me out.
-
You're welcome to stop by Grampy, though I think we have plenty of help. I'm fortunate to have a great group of volunteers that work with our 4-H Program (though I'll always welcome more).

I really never thought to post this here, and now it's last minute. However, if anyone is in the Ballston Spa/Saratoga area, Saratoga County 4-H is hosting a Military Kids Fishing Day out at our 4-H Training Center on September 25th. Free food, t-shirts and giveaways. We are also getting our front pond stocked for easy fishing. Open to all Active Duty and Veteran families. Please call our office today (9/10) by 5:00 to sign-up. I would love to see some forum member families there

9/11 Never forget! What were you doing.....
Splitear replied to ApexerER's topic in General Chit Chat
I was a Junior in High School, and was on my way to school when I heard it on the radio. I still remember the confusion of that day. Every class had it on the TV. I remember being worried because some of the kids were talking about going to war and being drafted. I'll never forget the feeling of unity that followed. It didn't matter where you were on the political spectrum, for a long while we were all Americans. I remember the big thing was to drive with your lights on in remembrance. The worst of days shined a light on the best qualities of what it means to be an American. -
Welcome, and good luck with getting that ADK deer!

The only bucks I have ever had follow/come to scents are little young ones. Same goes with rattling. Now, that can be as much on me as anything, maybe my skills are only good enough to fool the young dumb ones.

Finally got to meet Wooly . And tribute to my brother.

I teared up reading this. A powerful tribute. -
Thank you for this.

I can relate. I can’t relax until I know all of the house chores are done

Our CCE Nutrition Educator is doing a Zoom Training on "Making Jerky and Canning Meat" on October 7th. If anyone is interested, here is some information. I will say that Diane does a great job with her classes. Making Jerky & Canning Meat: Thursday, October 7, 6:00-8:30 pm Learn how to safely make your own jerky in an oven or food dehydrator. Canned meat is tender and makes a quick meal. Learn the steps to safe pressure canning, a process that can be used for preserving vegetables and soups too. Includes a discussion of proper freezing procedures and materials, plus a demonstration of canning meat. I'll get around to it, if she has an interest, right now she's all about princesses and "neigh-neighs" (horses). There is hope though, because she's not afraid of getting dirty. I'm also excited to see our next daughter's personality develop. Yes, that's the preserve. It was a nice walk yesterday. Not too buggy, and we saw some ducks, a heron and a few turtles. She had a lot of fun and slept well last night

I took a hike with my daughter yesterday, and came to the decision that I'm going to sit out bow season this year. There are a few things that have led to this decision: 1. I haven't given myself the time to practice in the off season this year, and I don't want to try to cram a bunch of practice in before next month. 2. My wife is due with our 2nd daughter at the end of October, and I want to be there for her as much as possible in the last part of her pregnancy. I don't think I would be able to sit in a tree stand without feeling guilty that I wasn't home with her. 3. This is the big one: Walking through the woods with my 2 year old yesterday brought it home that these are my last couple of months with just her. I've spent the last 2 1/2 years watching her grow and learn, and I want to cherish these last few months of "us". I think my time this fall would be better spent in nature with her rather than by myself. It's funny, as soon as I came to the realization, I was amazed at how easy it was. I really enjoy the archery season, but there are just some things that are more important. I am very hopeful that I get at least a few days during gun season to get out of the house and hit the deer woods.

If anyone is in the Lake George area this weekend, my band, Big Sky Country, is playing Shepard Park 7:30-9:30 tomorrow (Friday). Should be a great night to be outside enjoying some live music.

LIVE From The Woods 2021 Stories And Pictures Let's Have Em!

Let’s bump this bad boy to the top. I’m hopeful to be in the woods with a gun in my hand sometime over the long weekend. -
Morning temps in the 50’s works for me. I do hope the mosquitoes aren’t too bad, but that’s part of it I guess.

September 1st.

Now it has. I’m hoping to get out for some tree rats next Monday morning.

All looks good to me. The 30 minutes before and after sunrise/set is a nice change in my opinion. It is like this in Illinois, and it felt weird walking out of the woods with plenty of shooting light left. I also wear orange regardless, so no big change for me and it's nice to know where other hunters are when I'm in the woods.

I put in an order for some 300 Savage this past summer, but cancelled before it shipped because I found a better deal locally. Really wasn't much of an issue to order, and seemed like shipping other than the cost of it wasn't a big deal either.

Powder-Patch-Ball or it won't shoot at all A little mantra that one of my Muzzleloading Instructors pushes pretty hard. Congratulations, I'm sure you'll have fun with it.
