I would like to ask why would you take all that time to make 222 brass out of 223 brass, when you can go on line and buy 222 brass. Are you using 223 brass or military 5.56 brass for resizing. Military brass is harder than 223 brass and you also have the crimped primer pocket to deal with. You may also want to trim the 223 brass back some before sizing.

Guy you asked us what we thought would be a good caliber for your first rifle. The best advice I can give you is this, we won’t be shooting your gun you will be. Find a gun and a cal. You like shoot it if you like it buy and enjoy it. it’s your gun not yours.

If you are going to use the gun for deer and maybe black bears and you have shoulder issues. I would go with a 7mm-08 or a 308 that’s all the gun you need to kill a deer.

Didn’t hunt till Monday heard 2 shots all day

This is what I do after shooting a deer with a bow. I wait 15min. then go and try to find my arrow and blood where I shot the deer. If I find my arrow I look to see what kind of hit I made I look to see how far up the shaft the blood goes, and if it is a lung, hart liver or a gut shot. If it’s a lung shot I’ll wait a ½ hour, hart liver 2hr’s and a gut shot 6 to 8 hours. If there is no blood or arrow I wait a 1/2hr and track till I find blood or the arrow. Then decide how long to wait. This is what I do if I don’t see the deer go down. If I see the deer go down then I wait a ½ hour the go look for my arrow and follow the blood trail to the deer. I all ways follow the blood trail even if I see the deer go down.

What do you think are the best hours to hunt ?
Larry replied to LJC's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
All day sunup to sundown -
All I’m going to say is if pass on it on the first day then you should pass on it on the last day. If you shoot it on the last day the you should of shot it on the first.

Hey here’s one with the 150ft setback for bow hunting. Could you be charged with hunting over a pre-establish bait pile. if deer are feeding out of a birdfeeder in someone’s yard. Just something to think about. I know the 150ft setback was put in place so we could hunt more urban areas just wondering if it could be a double edge sword.

Very Diverse State land 9P "Honey Hole " Card Pull
Larry replied to Hang Em High's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
Nice pic’s like the fishers and the bobcat. There is a lot of state land in 9P. I hunt there. cut my hunting teeth on three places Bully Hill SF nice place not just for deer there’s some nice Grouse hunting and even got Snow Shoes there. Rattle Snake Hill WMA there is turkeys, grouse, deer, and trout in some of the ponds. Keeney Swamp WMA and SF I kill my first deer here. there is also turkeys, grouse, snow shoes, and duck hunting and some good bass fishing. I hunted Keeney 2 years ago on Thanksgiving day with one of my sons and when we left I drove around and we were the only car there. -

I shoot a 444 marlin that being said. I would keep it to 1 of the calibers 30-30, 44mag and a 45-70, I picked thee three mostly for ammo availability. But you can’t go wrong with a 30-30. the 30-30 has killed more deer than any other round. 44my is good out to 100yds and there is a lot to be said for the 45-70 a big slow bullet with a lot of mass.

what ever works

Dinsdale your right my 22-250 has a 1in 14 twist rate. It won’t stabilize a bullet much heavier than 60gr’s. Shawnhu’s 223 if it’s a bolt gun in all probability has a 1 in 12 twist rate and would have the same problem with stability of longer bullets. That’s because both rounds are classified as varmint rounds not deer rounds.

I keep it simple I just take all of November off

Shawnhu I’m going to take the high road here and not trade insults with you. But if you want to go down that road I’m more than ready. You ask if I knew the difference between external and terminal ballistics and I answered your question. So I asked you a question and instead of answering it you started with the insults. Will try this one more time and I’ll give you more info. Why could I not use a bullet heavier than 60gr’s in my Remington 700 VS in 22-250. It’s ok not to know but you should seeing you’re using a 223 for deer.

I sure do been reloading before you were born I know the muzzle velocity and 100yd velocity of everything I shoot including my bow out to 40yds. When I say I know the velocity that’s the exact velocity not what’s on the box. Until you have shot into different media and see what happens to the bullet see a wound channel both the temporary and permanent channels. Ballistic jell is the best because you can see both wound channels. Clay only shows the temporary cavity unless it long enough to stop the bullet. Duct seal will stop most bullets it won’t stop BRI slugs or Remington copper solids they blows though my 75lb block. I don’t have a 223 but I have a 22-250 and at 50yds the wound cavity dia. Is about 2 3/8 in. and would not go through a 50lb block 60gr bullet going 3540fps the 12gr foster slugs cavity was almost 5in. and went through the 50lb block at 100 it was over 4in dia and still went through . the 60gr .224 had a 1 5/8 in. dia. Cavity and did not go through the block. I know a lot more about terminal ballistics then you are ever going to know. Here is one more thing do you know why I used a 60gr bullet in my testing. I want know your answer.

Shawnhu you need to learn something about ballistics and how things work. First most deer killed in NY are killed at less than 100yrds with a gun. Next there is more to killing a deer then how fast and how many energy foot pounds the bullet has. There is mass, momentum, diameter and bullet design and construction that has to be a counted for. A 12ga full bore slug weighs 437.5grs a 22cal bullet weighs 60gr the 12ga weighs over 7 times more than the 22cal bullet. The slug has three times the dia. As the .224 bullet and is made of soft lead and will expand at lower velocity and hold together you can only make the jacket on a.224 bullet so thick before it will starts to act like a fmj. Then there’s the momentum the slug has over ten times the momentum then the 22cal bullet. The shear mass of the 12ga slug makes it much better than a .224 bullet and when you add rifled barrel and a sabot it can make the 12ga better out to 200yds. That’s not saying a 223 won’t kill deer but if I had to choose between the 2 I would go with the 12ga every time.

I have killed deer with a 22-250 out to 200yds. Those deer were killed on a nuisance permit and all head shots. I used the 22-250 instead of my 444 or 308 because I did not want 100% pass though or having rounds bounce off the ground. I also didn’t lose a deer but I had a good rest and I know how to shoot. I waited for the perfect shot or I didn’t shoot. That being said I chose that gun for a specific job. There are too many better calibers out there to deer hunt with then to use a 223 or a 22-250. They will both kill deer but you have little room for error. To the guy who said you have to damage the nerves system that’s not what kills deer it’s getting blood pressure to “0”. Whether that’s by cutting off signals from the brain or massive organ damage the goal is the same get the blood pressure to 0.

15 years ago today I was replacing a shaft in a piece of equipment at Kodak. When someone came in and said a plane hit one of the towers. Thinking it was a terrible accident went back to work. Then the guy came in and said the other tower was hit by another plane. Then we knew what was going on.
