  1. I hardly characterize these as accidents; they are CARELESS people injuring and killing others. I have NEVER seen anything in the woods that looks remotely like a deer other than a deer. If one is not 100% SURE of their intended target, back stop and surroundings don't shoot !!!! I wish the best for the families involved.....
  2. While hunting alone in deep in the woods of the Adirondacks it was snowing wet snow and freezing drizzle. I took shelter under a spruce tree that was only about 10 feet tall but pretty dense. I was tucked nicely under the tree for about 1/2 hours when all hell broke loose above me. Unbenounced to me there had been an partridge hidden among the branches and it sat there until it became unnerved and fled. I about soiled myself as there were branches and snow flying about and the noise of the wings beating off of the branches coupled with the wind....there was some racket above my head as I attempted to flee myself. It was a few seconds until I composed myself enough to rationalize it was only a bird.....
  3. Just got out from the deep woods....tough conditions all around with snow and high winds all week long... Rain expected and headed back for the finale this week in the Northern zone.... I still have this guy running around up there..
  4. Guys, Thank you both so much; I am learning along with my 10 year old the art of trapping. We were in the "deep woods" consisting of open hardwoods and mixed swamp areas. We set traps along the edge/border of an old cut field and wood roads in the hardwoods. The deep snow really hampered our activities as it was deep and wet. Thanks again and stay safe... Dan
  5. Last weekend I experienced the greatest joy a parent can have; a deep appreciation for your child and time together afield. I have a 10 year old stepson that has some struggles at time. He is a good boy and works daily to overcome his disability. Last weekend he and I entered the trapping world together. We were at our camp and put out our coyote sets together. The greatest joy was watching him all dressed in his camo rubber boots, red and black plaid jacket and orange knit hat. He had a smile bigger than life and was filled with anticipation and endless questions. After watching and helping me set about a dozen he politely asked if he could make a set by himself if I set the trap for him. I watched as he dug, put in an anchor, baited and covered the trap. It was a pure joy to see him actively working hard to be so careful and cautious with his own scent. Unfortunately overnight we had that lake effect blizzard and all our traps became deeply buried. He was mildly disappointed but in great spirits and definitely looking forward to more trapping. Happy and Safe Holidays !!!

    Snow Sets

Maybe I could get a little guidance on this topic. Over the weekend we experienced a winter storm at my area and had over a foot of snow in about 8 hours. The snow was wet and then was followed by below freezing temperatures. My question is how can I make productive ground sets for coyote when the weather is changing so drastically and deal with the heavy snow? I greatly appreciate any help from you guys. Happy Thanksgiving to all !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. 5H - between 18-20 inches depending on the terrain. Very windy and temps dropping drastically overnight.
  8. I am East of there and I'd pack my showshoes if I were you....
  9. Found this guy sneaking through the area...
  10. Bullets will be deflected by any brush they encounter....Well said above...
  11. When I feel that the wind may break off trees and branches that will come crashing down upon me......I try to hunt hemlock swamps on these days as I believe deer can't hear as well on calm days and don't move as much.
  12. "Stop and frisk is when police temporarily detain somebody and pat down their outer clothing when there are specific articulable facts leading a reasonable police officer to believe a person is armed and dangerous. ... A "frisk" by definition is a type of search that requires a lawful stop." The underlying reason for the stop and frisk to be constitutionally legal is that there must be ARTICULABLE FACT, NOT simply because one looks suspicious or local of the individual at the given time.... Example - noticeable bulge in waistband that the person covers or cradles with his hand about the size and general shape of a handgun....this would be grounds for a fully legal stop and frisk.... 13. Look at the long range forecast.....................SNOW !! The great equalizer of the North.....
  14. Its always fun to find signs and speculate what has been there before you. Luckily, trail cameras have made the game even more enjoyable. At camp a few years back on Northern zone closing weekend it was bitter cold and we had about 8 inches of snow that Sunday night. I went to pack and leave Monday morning, opened my front door and within 20 feet of my door was a scrape made that night with fresh bark on top of the snow. I still wonder why so close and just how big of a deer was it ?
  15. If we drain the forum swamp will the bridge dwelling trolls disappear?
  16. My best advice is to dress in layers and get the outer layer oversize enough to fit over fleece and not too large that it will hamper bow draw or shouldering of a rifle. I start with a wick type material right next to my skin and layer from there with a breathable rain coat on the exterior. On my feet I wear a inner sock of the same material (like nylons) and smart wool socks with breathable boots My feet sweat and so I change out my sock mid-day if I wear rubber waders or boots. It is a long day if you are cold and wet. I carry a pack with extra gear and hunt the Adirondack backwoods so the weather changes dramatically through the day. When all else fails I use the disposable heat packs in a wool hat or in gloves along the back of my hand were the blood flows to keep the fingers warm and nimble. Good luck and welcome to New York.....
  17. Bears are very nomadic and seasonal due to changes in their food availability. I have an abandoned orchard near my hunting area and in late summer and early fall the place is very active with bears. So much so I have at least 7-8 adult bears on trail cams working the area. Once the apples are dropped or become brown the bears are no where near that area. It is amazing to track the trail cam action and it seems that once they are done, they are all done almost overnight and move on.
  18. Just got back from up in the North. It was crazy windy and very warm, unseasonably warm!! I didn't see much activity and the lack of snow hampers my style. I hope to get back up there this weekend and stay until after Thanksgiving; my wife has made it a tradition to cook a turkey and ALL the fixings at camp for the last few years. Nothing better than opening that camp door to smell the turkey and sit by the wood stove after with a full belly... Best of luck guys !!!
  19. Look on the bright side, you gained lots of exercise and found your camera....
  20. After reading some of the narrow, and uninformed views of others I am not sure how Americans will sleep tonight knowing that these views are out there of Trump. Seems that the ones who scream racist and call others deplorable live in glass houses. It was an election and while I grasp the severity and totality of the issues at hand how, can we be possibly worse off than if Hillary won... Rest easy America will be a country we can ALL be proud of again.......We have changed direction as we often have in history. Change is always good, especially if we grow and learn from within that change. I am confident that Trump will not be a "one man band" and will knowing surround himself with a knowledgeable staff with sound judgement and reason. If not we, Americans, can throw him out of the White House in four years.
