  1. Some recent pictures that I retrieved this past weekend.
  2. Very nice John, that looks like one hell of a cabin. I'm sure you and your family will have many fond memories there. Enjoy.
  3. Your local Agway, pretty quick and they provide a detailed report. They even faxed the report to me.
  4. Very nice and clean job, growing in nicely. If thats clover be sure to mow when it gets 6-8" tall, helps to ward off competing grasses. Best of luck.
  5. Welcome aboard, I hunt in Delaware/Otsego counties. Enjoy this site.
  6. I have kept a journal for last three years when I bought my land, which includes deer taken, dates and time of harvest , weight of deer, sex of deer, for bucks the # of points etc.... I also keep a food plot journal, from dates of plowing, disking, harrowing, dates of seeding, amounts and types of lime / fertilizer used, what type of crop planted and how well or bad the crop did.
  7. I commend you Frank, yes we need to do more to help our fellow hunters that are handicapped. Also its nice to get kids with disabilities involved with the outdoors, get them in the field even if its not for hunting.
  8. Leupold for me as well have one on my 300mag and that scope just sucks in the light, however I also have a Bausch and Lomb (sp ?) which is on my 30-06 and that is a great scope as well and I have a Nikon on my 22 hornet which is crystal clear. If I had to buy another scope it would have to be Leupold.
  9. Very nice John, your definately moving in the right direction. I'll try calling you tomm. Best of luck.
  10. I have 8 stands in total on 41 acres, some are bow or rifle stands, others are only for morning or evening hunts.
  11. Hey John, I have seen that video a while back. Seems impressive, but I dont have any experience with that product, but seems thats about one of a few options at this point. You would want to turn your ground, disk it then get the seedbed as flat as possible, then add your lime and fertilizer and then you can harrow the fertilizer and lime into the ground. The key is to get the lime and fertilizer to go down into your seedbed only a couple inches so they can be properly utilized by your plants. You can make your own harrow and save yourself alot of money by getting a hold of an old piece (approx.4'wide X 8' long) chain link fence that is weighted down with some heavy lumber. I have some old huge heavy floor joists screwed into a chain link fence that I can drag behind my quad or tractor. If you want shoot me a PM with your number and I can explain. Are there any farmers nearby that you can pay to prep the plot for you, lots of people take that route.I helped one other guy by answering questions, however the major work like turning the ground, disking, adding lime was done by a farmer.
  12. Heres one I have. Will have to take pictures of some of my others when I go up again. I have several double laderstands, homemade and a tripod.
  13. Yes clover can be planted in spring or Fall, however I never planted a fall clover plot. I would think if you planted in the fall, you will see the best results of that clover plot next spring and thereafter.
  14. Not always the case, I have had deer dig through a foot of snow to get at the clover underneath. My clover field looked like a bomb went off, there were huge holes in the snow everywhere. If at all possible its a good idea to have a clover plot and a late fall (brassica ) plot.My intentions are to create a healthier deer herd and I'm not overly concerned at my surrounding areas. I'm surrounded by farms and Ag, I dont let that dictate what I grow. Lately there has been standing corn well into the gun season in nearby farms and if I let what I gow get dictated by whats around me then I would have no need to grow anything.
  15. Iam more prone to believe there are cycles in small game populations. If it were true with coyotes and hawks being the cause of low small game populations then my area would be void of small game as we have high populations of coyote, fox and hawks and contrary the rabbits and grouse populations in my area continue to rise.
  16. I would have to say that using a walking tiller to turn a 1/4 acre is a huge undertaking, even more so if you have rocks. Rocks will destroy a tiller in no time. Unless you were talking about a tiller for a tractor, then that would work. At this point you would probably want to go with a Brassica plot. Get the plot tilled, add lime and fertilizer by mid to end of July and then plant your seed in the 1st week of August.Good luck.
  17. I think with the ever rising prices of property and tax hikes, farmers and owners alike may look for hunting clubs or few people to pay to hunt to help subsidize their farming and or pay taxes. Years ago by me you could go anywhere and get permission, now everything is about the money and I think rightfully so. Its not cheap to buy, maintain and pay taxes on NY property. I felt the same way as you that is until I became an owner. Even though I hunt mostly on my property, I still have a couple parcels that I can hunt for nothing based upon relationships that I or my father have fostered over the years. You have to keep at it and keep asking and you never know. Dont give up.
