  1. That is cool, it will be a nice place to visit.
  2. Thanks WNY that really helps. G-man I'll heed the warning!
  3. Karp, what part of Huntington? I used to live (before divorce) on Crescent beach dr in Huntington Bay Hills. The kids and ex are still there.
  4. I'm at camp with my two daughters, I have 10 days off!
  5. On vacation the next two weeks, thinking about bringing the kids over to the state park and exploring. Any tips out there what to do and not to do? Anything else in the area while I'm over there that would be cool for the kids? Thanks
  6. Just do it and use the meat. You can give yourself a rule not to shoot any doe during regular season to make you feel a bit better.
  7. Yea, the deer is the bonus. I have also grown into a different hunter and enjoy seeing other guests on my property bag a deer.
  8. I have a very interesting question to ask. I was going to respond to WNY on another thread about letting the public hunt my private property. I was thinking deer hunting, no way don't trust anyone except friends. I stopped writing and thought, hell I let two kids rabbit hunt last year and didn't know them from a hole in the wall. What is the difference between small game and big game? Weapons, safety, I don't do much small game so who cares? Is it the prize, the game, the bragging rights we are after shooting that big buck? The sacred deer on my property that are mine? Well who really owns them, they were on my neighbors property this morning, he owned them for a bit now they are down the road on Joe's property, new owner. Is it the population of deer that do it, grouse are not that plentiful but I let people hunt them, no problem. Does the whitetail deer have a spell over us that makes us so selfish? Your thoughts? BTW-my lands posted, don't ask to hunt.lol
  9. I think I might like to tag along if I can fit it into my schedule.
  10. Wow that is small for that time of year, 10lbs of the best veal! I'm sure it was good.
  11. I know what your thinking, get your mind out of the gutter. Seriously, we all have eaten yearlings, how about a fawn you have hit with the car and the meat is still good? Probably not much meat but I'm sure there is some backstrap in there. Not that I will be cruising for fawn this weekend, just asking. How good was it??
  12. Oct 1st is great, youth hunt wonderful and early smokepole a treat!
  13. Nice birthday present! It's nice to catch a break here and there.
  14. Great, now I have to look up in the air when I make it through the woods, like bears aren't enough!!!
  15. I was picked on a survey last year. it had to do with forestry and game habitat. Filled out the survey, got a thank you and an invite to a workshop they were putting together. I believe the criteria was Southern tier landowners over 50 acres.
  16. Enjoy the Day, looks to be real nice. Happy first Fathers day John!
  17. Just saw the story, unreal they can fly with that fawn in its grip.
  18. Im at a loss for what you are trying to say here. "unless you hunt in a high pressure area...." what? Why is a picture taken in June, how many stands you have or how many times you hunt them in a season relevant to anything we are discussing here? Dont take this as me being a jerk, Im trying to figure out what you are saying. I think Grow was pointing out that at early season it's very green and hard to see other hunters. Mandatory orange would help. Maybe I'm wrong but I think that's it.
  19. G-man, Don't know much about mudfest but on Memorial day weekend in Avoca they had something like this. I stopped in with my girls and we had a blast. Trucks are awesome!
  20. The youth season will be great. Why not do it??? We will have almost three months to hunt deer, we can't spare 3 days, sound selfish to me. As being a solution to getting kids involved in the sport it is not. You have to have them out there all year. Teach them the ways of the outdoors, not just about a three day hunt. Involve them in food plots, getting the camp in working order, other game on the property and forestry. Mix all these things together and let it grow inside that impressionable youngster and you just might end up with a hunter. I just penned in the date for my mentoring duties this year. He will also be staining the cabin and plating trees in the fall with me. Might even get in some fly fishing also!
  21. I have read most of the posts here and there are some valid points. For me a hunter that travels a good distance to deer camp the only season I would be able to take advantage of would be the youth hunt. I would not be able to come up during the week so that weekend would be great for me to get my girls out to hunt. The early muzzleloader in my opinion would not hurt anything. The woods are so green that time of year I would think you would be hunting field edges, at least I would. The weather is warmer so those old coots that can't take the cold get a shot at using a bow or muzzleloader early season. I see that youth weekend as more than a hunting opportunity, the woods are just alive with color, the weather is usually real nice, hunt in the morning and evening and fly fish mid-day! What a better way to enjoy the outdoors with our kids!
