  1. lot of woodlands near my house and i have seen turkeys come threw the yards but i hunted in there a lot this past fall and never saw a turkey or tracks for them, but got out of my truck after work one day and heard one yelping only a couple hundred yards into the woods. they are there but very hard to track down and i think they tend to stick around certain areas.
  2. Funny you post this up, i bought a mission venture about 3 months ago and my cousin bought the assasin. i love my mission and am extremely happy i went with it, his assasin is a little faster than mine is but mine is a quieter shooter. roller gaurd vs. slide rod just seems like bowtech cheaped out there. Mission is lifetime warranty and there very forgiving dependng on who your pro shop is mathews will cover a lot of stuff that they probly shouldn't bowtech wont. He loves his were both at 60lbs my draw is 26 his is 28 or 29 i cant remember but that alone is going to make his a little faster. mine i feel is more forgiving though as he's missed a number of targets shooting anywhere from 20-60 yards. i've shot my bow 3 or 4 times as much as he has and ive only missed a target once. i know that doesnt say a lot but this is my first real new bow and i got a lot better in a hurry when i got mine. big change from shooting an early 90s PSE. he bought his for 650 with the quiver rest and site already on it. he got some arrows and such and ended up near 800 for his setup fully. I went with a little cheaper bow but i went with top notch accesories. all said and done i am at $1050 for everything i have on my bow Mission Venture - $500 Mission M5 quiver - $125 Axion Edge site - $120 Axion Stabilizer - $75 Beman ISC Hunter Elite Arrows with Dual Vbrake - $70 half dozen Whisker Biscuit Kill Shot - $40 tax, peep, kisser, etc etc - Total $1047 Ordered mine with custom black riser and camo limbs, camo sight and stabilizer and quiver. unique and looks badass. His is the all black assasin. i like the style of the assasin but i couldn't be happier with my Venture. i'll be keeping it for many years to come.
  3. sorry.. posts come in to fast to read everything. turkey hunting thread i figured he was talking about turkey hunting.
  4. you can only legally hunt in NY from a half hour before sunrise to noon, hunting in afternoon is illegal, just an FYI.
  5. i was also using remington 3 inch turkey loads with number 5 shot, seemed to be very effective in the fall but they are cheaper rounds. i think im going to try some hevi shots as i hear the groupings are a bit better but they are expensive.
  6. yeah im same way she's not super into hunting at all right now but im gettin to her haha, i think if i can call one in and get her a nice bird she'll fall in love with it and want to do it much more just as i did. right now im using just a full choke, i tagged my hen at about 25-30 yards and put it down easy with the full choke, i think i may switch to an x-full for myself as i may stretch out a bit farther for my next one but for my fiance im going to leave the full in and hopefully get her closer to one as she's not that great of a shot with a gun anyhow. i'll be taking my bow out when she has the 870 so if she gets one i can start to work on getting one with a bow myself, i'm more for hunting with a bow for the challenge than i ever will be with a gun. first time out i may just leave the bow home and see if she can get one first.
  7. If your picking pellets out of meat your not aiming for the right area. I've heard a lot of great things about the hevi shot im going to be trying them out this spring
  8. I cannot wait either, already put a camo wrap on my 870 20 gauge and have some sights coming this week for it, then adding a sling and ill be ready, gonna put the shotgun in my girlfriends hands for her first year of hunting and see if i can call her in one. even though its my first year of hunting also i got a hen in the fall but id much rather see her get one and get into it like i am. 30 years old never hunted till this year no idea why i fell in love with it my first time out. isn't it illegal to have food plots for anything in ny? just happen to see a post above about it.
  9. Good to know thanks for clarifying. I agree with ya Doc, i think it puts visions in our minds that we may see deer of those calibers while out hunting and as most of you already know thats just not going to happen. with real hunting if you get a huge buck thats even close to something like those pix its a once and a lifetime opportunity usually. not saying people cant get huge deer more than once but its a rare thing to get depending on where you hunt.
  10. thats one dumb kid thats all i can say. bred and raised bucks re not trophys no matter how big the rack is. in my opinion if that deer was the honest world record deer its really no record at all being a raised deer. i would hope the boone n crocket scoring reflects for raised deer otherwise its just stupid. deer are wild when there raised and fed special food n so on of course they may reach world record class. a true wild deer is the only thing you can shoot and consider it a trophy. i dont know to many guys that mount the heads of cows they kill thats all killing raised deer is to me.
  11. i enjoy huntin in general but i can't agree with ya because being in the woods many days throughout the entire gun season and not seeing a single deer it starts to get very discouraging after a while. i wouldnt mind at all if i cant get a shot at something but not seeing a thing except squirrels just sucks.
  12. thats like nothing i have ever seen before, id almost be afraid of coming across that in the woods lol
  13. nice, i missed out on a huge gobbler due to some rookie error on my part but its my first year huntin and i got a turkey in general so im not complainin, fall turkey is much different than spring. personally i cant wait for spring, got my calls, blind and decoys ready to go. good weather hunting will be great
  14. havent seen a deer all gun season so far, taking this weekend off but going to get out one last time for the following weekend with bow or muzzloader
  15. i use an 870 20 gauge, anything bigger is unnecessary to carry. 20 does same thing a 12 will do. i use my 20 for turkey and clay shooting, a bit lighter and easier to carry in the woods for sure. either can shoot up to 40-50 yards with an xtra full choke. got a turkey this year at over 30 while it was moving
