  1. Anyone seen any greys out in the woods in Saratoga County? Im looking at Middle Grove and Daketown as new spots. Albany Pine Bush, Ushers Road and Parcell 45 (next to Wilton Mall) all seem to be Reds at this point. I may try Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Capital District MWA in the next few weeks also. I was talking to an old timer in the woods the other day and he told me to hang a bird feeder out there if I really wanted to fill my limit. While the idea seemed over the top to me, it appears via the DEC website that offering the weary late season squirrels some black oil sunflower or the like in a handful on log isnt illegal per their exclusion on the list.
  2. Anyone have any success calling them in?
  3. I may have to revisit my stance then and give them a try.
  4. I'm with you on this. They stink like turpentine and are rumored to taste like they are marinated in it also.
  5. Out on the east side of the state mid day Ive been having alot of success with Red's with the stalk/stop method. All in the pines of course...
  6. Just remember without a nuisance wildlife control license it is illegal to transport live animals to relocate. A private citizen MUST terminate the animal or hire someone with a license to relocate it. From what a ECO told me, you can be fined a substantial amount if caught. http://nwco.net/03-LegalIssues/3-2-4-WhatsLeft.asp I took care of over 250 chipmunks in my yard this past summer from Memorial day through the end of October.
  7. It is also illegal to transport them without a nuisance wildlife control license.
  8. Unprotected in NY state, no limit, no restrictions
  9. I actually see quite alot of squirrels when Im out in the the woods, but all Im seeing is all red squirrels in my area, and not one grey. I find it hard to believe that tactics of either sitting still for some time or trying to flush them will only produce reds. I guess what Im looking for from someone in my area to confirm this trend of greys to mostly suburban areas due to most of the public hunting areas close to large populations of humans.
  10. This may seem like a silly question, but where are all the greys out in the woods? I can have 15 the size of house cats crawling in my lawn, vehicles and other personal property but when I go out in the field the only thing I can find are sketchy little reds. I swear they have strictly migrated into the suburbs, and I suppose who can blame them. For being out on the hunt, Ive mostly been over to the state land on Ushers Road, Wilton Parcell 45 and been looking to scout Black Creek Marsh, Capital District WMA in Rensselaer county and last but not least the heavily regulated Pine Bush reserve for more opportunities. Any other small game hunters in the area have any suggestions? If I could only convince the foks in the neighborhood to let me snipe with an air gun in and around the neighborhood, I could probably take a limit everyday till the end of the season and I doubt it would put a dent in the population...
