  1. no it's not illegal... it's illegal to hunt deer with dogs not track them for recovery Long Island they use Dauschounds because they are blood trackers not scent trackers
  2. a slight quartering away shot as you describe follwed by 3 pie plate pools of blood? that deer is DEAD no question about it i understand you attempted to recover it for 3-4 hrs however rather than returning to your stand you should have continued to search sorry if telling it like it is hurts but its the truth, you didnt exhaust every effort if you were back in your stand at 1:00pm even walking around blindly until dark would have given you a chance at finding it, sh*t ya may have tripped over it not gonna happen when your back in your stand, insert whatever medical terminology you like that deer is DEAD was probably dead before your feet touched the ground and you owed it to the deer to search till dark (at least till dark) some how i imagine if it was a 14pt deer you would still be searchin the woods rather than posting on here, we all loose deer sometimes i tracked a deer over 3 miles once hands and knees finding a pin head drop every 20ft did i find it? no i didnt but i truly exhausted every effort i wasn't sitting in my stand 4hrs later when i had another 6hrs of daylight
  3. try hanging marking tape where you find blood, much easier to see a general direction that way, if ya loose blood it's easier to pick the blood back up if you can clearly see the direction
  4. good luck finding her don't give up... seems i have read more posts about not finding deer today then those finding them
  5. is there still a massive drought up there? i know our pond had 19ft of water in April and only 2ft in July
  6. Nice shots, some however should be practicing a bit more, there shouldn't be a 12" group at 25yrds
  7. tinks used it for 10+ years and never once have a I seen a deer even acknowledge it, never once... stopped using it all together
  8. just go into a 7-11 buy a big cup of ice and a 2 liter bottle of coke
  9. chiggers do not go under your skin thats a myth... Chigger mites infest human skin via areas of contact with vegetation, such as pant cuffs or shirt sleeves and collars. They migrate on the skin in search of an optimal feeding area. A common myth about chiggers is that they burrow into and remain inside the skin. This is not true. Chiggers insert their feeding structures into the skin and inject enzymes that cause destruction of host tissue. Hardening of the surrounding skin results in the formation of a feeding tube called a stylostome. Chigger larvae then feed upon the destroyed tissue. If they are not disturbed (which is rarely the case because of they cause substantial itching) they may feed through the stylostome for a few days.
  10. good part is plywood season is open year round in NY
  11. NFA ADK, you bowhunt the adirondacks as well?
  12. depends if you shoot a deer on LI (rocky point or otis pike) and want another doe permit you have to bring in the head
  13. if you have to post the same picture twice of the same deer it's a bad sign
  14. Sounds good blackradio, if your shooting a 28" DL & 29" arrow & 64-65lb your best bet is to go with the 7595 with a 100gr head, a 125 gr head just lessens the stiffness of your spine. 29" arrow 64lbs and 100 gr head you should tune perfect
  15. good idea to go with the 7795 & 125 grain head as other have said be mindful of your draw weight, cold, clothes and early in the morning makes for weak muscles. I always shot a 70# bow hell i used to mess around on the target with my buddys 80 pound bow (mind you i'm 155lbs), however one chilly october morning i went to draw back on a doe, guess what? i struggled to pull it back now i shoot 63# and it's comfortable all day long
  16. 28" draw 64 pounds and under go with Goldtip 5575 28" draw 65 pounds and higher go with Goldtip 7595
  17. biggest thing is spray/treat your clothes with Permathin (Sawyers is the one i use) follow the instructions on the bottle, i treat my pants, jacket, long sleeve shirt and boots and it all goes into one of the BIG ziplock clothing storage bags, I take the clothes out and get dressed, hunt and upon returning undressed and back in the bag before i drive home, other thing i find really helps is my pants go over my boots and then i put 1-2 wraps of duct tape to seal it, knock on wood as far as i know I didnt have any ticks last year, I get far more ticks on me just fishing on the south shore
  18. Best seems to be from Halloween till veterans day Nov. 11th
  19. Rocky Point, Otis Pike, David Sarnoff and a few other lands if your a suffolk county resident
  20. Nice Crappyice, i think i will remain hunting the large tracks of land here on the island. we have 2 areas that are 5,000 acres and 4,000 acres, no thick crowds neither
  21. Elites are sweeeet, i've heard the Elite Judge is a bit harsh on the draw but the Elite Hunter would be my #1 choice but even the used ones were out of my $$ range last year
  22. gotcha, thank you looks like the downfall is the small acreage as 326 acres being the largest, thanks for the info but i think i'll focus on Suffolk County Big Peninsula** 326 Louden Point** 180 Muscoot East*** 160 New Croton**** 210 Stayback Hill**** 142 Turkey Mountain East** 95 Turkey Mountain West** 185
  23. when westchester started alowing hunting on public land i think you needed to take a proficiency test (accuracy test)
  24. did you need to take a proficiency test as well? open to non-westchester residents?
