coming back form Summit, NY this past weekend, drove past a field buried in 18" of snow, there were approx 80 birds in that field including 20 Toms, every Tom was flarred up and strutting

That does make a good point, the deer have been stressed out since opening day of bow season and do deserve a rest fro human pressure and have earned the right to rest during the critical winter season, and although many areas do allow hiking most hikers stick to the trails and dont venture thru bedding areas like shed hunters. Giving it more thought then I have in the past it does really make sense to give the deer a break.

So... ive been told that shed hunting on NY state land is illegal since you are not allowed to remove anything from the state property... true?

Most hunter do not target bear because it runs the same time a deer reg. season, those who do take a bear seem to do it as an given opportunity while deer hunting

Rock Point #2 is next to a giant field the bucks are beginning to shed, I know someone who found a nice fresh droptine shed last weekend

you will most likely have the morning to yourselves, that is an area where someone comes by in a truck or van and drops off his buddies to push east from there

I imagine when you see the tv shows where they show a host a pic of a buck and say "he has been around at such and such time" is filmed in reverse. The host shoots the deer and they they go thru cam pics and discuss that deer is the one they are after.

Wow truly a gorgeous buck deer passion, don't get me wrong private property upstate I hunt my FIL has a cam or two, we saw a giant 9pt 3 days before opening day that I didn't think existed there and nobody has seen him since, also had a 200#+ bear, same deal spotted once or twice I personally don't spend enough time up there or hunting just one location on the island to justify a cam that has to be locked down to discourage thieves. Once again gorgeous deer, congrats

To be honest... If I'm not in my stand I don't care what passed by at 2am. As much as I care what another deer was doing in the next state over I don't need a pick to know a monster is around if I see a tree that's 5" across shredded I know it's a big buck, I like surprises

Besides on state land you have so many uncontrollable factors that change deer movement its not worth it, if I scout an area and see 4 large trees rubbed out and 10 scrapes I don't need a cam to know there is a big buck around

I understand the purpose of cams however on state land on long island it is not permitted, by state park rules. obviously no excuse to steal or damage it

Deer season is still on here Bow till Dec. 31 and Shotgun till Jan 31st

I will be out east Sat. Sun. Mon. and maybe Tuesday as well, then the Mon & Tues before the bow season ends, followed by one last shot on Jan 10th for shotgun. then i pack it up and wait for Turkey
