Another vote for the discharge bag. I bring my bow 1/2 way to my spot in a case. I leave the discharge bag in a tree. Put the bow together and take it apart in the same spot.

Well it’s funny you mention hight because I’m shooting uphill from a blind. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I have to shoot uphill at this spot because town is below. Not as critical with a bow but more so with the gun. I’ve been hunting this spot on and off since ‘06 and shot several bucks at this location. I don’t like trees but I’ve thought of an elevated platform many times. When I say the deer were hit a bit high and a bit low I mean in both cases just a bit. Especially the one this year. I hit him dang near perfect. I don’t have the experience with archery gear to figure this out on my own. If these were gun deer they would have been bang flops.

I have harvested two bucks with the Xbow so far. First was 2016 and second was this year 2019. Same equipment. Ten Point Titan bow, Wicked Ridge older arrows the orange and black ones and Rage 100 grain two blade mechanical broad heads. The 2016 buck was a young six pointer, shot was 50 yards. Hit was a little high, not much. Deer mule kicked and ran off fast. No blood at the shot site and no blood trail. Found the deer about 100 yards away. Again no blood. Hard to find because of no blood and because I misjudged what direction he ran. Cut the deer open and the blood poured out. The 2019 deer was a mature 10 pointer, shot was 20 yards. Hit was a little low, not much. Deer mule kicked and ran off fast. No blood at the shot site and no blood trail. Deer ran 50 yards and just stood there not moving. After about 20 minutes it took a few steps and laid down. I waited 45 minutes and left the blind and started walking to the deer. Big mistake deer ran off. I retreated to the blind. This time I waited 3 hours and waited for reinforcements. Found the deer fifty yards away still alive. Nephew had his bow and was close so he shot it in the lungs. Deer got up and charged down hill. Scary to watch so close. Deer ran thirty yards and went down. Probably not necessary but I shot it again. Bad idea only made a mess of the guts. Both deer no blood. Broadheads made a small holes going in but huge holes exiting. Is this just the way these heads work?? I have no other archery experience. I always thought there would be huge blood trails. Don’t have confidence in these heads. Thanks in advance for the help. Mike.

I looked thru the specs on the Ten Point bows and they don’t look like they comply with NYS laws but I might be reading it wrong. Please point out the models that do comply.

I have been using my Cabelas card for large purchases and racking up points. I figured at the rate I’m going I’ll get a $2,500 Xbow for free in five years but by then the expensive ones will be 5k. But by the time the law is changed I’ll be dead and have 20K available in Cabelas points. Gotta love this state.

Yes I’m aware of the Wicked Ridge Line and agree that they will kill a deer. But we still should be able in NYS to hunt with the best technology not last years model. We all know you don’t need a 300 Win mag to kill a deer and that a 243 will do the job but each year many hunters go out over gunned because that’s what they want to do. And if that means buying a $2,500 dollar Xbow then good for them. And every American should do what he/ she wants to do. We have a small group of people forcing their idea of hunting on to the rest of us and that’s just un-American.
-
Ten point doesn’t even make a NYS legal Xbow. Excaliber only makes one legal model. Not saying I would drop $2,500 on a new Xbow but I wish it was my choice not NYS choice.

I have been dealing with crazy, criminal, drunk, poachers high on drugs for 46 years. An entire family of them. I have spoken about them on this and other sites before. Short story is they threatened us and we had one of them put in prison for a long stretch. They are not supposed to be carrying firearms but they do. We even bought land on the next mountain to get away from them and last year they fired a shot in my brothers direction across a highway on our new land. If you go down the road of involving the police it will never end. And you will be in fear of them permanently. Not telling you what to do just explaining to you what will happen. We don’t hunt the land adjacent to theirs alone anymore. We are always strapped with long guns, handguns and belt knives.

Not that I’m spending $2,400 on a new bow.

Full inclusion would be good but I would rather have the 200lb draw weight and 17” limb tip to tip restrictions removed.

I shoot the 28 for registered skeet and do not see much difference than the 20. I snowbird in Florida now and have gone quail shooting at a plantation three times. First time I used a 12 autoloader. Major over kill. Second time I used a 20 O/U. No issues. Third time I used a 28 O/U and my son used the 20. I saw no difference at all except the price of the ammo. The quail did not complain. I think all this 28 love is overrated.

This is my third year with the Xbow. I have a Ten Point Titan. The scope has points for 20,30,40 and 50. I practiced at all four ranges and was very comfortable up to 50 yards. In ‘16 a 6pt showed up at 50 yards at a slow trot. I was in a tent and had a good rest. Used the 50 yard pin and double lunged him when he stopped. He went 100 yards or so. My first and only bow kill. I don’t see a problem as long as your equipment is good, sighted In properly, and your confident of your ability. Every other deer I have seen with the xbow either I did not want or he thought it was gun season and stayed out too far.

Wild thread but I will add my 2 cents. I live on Long Island where shotguns are required. I hunt with a large gang of hunters doing drives. I have seen every shotgun and slug combo possible. You don’t need 3” slugs. They don’t kill and better that 2 3/4”. They also shoot to a much different POI that standard slugs. When shooting a shotgun with a bead it’s the luck of the draw if it will shoot to Point of aim. Remember shotguns are regulated to shoot shot not slugs. You might have to try many brands until you find one that shoots to point of aim or not. That’s why sights and scopes are used to dial shotguns in just like a rifle. I hunt the big woods of the Catskills. Not as big as the ADK but still large. I don’t hunt on farms or small plots. I hunted with a 742 for over twenty years before the rails wore out inside the receiver. Remington had a trade in program and I got a 7400. The most unlucky gun in the world. I went nine years without a buck, ‘96 to 2004. Heard about the Benoit’s read all their books and started buying 7600’s. 35 Rem, 35 Whelen, 25-06, 7mm-08, 257 Roberts. Sold the 25-06 and 7mm-08. I also bought a 750 in Whelen. My luck changed. I have shot some good bucks mostly with the 35 Rem. Those rifles carry well and swing well. I tracked my first buck the Benoit way with the 750 a few years ago. Basket 8pt. My opinion, never limit yourself to a single shot gun except a ML, never choose a shotgun over a rifle and never choose a gun without sights unless it’s an emergency.

I emailed the DEC a few months ago. I asked about the archaic xbow rules. Someone got right back to me and told me the restrictions were voted on in the state legislature with the entire Xbox package including season dates. I asked what was the reason for the size and poundage rules and he insinuated that it was to equalize xbow to compound bows and appease the NYS bow hunters association.

Shot several in SC that ate good. Shot a huge boar in Florida last year that I’m having mounted that was the most vile critter I ever ate.
-
I don’t shoot does. My area upstate 4p and 4r do not have enough deer to be shooting does. When the 3 pt rule came in I shot a couple of fives and sixes. Now I only shoot eights. I hunt Orange County some times and I will shoot a small buck if I’m in the mood. On LI I shoot every deer I see or have tags for. It’s a cull hunt.

Who carries a handgun while hunting?
mike103 replied to pitweiler's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
Smart guy right here. I always carry except xbow hunting. -
I love lever actions having grown up watching cowboy movies all my life. And I have a nice little collection of 9 different ones. Some real different calibers such as 356 win. But I have never hunted with one. Never even brought one in the woods. I’m a Remington guy. Years ago it was 742’s and 7400’s. But since 2004 it’s mostly 7600’s in 35 Rem and 35 Whelen. But I do have a 750 Rem in 35 Whelen that has taken a nice 8 tracking in snow. Might get the nod again this year.

I’m a member and have been I believe for three years. I have gotten several people to sign up.

I have a Ten Point Titian “Extreme”? I believe. Shot one buck with it. But I’m going on a bear trip this spring in Canada. Hankering for an excuse to buy a better bow but I’m waiting to see if the laws change. Stick with a legal bow. Never invite the man into your life.

Which hunting weapon and season do you like the best ?
mike103 replied to Hunter007's topic in General Chit Chat
I do love spring turkey season and turkey shotguns but I agree walking in the snow with a Remington pump action rifle, of course in 35 caliber, is the best feeling in the world.
