  1. I am done preaching. Thank GOD!
  2. I have come to hate the hunting shows when all they talk about is score of the racks and the age of the deer as they pass on deer that most NY hunters will never encounter in the field. And then it’s commercial time and they advertise tractors, seed and fertilizer. I hunt in the woods. In my first 40 years a spike was a trophy. Now with the restrictions 6’s and 8’s are much more common and I have shot more good bucks since the restrictions began.

    E Bikes

    No bikes on DEP property.
  4. I wish every hunter agreed with this.
  5. In my deer camp over 45 years I have seen deer shot with just about everything from 223 to 45-70. The two with 223 one was with FMJ ammo many years ago and it was a long tracking job. The other was recent with Fed fusions and the lungs were jello. No tracking necessary. Over the years the biggest problem I saw and still see is unfamiliarity with the gun. Over the years I saw many scopes mounted and sighed in the day before the season. They service their trucks, quads and get their clothes ready but wait until the last moment to check the gun. My brother and I have started sighting in days during the summer and things have gotten better.
  6. I have two 35 Whelen’s, a 7600 pump and a 750 auto. I also have a 35 Rem 7600 carbine. I shot my best two bucks with the 35 Rem and several others. Very mild shooting cartridge. I use the standard 200 grain loads. I shot one small buck with my Whelen pump, my son shot one small buck with it and I shot a bear with it. All were close shots and the 200 grain loads were used. No great feat of marksmanship or test of ballistic performance. All one shot kills. I shot a eight three years ago with the auto using the 250 grain loads. Hit him back a bit and had a long tracking job. Like to think the bigger bullets helped a bit. Love the whelens and have had good luck with them but never really put them to the test. The 7600’s carry well in the woods.
  7. I voted for Saturday because the kids have the weekend off to hunt and the average working man is off. I missed many a opening day while I was working because I could not take Monday off. Mike.
  8. Well I own both in Remington 7600 pumps. I killed several bucks with both rifles and a bear with the Whelen. I wish I could give you a detailed account of the performance of both cartridges on game at different distances. But the truth is all shots were under 100 yards on several deer, a few yotes and one bear. The bear was shot in the head at close range when treed by hounds. So either rifle would have done the job on all shots. The 35 Rem is a carbine and it carries well. I have a 2x7 Nikon scope mounted with a O/U mount not to use the iron sights although you could but to allow your thumb to go under the scope and allow you to carry the rifle with your whole hand at the balance point. The recoil is very mild and because of the short bull barrel very accurate out to 100 yards. I use the standard Remington soft point 200 grain bullets. All six bucks killed with this gun were one shot kills. The ammo is hard to find at times and expensive. The Whelen barrel is rifle length and has a 3x9 Nikon mounted over the bore with QD Warne mounts. Carry is not as comfortable because the receiver has to be cradled in your hand. I use the Remington soft point 200 grain bullets. I don't not find the recoil excessive but it is more then the 30-06. I have shot this rifle out to 200 yards and it is very accurate. Both of the bucks shot with this gun were one shot stops as well as two yotes and of course the bear. I also own a Remington 750 auto loader carbine in 35 Whelen. This rifles took several trips to the range to find the right length for the spring to operate the rifle reliable. Had to take out about five rings on the spring. Because of this I don't shoot the gun much. I also use the 250 grain Remington soft points because they cycle the action better. I also have a 2x7 Nikon scope with the O/U mount. I have only shot this rifle at fifty yards. Like all autos the barrel heats up and the shots walk. It also has the carbine length bull barrel. Only shot one buck with the gun. Shot too far back and had to track it and finish it off. My fault. Like to think the big bullet helped out. Thats my experience.

Terrible. Saw no bucks. Very disappointing because the year before 2014-2015 we saw bucks every day and I got a eight. The year before I got a six. I have a good buck on camera right now and on a scouting mission I found were a huge one is hiding in a remote area. The same area I killed two good bucks in the past. Put the time in now and during the season and you will increase your chances. Don't over look public property. There are deer on public land and most areas are not hard hunted. I go in at dark and come home in dark. Some sitting mostly on opening weekend but all walking after that. I keep records and have killed half of my bucks on the last weekend. No one hunts after thanksgiving. The locals wait for black powder and shoot everything they see with "black powder rifles". The new poaching season. They get a ML tag for everyone they know and small bucks are killed "at their brother in laws place" outside the three point rule. My crew gets doe tags and throw them away. The doe population do not merit doe tags in my area in my opinion. If a local really needs the meat I would never criticize them. But the ones I see shooting the deer are not starving. Happy hunting and good luck!!!

Farms gone in most of the unit. Has reverted to Forrest. Deer suffered from the past bad winters and yotes. DEC says no 2 1/2 year old bucks. Makes sense from what I saw the past year. Good news is lots of public land especially DEP that almost no one hunts. Been hunting the unit for 43 years. If you get a good one you most likely earned it. Good luck!!
  11. No I'm not a ass. I am a moderator on several gun sites. You are a troll. A troll is a person who makes a post to start a fight. You went to a crossbow forum and picked a fight. If you did this on most other sites you would be warned and if you continued you would get a time out or maybe even banned. The fact that you called me a ass makes my point. You are not a nice person and you demonstrated it quite clearly in this thread. This site loses credibility by not reigning in people like you. Have a good day .
  12. This is a troll thread. The OP came into a crossbow forum trolling for a fight. On other sites this thread would be trashed. Let me check my list, compound bow, mechanical trigger release, range finder, mechanical broad heads, fiber optic sight, carbon arrows, sent loc clothing, climbing stand, sent control, doe in heat lure, bino's, gore tec, camo, tree ladder, ground blind with swivel chair, and of course electric socks. All ready for my primitive hunt.
  13. Hunted with a Remington 740 for over 20 years until it stopped. Remington had a trade in program and I got a 7400. Most unlucky gun I ever owned. Went buckless for nine years. In 2004 I got the pump bug bad. Started with a 35 Rem carbine added a 35 Whelen, my two go to guns, then went crazy with 257 Roberts, 6 mm Rem, 25-06, 7mm-08, and a 30-06 carbine for my son. The 35's are the opposite of the 7400. I have shot several good bucks with those guns. The smaller calibers have never made it to the woods and I'm thinking of selling them.
  14. The ten years were better. His brother and nephew here around but both were in rehab and jail on and off. He is a very violent person having been arrested for domestic violence, arson and burglary. He was on parole at the time. He did his full time because of his behavior in jail. It had to be done but still sucks that his is out.
  15. I own hunting land with five other friends. For over 40 years we have dealt with a epic family of poachers next to us. After 30 years of trying to live with these people we finally turned over pictures of one member of the family carrying a gun while being a convicted felon. He was sentenced to ten years in prison and did every single day of that sentence. He was let out last year. Now we live in fear of retaliation.
  16. Get rid of back tags Hunt 30 min before sunrise Bait and hounds for bear Crossbows in all areas and all of bow season Legal to carry Handgun while bow hunting Coyote hunting year round Buckshot legal during January LI shotgun season 410 slugs legal for deer statewide Earn a buck for bowhunters statewide One buck per year period One turkey during spring and fall until birds rebound
  17. Several in my group us AR's for deer. 62 grain Federal Fusions get the job done. Turns lungs in soup. Can't go far without lungs.
  18. I know you would. 1 million deer all for the bowhunters.
  19. What a surprise another bowhunter that wants more time for him and less for others! Bow hunters were against the Columbus weekend youth hunt. Bow hunters were against crossbows. Bow hunters want to go back to the Monday opener, three weekends of gun not the present four. Bowhunters want the gun season to open the week before thanksgiving so that gun hunters miss the rut. I am, and most other NY hunters are sick and tired of what bow hunters want. You know you can hunt with a bow during any season. In the southern zone that gives you all of October, November, and half of December. On Long Island you can hunt thru January. Up north you can start in September. And you want more time with the bow!!!!!!
  20. Vic's first deer. 7mm-08 Browning, one shot at 65 yards.
  21. Vic hunted with his Dad. I'm just the poster.
  22. Vic used a Browning rifle given to him by Grandpa, 7mm-08, 140 grain standard Remington ammo. Deer was shot on the edge of a field at 1pm at 65 yards. One shot, one kill. Vic has shot small game before but this is his first big game hunt.
  23. Here is "Vic" a very proud and successfull youth hunter. Deer taken yesterday in Chenango County on his uncle's private property.
