oh, I agree, that wasn't directed at any one group at all......
-
yeah, it kinda borders on being comical and embarrassing.

hunting State land is not always easy, neither is finding the time to scout it, but good land is there to be had.....and it's basically free. I spend time each year looking at new property and have never had a problem finding good stuff, spots that are good one year may not be the next and I have a few plan A, B & C's......like I've said previously, I've pretty much hunted public land exclusively for years, never had a complaint or envied a landowner.....owning land has many downfalls as well, and I'm sure those who do own can probably give you a list of them. I've known private landowners who had great hunting that over the years slowly turned to crap and they couldn't just walk away, I'm sure they could have done things to help improve it, but not everyone has the time and means to do so, not everyone lives on the land they own and aren't there 24/7 to do the things that need to be done. I know people who own 50-100 acres and year after year do worse then myself and family who hunt public land......I bet for every one landowner who dumps time and money into creating great hunting habitat, there's 10 who do nothing.

http://www.huntersfriend.com/ I wish I had thought of posting this place earlier for those getting started with new bows, I've used them in the past and they have some pretty good deals on bows as well as info on their site......pretty good when it comes to asking for help too, at least they where when I used them a while back.

I think we dump an ungodly amount of stink from our mouths, that's tough to control.......you ever talk to some hunters after they got up at 3 a.m. and hunted all day? you would think something died inside of them.........but I'm always of the thought that if it can't hurt, why not try it?
-
judging by the look on the dog's face and the look on the guy's face, neither one looks too happy with the other.....kind like that "oh God, not again" look......or maybe the "yeah I know, don't ask me who put the skyline of Manhattan painting in between my two deer heads" look.

They did a nice job on the guy on the couch too.....

Trials and tribulations of broadhead sighting.....
jjb4900 replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Bow Hunting
because he seems to be at a loss at this point? the comment about not being sure if his arrows are properly spined? at a certain point I would think spending a few bucks for help is cheaper then chasing accessories that may or may not be the problem. The pro shop I go to helps out their customers for free most of the time, could very well be a very simple or cheap solution to the problem. -

I haven't read through this whole thing, but have you gone to a pro shop? -
I'm not big on neck shots, but have taken one or two in "ideal" conditions....I always aimed towards the upper portion of the neck, just below the head, the bottom portion has a lot of room for error in my opinion.
-
I think we all need a basic understanding of the anatomy, and then a little bit of common sense sprinkled in to make the best shot we can. I'll admit that in my early Archery years I took some shots that should never have been taken, and by whatever luck, I only lost two......not broadhead failure, not by the deer moving, not by anything other then my own stupidity. It really is a sickening feeling to watch the shot you never should have taken go bad..............there's no shortage of hunters who don't care, and I experienced that first hand during my years with my tracking dog, and that's what made me give that up eventually, nothing else but the attitudes of some of the "hunters" I tracked for.
-
I never thought I'd say this, but one of the benefits to hunting on long Island is that all the State and County owned lands are marked with parking spots.........only 1 vehicle for spot in most areas, kinda keeps you from running into other hunters for the most park, but it is way over regulated to some extent.
-
I would gladly have some of my tax dollars go towards a program like that, when you sit back and consider that most of us pay for other programs that the vast majority of us will never benefit from, why not this as well?........if you're paying taxes, you've been paying for other people to do things all along......School taxes, how many people no longer have kids, but keep having to pay? only a handful of kids get to play sports and other school activities, but we all pay for that.....public assistance, aka welfare, we're paying for that.......the list is endless of things we all pay for but most likely will never reap the benefits of......

there's a lot of "oh sh*t" deadly shots out there.....I once shot a buck in the lower part of his back leg, got the femoral artery and he was dead within seconds, but I never want to do that again.
-
I hunted State lands in The Catskills since the late 70's and if I was too young to hunt at the time I was tagging along.......and if those deer didn't have a safe place to run to, they would have been wiped out, and a lot of them were...and I'm not even joking.
-
food source, gotta get out there and find the food source.
-
I get the whole overpopulation, over browsing, disease thing, but it's private land...case closed. I think the State trying some type of incentive program for landowners to open their property to hunters is a great thing.....and it may work, but other then that it's a dead end road.
-
I haven't ran into another bowhunter in my public land spot in years.
-
I don't own land for hunting, I'd rather spend my money on other things......quite honestly there are thousands of acres of public land available for me to hunt on, I've never had the need to knock on a door for a place to hunt..........with that being said, I have zero problem with anyone who owns their own land posting the sh*t out of it and keeping everyone else off of it, and I don't even care the reason, whether it be leasing, for themselves and family, an anti hunter, a tree hugger, whatever, it's none of my business. It's like me wanting to use someones brand new car because I can't afford one or choose not to buy one, it doesn't work like that in my book.....I don't have a swimming pool, but you do, can I bring the kids over whenever I want and use it??
-
yeah, I should have just left well enough alone and not ruined two arrows.........well anyway that inspired me to start making my own arrows anyway.
-
well, I just tried removing the inserts with the drill bit down the shaft method and after doing two I noticed the arrows where bulging at the point where the original insert was glued in, so that's two I won't even attempt to use.....guess I'll use them as is or find someone who wants them at the current length.
-
I hunt whenever possible as well, but I also believe there are certain conditions that make being out there a must.
-
good point.....couldn't imagine trying to hold that over my head while trying to get the straps and chains around the tree at the same time.
-
in addition to moon phases, high and low pressure systems and barometric pressure play a huge part in deer activity....while I don't follow that too much, I know hunters that follow it religiously and are quite successful in doing so.
