  1. Nice bird!

What did the permit run you? I might keep that in mind for when I go visit my Mom in Darlington County. I just hate the thought of poisonus reptiles! It seems like the leaves on the ground are so thick because they don't really get snow to pack them down. That's perfect habitat for serpents!!!!

You will need a big game license (which is good for 1 year from date of purchase),$100, and a turkey permit (I got the 3 day), $40, and turkey transportation tags which are free. you can take 2 per day with a 5 bird limit. good luck.

  2. had a chance to get a three day turkey permit last week while i was down visiting family near Aiken, SC. called in one gobbler first day, called in a mix of gobblers and jakes second day, and the third day was 40 mph winds and sideways rain. only got wet the third day, there was at least two long beards and 3-4 jakes that stayed in the scrub oaks and none presented a shot that i would take. the gobbler on the first day came right on in and was taken at 20 yards. the bird weighed 21 lbs, had three beards (9", 7 1/4", 4 1/4"), and 7/8" spurs.

  3. lived in Va till i was 11. dont remember when i started shooting a 22. very early. got a new Sears mod 20 12ga when i turned 9. still have that gun. my dad would not let my brother and i have the BB guns my uncle bought for us for our birthdays one year. when asked later on in life why? he said he was afraid we would think they were "toys" and not have the respect due them. started my children as soon as they could understand sight picture. 2 - 3 years old. never too early to teach proper gun handling and respect. respect for not only guns but life in general, and especially human life.

  4. i have seen a few gobblers this winter. always a rush. good luck Rev Ed, on your NC turkey hunt. i am going to SC for their opener on April 1st. my brother has 160 acres there and he dont hunt turkeys. says hes got plenty.

  6. I have been to that same exact spot a bunch of years ago. It's along a hiking trail that we took. However I can't tell you what that thing is. It seems to me there were some other parts of these kinds of constructions located there also.

its about 200 yards up the hill from the hiking trail, (Finger Lakes i think), above Coon Run.

this is about 20 yards away.

this is about ten feet away. i have an uncle named Rick that used to hunt ASP a lot. he lives in franklinville now. need to show him the pic and see if he did this.

  7. +2 for line 4. plus line five: "I have reason to belive that I may be setting myself up for unwarranted harassment as there are a lot of anti-gun and anti-hunters out there that exhibit irrational behavior from time to time. specific harrassing and terrorist acts (with dates, times, and persons involved) to serve as additional supportive information availible on request." REASON ENOUGH!!!

  8. lived in Arkansas for 10 years but, it never became "home". came back to NY in 2002 for many of the reasons already mentioned. fantastic fishing and hunting. 2 gobblers each spring. 4-6 dear each fall. more bass, catfish, stripers than i could clean. but it wasnt home. if i HAD to leave, it would be back to Arkansas. BUT, the federal laws will get you no matter where you go unless you leave the country. the FREEDOM FIGHT must start somewhere, might just as well be here since there are no more "AMERICAS" to settle. i reckon i will stay and do what i can TO STOP "THE TYRANNY OF ALBANY".

  9. after 46 turkey kills, hunting them since i was 14, in three different states, i have to say " they still beat me more than i beat them". unlike humans, they are not predictable, but if i had one hard rule it would be to get between where he is and where he wants to go. scout, scout, scout, if possible, find out where he is going and how he gets there. another hard rule, especially in the mountains like in Allegany county,(killed my first NY bird in Almond), is to always be as high up the hill as possible when working a bird. welcome and good luck. plenty of help here.

  10. ........"unless everyone is willing to continue with thier traditions right up to the point of not hunting," .......

thanks for expounding on this part of my post, i reckon i should have. we have been talking about getting a cabin in ASP during Thanksgiving, maybe this is the year.

  11. You may be correct but NY has record of raiding these funds they are not in a locked box. Then there are the ancillary effects of fewer tax dollars generated by the sport. If the objection to a boycott is that it would adversley affect the sport I could support that argument but if the argument is because someone did not personally want to give up a year of hunting in NY then I find that argument a little shallow. I myself plan on hunting VT or Ohio. I choose to support a state that supports my rights and does not take them away by fiat.

to my knowledge NY state has not been able to raid the conservation fund although they threatened to last year or the year before. and lets not forget that fewer tax dollars means that there where fewer sales in all areas of business. from the big store to mom and pop shops that seem to depend on the seasonal sales to survive. unless everyone is willing to continue with thier traditions right up to the point of not hunting, are we willing to also "boycott" the motel we stay at for the week, or the diner that opens for the hunters at 4am, the grocery store that we have gone to for beer and chips for the past 20 years, not to mention the clothing, guns, ammo, ect, ect, to deprive not just NYS of a few tax dollars, but also our towns and countys. i too hunt out of state most years. PA, AR, going to SC in April for a few days of turkey hunting and fishing, and plan to hunt OH someday. i will do my fishing and hunting and trapping somewhere, but before i boycott NY licenses i must also consider others that may "depend" on my support. i agree that something needs to be done and soon. i have signed and support all the petions and law suits i have found to be legit and i urge others to do likewise. its quite some time before new licenses go on sale, so there is plenty of time for us to consider all the aspects and results of a boycott. others please chime in with thoughts so as to have a big picture with all the details to make informed choices.

    thank you.

  12. wlecome ekp.

i assume you are talking about boycotting hunting and fishing licenses for next year.

it is my understanding that money from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses goes into the conservation fund to support hunting and fishing activities and programs and related areas. unless the state government decides to do something illegal they cant touch this money. seems like a boycott such as this would hurt us rather than teach the state a lesson.

some one feel free to add or correct me as this is my understanding.

again welcome ekp and good luck

  13. i used ground meat once, didnt like the crumbly crap. i always slice. and i never use the curing salts included with the prepackaged seasoning. only the spices. you never know, you may find some combo you like.

when i wanted to corn venison i used many combos of "corning" brine. some i concocted myself and some i found online. the best for me is the stuff i get from iron skillet. i guess i just like to expriment. well, good luck in your search.

  14. i made turkey jerky with a burbon flavored deer jerky mix. dont remember the brand of the mix but the jerky was very excellent. one of the best i ever had. if i remember the brand name i will add to this post. good luck.

  15. got a 7x57 mauser that was already sporterized from my brother back in the late 70"s.

shot great, rolled my own ammo. killed 20 deer in Arkansas, Pa, and NY. gave it back to my brother last march. loved the gun and the round but, if i was going to buy a gun that i was going to travel with, it would be a 30-06 for a number of reasons. with proper loads it will take down any thing on this continent. if you reload or know someone that does, you can shoot any where from a 100 grain plinker to 180gr + for big game. rounds can be loaded to suit your recoil comfort level. but the biggest reason i would go for an '06 is that the ammo is readily available no matter where you go, US or Canada. fail to have ammo because you forgot or it got lost or miss placed by transportation company or maybe brought the wrong caliber with you, you would be glad for a round that is on the shelf where ever you go.

    good luck.
