  1. Not to mention the occational one that would break free from the killing funnel and the hassle of trying to catch the headless thing before it spewed blood all over...they can run a surprisingly long time with out a head....freaked the kids out the first time it happened....lol

DOn't cut the heads all the way off when they are in the funnel, pull down on the head and slit the throat and hold the head until it stops kickin then cut it all the way off

  2. This might sound obvious and silly but often gets over looked. "Go to where the deer are!" I know a lot of people loooking at maps to see topography and, possible chokes points in the geography, food sources, etc... Now mind you these are valuable tools but you have to put boots to the ground and look for heavily used trails, poop, scrapes, rubs, and general sign of a lot of deer activity. Another thing thats important is just being in the woods. Can't kill deer behind a computer.

  3. What I find intresting that deers nerves in the spine cross over so if a buck has an injury to the rear leg it with effect antler growth on the opposite side. Example a buck with a broken left leg will have a deformed right antler.

  4. I think we all have stories of someone doing something questionable and we shake are heads. I knew a guy who was so proud of a monster he got. I was kinda of jealous until I heard the story how he shot a nice one and was waiting in his stand for his dad when a dandy came over so he shot that one and lef the first one that was smaller. I don't know what I would have done if I heard the story at the time not years later but I consider a poached deer not a trophy.

  5. I was in the woods in Carmel, NY. Watching an open area next to heavy pines. I could see through my scope out to 40-50yards well before 630am. With the naked eye I could see the 40-50yards just after 6am.

I was just over the hill in putnam but I was on the darkside of a mt. It was light enough that I could walk around at 6:15 but not good for shootin. Another hunter walked right past me and didn't notice until I'll whistled. When The sun popped over the ridge it got real bright fast though

  6. I know I'm going to get crushed for saying this but I rarely check the time. This morning I was supprised that I only heard a few shots before I could see because 2 years ago I heard about 30 and couldn't see my hand in front of me. I find deer very hard to see unless they are really close in low light and would not recommnend shooting. That being said I think don't I ever shot a deer before 8:00am. I also wait until its completely dark out to hike out and use my flashlight so I don't look like a giant orange 2 legged deer!

  7. a prerut buck is sooo much nicer tasting. I shot a 150lb 5 point on 10/22 and he's leaps and bounds better tasting than the 160lb 9 i shot on thanksgiving last year.

I don't think age or time of year matter as much as diet. I've had two does within a week part roughly same age/size and one had a tangy taste. By the way the curse of the btn buck continues I saw another one last night

  8. Steve I already rested my case you admittidly have no experince with a 223 therefore you don't know what your talking about when in comes to a 223. Go shoot a deer with one and if you are less then satisifed with the outcome come here and tell me so but otherwise you really don't have a leg to stand on

  9. Zhe Wiz, I think people hunt with as you put it "<insert unnecessarily overpowered caliber here> for several reasons.

1.)Thats whats everyone else is using

    2.)Bigger is better

3.)Never used anything smaller, unaware how well they work

4.)One gun for everything from woodchucks to moose

5.)Over compensating, for poor shooting(get you mind out of the gutter)

    6.)Parroting what others say

    7.)They lack experience
