Don’t worry I’ll be out tomorrow and Tuesday and perhaps right through the next weekend. After 40 years of deer hunting , I just prefer to avoid bad weather if I can . Good luck .
-
Well worth the 20 minutes I thought . Never heard of the other guy , but the rest seemed spot on . http://www.wideopenspaces.com/michael-waddell-sounds-off-on-the-chris-brackett-news-the-state-of-the-outdoor-industry-and-more/

Everything or nothing , depending how you want to look at it .
-
Id get that checked out .

High winds, rain and the farm is already all flooded and muddy , oh and I sat all day and saw ZERO deer no,thanks I'm on the couch . Supposed to do an afternoon sit with my daughter who worked a 12 hour night shift , we'll see . The farmer , all my hunting buddies, guys at work all shot bucks yesterday . I have all or parts of the next 7 days to hunt .
-
Getting pics from guys from across NY and Tenn. I did not see a deer!! But no rain and I found some spots with no wind, I’m now staying all day . No food as I thought I’d be leaving here soaked by 9:00 . Congrats to all !
-
No rain , no deer either .I may even come back and hunt last light .
-
Windy not much rain st all , no deer either . 3 shots up to 7;30 , quite a number since ..
-
Well I slept really well , but im here 30 minutes early ! Oh well hope I don’t fall asleep in the car .... Rain starts in 54 minutes awesome .
-
Yes , last year when this came up ..... I researched neighboring states, known popular deer hunting states , western states , I could not find one with NYS sunrise to sunset laws . Every . Single . One . Was half hour before and after . Which is what we have here , unofficially . I bet that an easy 25 % and perhaps as many as 50% of deer taken here are outside legal hours , based on shots I hear .

I read a book by the guy who's started the leashed tracking dogs program in NYS . He was Personaly on about one thousand tracking jobs of wounded/ lost deer . In that book he stated that the number one caliber used by guys that called him was the .243 . Now consider that is not one of the top five caliber / gauge used , yet number one for lost deer . I wanted to switch my daughter from shotgun to rilfe , I went 7mm08 .

I walk in mostly on the edge of fields and I like to see what's in them , to avoid busting them , so just as its staring to get light . I d rather sleep, longer and stay on stand as late as I can if its cold or rainy , I prefer the hours on stand to be when I can shoot not waiting to shoot . Tomorrows sit I'll be on a field they cross early , but don't feed or hang out in, so any time in the dark is largely a waste . Personally I hope to be on stand a few minutes before shooting light and done no later then 30 minutes later .

can you explain why hunters would want to shorten gun season?

Montana's gun season runs Sept 15 to the end of Nov .That hits the rut pretty good . -

Yes ! I have a friend in Montana , I've hunted there , the 2 mile section of river bottom we hunt , we seldom see another Hunter . The state is what 4 times the size of NY with I'd guess at least 10 times the land to,hunt and fewer hunters and very few roads , miles and miles of crops . I don't recall ever hearing a gun shot that wasn't ours . One spot he hunts you can see 300 deer a day ! But few hunters . When I brought my deer to " town" I drove 80 MPH for like an hour and saw a hand full of cars / trucks on the road . I remember telling him I have more bowhunters within a 100 mile radius then He has in the whole state . -
Ya last I looked it was dry till 7:00 ish for me , if that goes out to 8:30 I’ll be happy
-
This keeps me dry and I can cook hot soup on my jet boil too! Just not where I want to be OD .
-
Sampler plater from Swans meat market . Real German food, in the “hood.”
-
Culver, I think that all day rain on OD may have been ‘96 or ‘97 ? I say that as my FIL died In late ‘97 and I remember drying our hunting clothes at his house eating lunch with him and going back out that day . I also shot a 7pt and a Doe on that OD. Sat. I’m Layering up in gore Tex and sitting on a field they cross early, should also be the Lee side of the woods . Last a couple hours and I’ll be back Sun and Mon.
-
Ok I'm a hunter so I look forward to OD, but I can't remember the last year I killed a buck on OD, well I do it was idk 6,7 years ago . Mostly by choice as a gun buck has to be bigger then my bow buck , this year any buck would be ..... If it's raining hard I'll sit as long as I can in the AM and that may be it for the day . No big deal to me the older bucks survived a few seasons, most will make it past Sat .

Agree Fletch , NY has room to,improve , who, thinks it's better in those states? Id add Texas to the list too, buddy moved there , hated the deer hunting , very little public land and big bucks to hunt private . -
I had a broken brow tine repaired on a mount , I took a lot of grief here over it . But I'm happy with it . Do what you want .

I'd like to see a break down of the numer killed by date . How many are killed in the last week that we'd do away with ? Most here say the woods are empty by then . -
Relying on tracker/dogs is out of control!
Nomad replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in Deer Hunting
DB , thank you . My first bow kill in '89 was my first year bow hunting was at 8 yards , all since have been under 20 but one , that one was 25 and she piled up,in sight . Ive lost two in all those years and one of those I found a year later ..... They were front quartering , but not hard , still one lunged and pushed to soon , I learned and haven't taken a front quartering shot in many years . I always say the " hunting " is done with the hanging of the stands , the rest is waiting for them to walk by at 15 yards . -
Cabin Fever, you and I share so much this season . I have stands on the edge of a 15 acre thicket , it would be dead silent , where most years I'd hear antlers banging , running ,grunting , this year zippo ! I just trimmed out a gun stand I never got to, put my bow away and got out the warm, orange rain gear . I did the 8th grade trip to DC we had like 8 busses , our school only took parents who were police , fire and ems . It was pretty impressive all the pre planning that went into it .
