  1. Just a thought....Sounds like she needs quite a bit more practice shooting rifles with work on her technique. Any scoped .22 would do fine. Get the technique down for proper rifle holding and positioning. then any reasonable light recoil rifle shouldnt bother her any. She will probably have a nasty flinch to get over. With enough shooting, she will naturally start shooting with both eyes open anyway.
  2. Hunting is about the first shot...not the last. Single shots, bolts, pumps, levers, generally all are more inexpensive than semi rifles, usually more rifle for the buck. Also, Semi rifles tend to be a bit more finicky, with reasonable limits on the size of the cartridge.
  3. I think a huge percentage of pickups sit in driveways or are just a image commuting car, so electric is fine and logical. For anyone towing/ distance hauling or tips, basically anything other than just day to day commuting, we need at least a hybrid gas.
  4. I had a patient that had taxidermied all thier yip dogs when they died. Freaked me out. Would you want your mother in law peering down at you? That said, I think the coyote is very cool. the stifffness of so many mounts takes away from the reality.
  5. Last year was the first in over thirty years I didnt get a deer. I was bumming only because we love venison, but otherwise no big deal. I had a few opportunities to fill, but didnt. This year I will be a bit more hard core. I will have a doe permit to use along with my ML tag and regular season tag, That said, one deer is usually enough with some venision usually left in the freezer, but this year I would like two so we can have some sausage, etc. made.
  6. Looks like it has been there a while. It is illegal to transport without a tag...as Chef said, call for a roadkill tag then you can legally move it. You can move it from one spot on your property to another. I doubt any public entity will touch it. There are generally way to many of them to worry about.
  7. I was in the BP in Utica this afternoon. They had about the best ammo supply I had seen in 18 months, but that wasnt saying much. Mostly the more popular handgun cartridges, shotgun, and the top most popular 4 or five rifle calibers. Things are improving. I have found reloading primers in several locations online this week....small and large both handgun and rifle, magnum and non magnum. Prices werent great but werent price gouging either.
  8. The amount of meat damage from the 45-70 is directly related to how much bone you bust up. Generally, the big fat moving slugs do not have much hydrostatic damage like you might find with a .270 or similar, It is closer to the damage from a round ball from a ML.
  9. Every chance I get! Nothing makes me happier than having a project firearm to muckle with. I know what I can do ,shouldnt do, and what someone else should do though. I have made firing pins and other replacement parts for some obsolete firearms. I do have experience with mills and lathes, but keep things simple. I have forgotten way too much. Most recently I have been having fun tuning/improving my muzzleloaders, which usually are quite easy to work on. Most recently mounting, after drilling and tapping a Williams target peep on a Thompson Center Renegade. Sights are almost always the first to be replaced, and almost all locks need honing. I recently built a Kibler Longrifle kit (found on a separet thread somewhere on here) which brought a bunch of new challenges in fine woodworking.
  10. As someone else mentioned, the #1 is a falling block single shot. It has a lever which operates the lowering of the block for loading/unloading. If you wanted a repeating rifle...lever action, not what you want, even though it is a very fine rifle. Any cartridge can be shot at the range or hunted with pretty much. That said, the 45-70 has a very heavy recoil especially in a relatively light rifle like the #1. It is an expensive round to shoot (bigger the bullet, the more expensive in simplest terms). Currently...like with many rounds, you will have difficulty finding rounds for it, but not historically. I have a 45-70 (Browning single shot, quite similar to yours) which is one of my favorite rifles. That said, once sighted in it stays in the gun closet, comes out for a few shots before a hunt (it is my bear rifle and has counted for four) and for the hunt, then goes back in. I reload for it, but it is difficult to load it down for any real "comfort" zone, and my loads actually are quite stiff. It is a fine rifle for what sounds like a good price (sight unseen) but if you want a lever action for the range (so I am thinking likely a 30-30) you may be happier to keep looking.
  11. My preferred quote, from the soldiers left on the Ukrainian island as the Russian fleet is approaching and asks for their surrender.... Loosely quoted......." Russian Ship...Go F... yourself". pardon my language... Remember the Alamo!
  12. I have always taken great pride as an American, that our leaders didnt stoop to the level of so many other countries...treating each other with respect, and maintaining our nations dignity. Politics is politics, but there is no place for the trash behavior that has become common place. I am a registered Republican...but I am embarrassed by my parties behavior. That is the view of us the world gets, including a percieved lack of unity. Remember when Reagan came into office? there was a huge gap between parties then, but Ronnie pulled us together as a nation, despite different beliefs. Even the democrats....maybe not liking his politics, but could respect the man. I am no fan of Bidens. But he is our duly elected president, and our best show of support is to show respect. It doesnt help that easy access to our electronic media allows every ignorant ... a soap box, while most of the more intelligent folks simply know it is better to keep quiet.
  13. Not to side bar the original thread, but what have you always craved after being in the backwoods/ away from home, etc. for a week? We are always craving 1) milk, 2) a good salad, 3) Pizza.
  14. Venison cutlets seared rare, Silver queen corn on the cob...steamed...STEAMED DAMMIT no more than 4 minutes, Columbus bakery flat bread still warm from the oven, two lobster tails broiled, a dozen raw Chesapeake bay oysters with just a touch of lemon, fresh cucumber and onion in sour cream/malted vinegar dressing. Two Bass ales in frosted glass (fresh frosted glass for each,) with two Guiness following. Finish with double Woodford Reserve bourbon neat....
  15. Looks like it has good weight, but definetly something going on. I would err on caution and avoid having any feed/food, etc. that would attract deer to minimize contact with them.
  16. This is my newly completed Kibler Colonial rifle in .58. I am waiting for the snow to clear from the range so I can burn some powder..
  17. Dinosaur can ...and likely will be crazy. No reservations. For someplace a bit more mellow, down in armory square (actually just strait up the road a few blocks,) Kitty Hoynes is our favorite regular spot. Irish bar, more mature, probably the best bar food/light meals and casual dining down town. Best time to hit Dinosaur is weekdays/evenings.
  18. Never had it done, but involved with quite a few patients and family members who did.... To reduce risk of complications stack everything in your favor. First, if you smoke / use nicotine, quit. As a vasoconstrictor, your eyes suffer, and especially after surgery they need all the health they can get. After that, ask you doc about recommendations for shooting afterward, and follow them. Most folks after surgery have an astounding improvement. My wife has worn glasses for at least forty years. Now she only needs them occaissionally, usually for reading and office work. Your eyes can also retrain themselves to a certain extent, and what works for someone else may not work at all for you.
  19. For about thirty years I had craved a 1911, and a few years ago finally made the plunge. Must haves...minimal "combat" customization...I love the plane jane GI issue...but sights stink. Steel. Colt. The original. Must have a pony on it. In my opinion they have been the original manufacturer of the 1911 since...1911, they have the most experience, I did not want a "Johnny Come Lately". The Colt Competition stayed true to the original lines pretty much, with some internal modernization including competition trigger and sights. The girly blue grips didnt last 1/2 an hour at home. Due to reloading / ammo supplies, I havent shot it as much as I wish I had, but I have around 700 rounds through it with out a single failure. Mine was about 900.oo. Sure you can find a plane jane Phillipine 1911 that will go "bang" for around five hundred, but are you going to get an evil smile on your face every time you look at it like I do with the real Mccoy?
  20. I was delighted to find a signed first edition of Fred Bears Field Notes, for ten bucks! Great out door stories from his career. Even though strictly an archer, anyone can appreciate the hunts/adventures he had.
  21. I read it last winter. Very interesting read, but I got a bit tired of his..."style" after a while. I loved his show and regret his end, but probably would not have enjoyed his company.
  22. I found your rifle in the round you wanted at this place....799. I purchased my Mauser online (549.00!) and had it delivered to a local area firearm dealer for about six hundred total. Sauer 100 Rifles - EuroOptic.com
  23. ATbuckhunter, there is no reason whatsoever to recommend one over the other than my being a huge Mauser fan and I could never afford the M8 or a modern produced 98. If you liked one of the three offered rounds you might just be able to save a chunk of cash over the Sauer is all.
  24. Mine is up year round with little exception. I find it more entertaining than TV.
