  1. Robhunt... I had been up to and hiked Chimney several times...we had a great time exporing the little caves and passages that abound there. Each time I told myself I needed to come back with the wife for a week end at the cabins. You are motivating me.
  2. Tough call...I love to fish, and don't have as much opportunity to as I used to. If the chance comes up to fish with friends, I am gone. Most of my hunting is done by myself, so I tend to do a lot more of it in season. This time of year, fishing is great, I would probably opt for fishing.
  3. It would help if you marked the pics with the N, S, E and west . That aside, I consider what will be behind me, my approach, the sun not highlighting me, activity in the field...I myself prefer not to hunt so much the field, as the approaches to the fields if there are crops.
  4. I try to get out for northern tier grouse as soon as I can. I enjoy the reason for a walk in the woods more than I am concerned for shooting them, and it is great opportunity for scouting.
  5. I have a lot of wool. and love it, but find I don't wear it as much as I used to. If I am sitting on stand there is nothing I love more than my Johnson wool parka, it just feels like..."home". I wear a wool jack/shirt frequently when I am still hunting...nothing quieter. If it is wet out though, and I like to hunt the slop, I am going to have my Goretex parka and bibs on. If I am stand hunting, I want my rubber packs. If I am still hunting, I love Bean style boots. I think the sole design is better for sneaking around, but you have to be aware of your footing.
  6. I understand CNY is loaded with indian artifacts, but our seasonal leaf drop and heavy agricultural use has hidden it very well. The book "Wilderness War" about the Sullivan campaign locates quite a number of large sites, most of which and specifically, are buried beneath modern growth (Syracuse sewage tx plant, the State Fair upper parking lots being two). I was delighted to have been shown flint knappings uncovered by a recent rain, by a naturalist at a popular hiking location though. He reported arrowheads, etc. were found regularly by the employees, at that time. A cousin lived for a time on an island in the Chesapeake bay, which was heavily used by a number of tribes, and he had a collection of thousands (private land, mostly undeveopled). Amazing
  7. Hey Predate... Are your artifacts NY origin or elsewhere? One of the areas (west shore Seneca Lake) is known to produce arrowheads, etc. every now and then, but I haven't been lucky enough yet....keep hoping!
  8. I probably enjoy squirrel hunting more than deer hunting...they are plentiful, easy access to find them, and can be very challenging. Unfortunately, I have never found a way to cook them I enjoy, so I seldom pursue them. I love spring bear hunting. It is a great time of the year to be in the woods, and you see all sorts of critters, I never get tired of watching bears.
  9. Where they are managed and legal, why not? I have no interest in one, but I have no issue with someone else going after one. She specifically was targeting a mature declining animal, that was a threat to the local heard. Wise management practice in my opinion.
  10. My wife likes to fish every now and then, usually perch which are fun to catch. She has a pellet gun she likes to shoot every now and then. She doesnt want to hunt here in NY, but we have a trip to S. Africa in two years, and she wants to accompany me as I do... so I hope to get her to tag along a bit before hand to get the feel for it.
  11. The past several years my Savage 99 .308. If I am in a stand, probably my 8 mm Mauser.
  12. That looks cool as all hell! Without knowing anything about what they normally go for, if I had the pocket change, I would be tempted. I am not too sure on the practicality end of it...I wonder how that big rimmed cartridge would feed, but for a fun range gun ...and no reason whatsoever it shouldn't be hunted with (other than I have a 45-70 Browning 1886), what the heck. My guess is the demand is low for a bolt 45-70 with the lever actions being so popular right now.
  13. It sounds like he isn't going to notice the difference no matter what you put on it. Having said that, I still have a phobia of Simmons, cheap Bushnells,, Tascos, etc. going back many moons, when they were as reliable as tissue for an umbrella. I have had several of the Cabelas Pine Ridge scopes that have done fine duty on my .22s. I would also go a simple fixed four power, just make it a one inch scope. He should never need to worry about another. I have a long love affair with Leupolds, but would have a tough time spending the dough (even for a used one,) for a 10//22.
  14. there is an old saying..."strong as an ox" Arent oxen vegetarian/ vegan?
  15. I have an obsession with the fall, and wait eagerly for it ….from the time winter starts! I look forward to deer hunting, but not as much as when we had more folks to get out with. Summer is so busy, it is difficult to think about it too much, but as seasons go by the actual bagging of a deer is much less important, though I still want the venison. I am lucky enough to be going to Newfoundland this fall (September) for moose, and as a result I wont spend anywhere near as much time hunting as usual, but am sure I will spend as much time as ever up a the camp enjoying the season.
  16. On a very hot summer day several years ago, we went out on one of the antique speedboat rides....25.oo apiece, but it was great! It made for a great break in the day. If I remember correctly, the boat we were on was a reproduction of a mid 1939s Garwood speed boat, donated to the museum (which is how they get most of the boats). Wellesley Island State Park (you cross the bridge from the mainland, toll) has a fantastic nature center with a lot of events, and extensive hiking trails, many along the river. It is another regular stop for us.
  17. We frequent the area. Clayton is a little bit more "grown up " than Alexandria Bay. Uncle Sam Boat tours in Alex bay is a great way to spend a fair part of the day. They offer several different trips, check them out online. They all stop at Boldt Castle, which we always enjoy. It has been turned from a ruin almost to the point of needing dynamite to bringing a lot of it to the planned end state. It also is online to check out. Clayton is a nice riverside town to walk around, with a lot of waterfront. We love Bella's for lunch. the glass bottom tour is fun, but pretty limited what you can actually see. In Clayton the Clayton Boat Museum (or is it the Thousand Island Boat museum?) is a must see for lovers of old and historic boats. they also are online. If you have an extra afternoon, drive up to Ogdensburg and go through the Frederick Remington Museum. Very interesting, a lot of his original work. You will leave a fan. You definitely want to make reservations for a hotel this time of year. If you cant get one ( a distinct possibility this time of year) look into the Sacketts Harbor area, which is nearby and very nice and historical also. Watertown is about 30 minutes away, with lots of hotels too. Remember you can no longer cross into Canada without a passport.
  18. Here is a lonely winter pic of our little place up on the Tug. Since then I have added an enclosed porch where the little back porch is, and a rain water collection system for flushing and washing.
  19. I was going to answer as the question was asked, but with more thought, I guess I agree that it isn't wise for CCP owners to discuss publicly their preferences, and isn't polite to ask. My friends/ acquaintances know I don't want to be asked if we are out. 3rd party / indirectly involved individuals overhearing conversations can lead to unnecessary comments/ identification.
  20. If money allowed, I would get Larry Romano Firearms (Alamo Gunshop) in Pennelville NY making me one of his beautiful Ballard single shots, undecided round, but maybe 45-70 or maybe even 30/40 Krag. My pocket book being what it is, I would love to get ahold of one of the new Henry breaktop single shot rifles, blue and walnut please, in .308, and put my standard scope on top: Leupold VX 3 in 1.5 x 5.
  21. over the past two years, I have had them sell (auction ) a number of my firearms, pistol and long gun. With the difficulty of "casual sales" and the horrible prices offered by gun shops, they were the simplest, most reliable and profitable way to go. I usually received about going rate, BUT they get a 20% commission!' They also advertise with good pictures your items and handle all paperwork. Several of my firearms I received quite a bit more than was expected....but that is luck, someone in the audience wanting what you have then and there. If some one I know is interested in one of my firearms, I will sell it casual sale, but otherwise I will certainly use them again, and my wife understands that if something happens to me, to utilize them.
  22. here is another great road trip song..."Vehicle" ww.youtube.cwom/watch?v=yyxgaZjV-hU
  23. I would just drop a hand full at a time in the weekly kitchen garbage. They will breakdown eventually into harmless factors, and are less a concern than an aerosol can .
  24. wallowing as he walks....looks pretty good to me!
