I'd like to address a few things, one is with this Turk guy, yes a did buy a property to build my dream home and have my own hunting land, its wasn't cheap and the money was hard earned. And yes I wanted my house high and dry, so yes my house is in the woods. The problem is??? Also, ironically there is a smelly farm by us and we love it! My wives family runs a dairy farm and we open the windows when the smell of the slurry settles into the valley to make her feel at home. Not quite sure what you were getting at there or why the personal attack? Next I ranged the distance from the deer from the corner of my house. The deer were in the middle of his parcel. His parcel is 1 acre+/- but a pie shaped one acre so he probably 200' in his max lot depth. so, he was either in his house garage or shed. My 500' would put me into his house. Let's assume here that he was 500' from my house and that he has permission to shoot at moving animals from the 4 houses on around him. We've all been in the woods when a distant shot goes off and it startles us. So, although I was in my house I still jumped at the two shots and if I was in my front yard I would have shlt my pants. At that point 911 would have been called right away. Now the deer was hit and eventually ran over my yard and driveway. Do we know that this jackass would not have tried to put that deer down??? OK, he's told me he's shooting into the hill, well its my hill and if my kids are on my hill on my property in front of my house is it still a good idea to use that as a backstop, ahh no!!!. Further more, is the law intending to put hunting, stalking and sitting in your treestand 500' from houses too? Does the DEC really want us driving deer out of land that may be 100' from a house, but we just can't shoot... if a hunter walks close behind houses he's going to get the cops called on him or her. Some, of you guys say the ECO would have done nothing to this guy..what??? He walked across my lawn and driveway tracking a deer with a gun in his hand, and was met with my wife driving up our driveway. This guy would have received multiply tickets and had a pretty big hastle to deal with. And the more I read the posts, like from the TURK and Backstrap guy, the more I want to call this in just to get a report on file. Out of a neighbor curtesy I did not, and its a risk I'm taking. Now that the snow is mealting to cover up the evidence, I should call to get this on file. I'm sure the ECO would have a field day with investigating this, talking with neighbors and my family and asking this guys what the hell he was thinking. Does he have better things to do, maybe but I think they'd really want to know this happended. You always hear about non hunting people hearing shots real close to houses or seeing hunters driving deer through the back lot too close to the houses,or what ever and it leaves a very negative feeling about us. So, some of these comments I'm seeing are the mentality that the antis love to hear about to use as amunition against us. Some guys will do whatever it takes to get a deer and its usually the easy route by pushing the limits of common sense and the law. I have an area I hunt on my land about 1200-1500' from a house, I call him every year to remind them its hunting season and I have stand behind their house. Do I have to no, but I know its loud and scary to hear shots. I know exactly where the house is and where I can't and can shoot. All my shots hit my earth!!! They call me when I shoot on my cell to ask if it was me, because we have had some problems with other hunters in the past. They are OK with it and we have a good neighbor relationship. Share equipment and kids are friends. They are not hunters. I posted this to vent to hunters, but probably should have thought about it a little longer, its been interesting....where's the Tums.

I just ranged it to the trees where I saw the deer and its 405-435'. I'm going to tell him the distance and make sure he knows I'm seroiusly at the end of my rope with this. The only saving grace is that he is about 100'+ feet lower, but you can't fix stupid

I hear ya and if he was a stranger after I got done kicking his ass he would been arrested. But like I said above.... BTW: I don't think you have to be 500' from roadway, just not in the public right of way???

we live back in the woods and have two daughters and a son who are home alone alot , just trying to keep things as friendly as possible. God forbid, I need help from the jackass for something in the future. fire, robbery, who knows I was very harsh and direct on the phone and think he knows I'm not messing around. If I read this post I would definetly think the poster is nuts not to call right awaand agree with the posts, but needed to speak to him first to keep some neighbor traits going with him.

He just called and stated that he is 500 feet from my house and the other neighbors don't care its just me (or know). He said he came into my yard because I was yelling at him and wanted to talk. I told him he's hunted long enough to know a deer will not drop that often and then end up in my yard and that he can't hunt there anymore its just too tight of a spot. He agreed and gave me his word that he would not hunt there again, he has other spots he said. I told him if I see any sign of hunting I will call on him right away and my wife may call now anyway. I think I got through to him now, but who knows he's a jackass. He apologized multiply times and seemed real scared?!?!

We have to live with this guy right in front of our house, so I want to talk to him first. I'm hoping to reason with him, but would love to call ECO on him, its his call how its handled.

I have a neighbor who feels his one acre of land is big enough to hunt. The parcel is located in front of my house and has 4 houses less than 500feet. I caught him looking for a deer last year in my brush front of my house and asked him what he was doing he said he shot a deer in his yard and was looking for it. When I told him I felt he was not able to hunt there and that I did not want him hunting there with my house right up the hill in plain sight, he said "dont' worry I'm shooting into the hill". I said it doesn't matter my kids sled and play in our front yard..... Well yesterday I'm sledding with my daughter in the front yard and about 3:45 we went in for some hot chocolate. With in a few minutes I see some deer run into the back yard and was glassing them. A spike and 3 does. Then bang bang, I keep looking and see nothing esle. 20 minutes later the spike runs through my yard pretty well, but his left leg is hurt and bleeding, the deer runs into my other heighbors yard. Then I see this guys in orange movin in the brush on our property border. I yell down to him that we were just sledding there and I don't want him hunting there anymore.I saw the deer and its running fine and bla bla bla. Next thing I see is him in my yard tracking this deer. My wife comes home and stops to see why he is in my yard with a gun. He says to her "is that your husband yelling at me" she says to him why are you in my yard where my kids were apparently just sledding, hunting. He turns around and walks back into his prpoerty. After my wife and I figure out the best way to handle This I go to his house and his truck is there, lights on and he wont answer his door. I call and left a message have not heard back. We don't want probelms with them, but this is the last time I'm dealing with this guy about hunting. What I plan to do is talk with him and see if he agrees that this is the last time I want time hunting there. If he's not agreeable I'm calling the ECO. When I bought and built this house he called the town on me twice until my lawn was in because of straw washing down into his yard even though I raked it out both times, he called the town dog warden about wild cats in my barn when they trapped his cat in there. So, why I'm being this nice and not blowing him in I don't know. This is it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try to find at least 50 acres of land in the best location you can for hunting and whatever you want to do on it and buy it. However you do it buy it and don't look back. It will bring you a great peace and place to your family can call theirs. Look at aerial and tax maps to find the property. Many landowners would sell their land even though trhey don not have it listed. Try to find a parcel at a dead end of a road that is at the end of a large piece of woods. good luck

I have always wondered why everyone was so excited about the full moon for deer movement during the day. The "New Moon" is when I see most of my good deer movement. In a full moon deer can see as if its 12 noon. In a "new moon" its dark and I see more deer movement during the day. This past week was a great example. I know what the experts say, but its doesn't make sence and does not match what I see in the woods after 33 years of hunting deer....

We pass on does with fawns. Sometimes it hard to find one without, you end up taking it thinking it was alone and when you get up to it a fawn runs away. Sometimes it end up being a button buck, although if you have time you can usually pick them out from the does.

I don't think its ignorance to only hunt those high percentage days, but I must have been called that before... I do like to hunt funnels as much as possible. With work and family obligations I put off hunting until things heat up out there, even I could sit in a tree more i'd still rather hunt the high percentage times. I have killed good bucks on opening day and week and I will not miss a good front coming thru anytime of year. But the rut is still the "chase phase" in you must use the term and the rest is just early season and late season. I have seen second ruts and hunted them also. Anyway saw 9 different bucks today and one good shooter. We do not shoot small bucks and take our does. I wish I was in a funnels area, but I have to stay on the edge of a thicket and its kind of open. Maybe tomorrow I will get lucky.

I was complainning on here yesterday about the lack of deer movement in my area. Well today I had 9 different bucks around my stand. I may have seen one doe being chased unless it was a button buck that walked by being pushed out, but the rest were all bucks. One big 7 point I passed on and one good shooter that I could not get to close less than 50 yards. I will have to trudge my doe decoy in later and see if he shows up again. Finally the rut is starting and/or the bigger bucks are moving during shooting hours.

Sometimes I feel like I'm one of those guys who just sits in the same stand aimlessly. Lets look at it like driving a car. You have 3 phases to drive a car. Phase 1 you get in put your seat belt on and start the car. Phase 2 you actually drive the car. Phase 3 you shut the car off and get out. Now what phase is the one where your really driving the car only Phase 2... Now the rut the only phase where the bigger bucks are roaming during legal shooting hours is the chase phase. Do the others really matter to a hunter, I'd say not really. Who cares if they scrap at midnight except for trail cam pics ect. The scrapping does indicate you have bucks on your property, and again this is all good knowledge to have to understand the fall behavior. But the rut has been for decades when the bucks are chasing.
