bring a quad to get further in and away from people. then walk a few miles even more to start hunting. hunt with a crossbow during the rut (bow season).
-
NOT the one pictured, but mine.... i had a bright shining moment once. if anyone wants to see one with highway pavement road rash where the micro adjust knobs edges are ground down i can show you. it saved the bow and still didn't need to be re-sighted in. not touching any adjustments i obviously checked it still. it was good to go as i shot 3 X's on a vegas face competition target (size of your thumb nail) at 20 yards. Customer service is good. i've lost the bubble level out of the bracket and TRU Ball sent me a new one with a $0 invoice. No interrogative questions asked. I just got a "It'll be shipped soon", "God Bless", and "Good luck this season". Same thing when i lost the spring out of my TRU Ball Beast II release.

i don't need it as i have my own on my bow. their slogan for these sights is "built like a tank" and i'm telling you they are. no worries about it holding up to conditions you'd never intentionally put one through.

this year seemed like a really good year for antlers.

northeastern NY makes me bias but Remington 7600's work.

i've used topo maps from big woods to broken up ag ground. seems like a lot of good info already given. they work great on large pieces of public ground. deer are like hunters. they'd rather walk the path of least resistance. they can tell you were hunters won't likely go. also give you an idea of how thermals and terrain will factor into wind direction.

one thing i've gone to is a full helical on my vanes. seems to get tighter groups. Arizona archery that makes my EZ-fletch jig even discussed their testing and differences in drop compared to straight. i thought the tighter grouping out weighed a slight increase in drop due to added drag. ...that's with blazers. i buy them in bulk so i've never really ran out.

During the shootout spots and distances are made up on the fly by the guy who owns course. If nobody's missing a target the yardages get farther. Its a challenge with a lot of cursing and heckling happening. It's all in good fun though. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

My primary hunting bow has fixed pins to 50 yards. Others were using HHA or spot hog single pin slider sights assumed to be dialed in out to that far. I just couldn't hold over as accurate. I always have a backup hunting setup with an HHA that i also use for that league. As I said not exactly IBO rules like most shoots. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

That's what most people do. It's about the best practice you can get. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Small plot / maximum tonnage?
dbHunterNY replied to stubborn1VT's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
i'm thinking of planting some of the logging/access roads in spots i want the deer to move through. if it's limited sun i think i might go with a shade tolerant forage rye grass. a little more sun i might go with alfalfa. if there's at least 8 hours of sun i'll go with a clover, chickory, or mix. someone else i know has good luck with access roads and a type of chickory, both for grazing pressure and vehicle traffic. i'm sure George (SplitG2) on here could get you what you need. a lot of rye grass and alfalfa around so i'll more likely go with chickory if i can to provide variety. deer are particular. -
Yeah I get that. I like the smaller diameter ones better for cutting wind versus cutting scoring rings. Local league I'm in is bow hunting setups out to 80 or so yards. Only stretched that far for champ shoot-out at end with top 6 or so guys. Not your typical IBO rules. Lol Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Yeah you're right none have any healed injury or physical markings to tell them apart little bit like double throat patch, torn ear, etc. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

i've hit up random shoots throughout NY at times but can't really do a statewide league/championship.... only local ones. ellicottville where the IBO worlds have been is doing one i think i saw. there is a couple NY state championship series called "NYS 3D Archery Challenge"; one in western ny and one here in the east. just tried out Carbon Expess arrows last year and shooting them this year. Shooting the Maxima BLU Redzone arrows. Seem to work pretty good. got the setup down to 5 grains per lb and still shooting okay.

Predator Control Is A Must!
dbHunterNY replied to Rattler's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
coyotes are an important part of the ecosystem. they're the clean up crew after deer season. where we are there's plenty of food and cover for them to thrive if we let them. in the area we shoot doe for meat and to promote opportunity to make up for our restricted buck take. we have and like full freezers. we have the yote populations kept in check so we can co-exist and the fawns don't get hammered too bad. Curmudgeon's trail cam photo is one that'd be pretty common for most of us we just don't see it as much, despite it happens. we have groups that hunt with dogs and make our season work. each year each group gets around 30 coyotes in the general area once deer season ends and before the yote season ends. they like doing it so it's not really an expense. if they couldn't use dogs and hunters could just call them in, i'd worry. not nearly as effective then and i'd really like to see the season extended if that were to happen. -
Hunting Christmas presents. Whatcha get ?
dbHunterNY replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
i always get the the legendary clothing catalogs. never ordered anything from them though. for christmas between in-laws and extended family i got a bunch of smaller stuff.... Big Game Tree saw, HS hair/body soap, DDW field wipes and deodorant, cheaper thermal base layers, Shoot-N-C targets, wood ammo box, Princeton Vizz headlamp, Butt Out tool, Primos winter hat, and a couple other things i probably forgot. Field & Stream had remaining camo at 50% off right before christmas so i picked myself up some. i'd never ask for something that expensive. so now i have a set of Scentlok Cold Blooded parka and pants. -
i've pulled all my cameras. hopefully this weekend i can relocate them to areas where i believe particular bucks moved back in to. problem a small number of bucks have already shed. had one yearling shed on Dec 17th and a younger hunter took it thinking it was a doe. there's a handful of bucks i believe made it that are 3.5 or older.
-
i'd say both are 2.5 yrs old.

sounds like Tom's got it handled on the key things to get the deer through the winter the best way possible and keep the doe population the most productive it can be. that's all you can do really. the DEC system is quite a lagging one and always has them playing catch up to actual hunter field observations. I really hope they get the AVID citizen science stuff going and work on fine tuning it to have info on natural browse pressure. They should push the bowhunter log more too. hunters have to use a little common sense though. Just because you have a tag doesn't necessarily mean that's exactly how many deer should be taken. if you think there's barely any deer around it's probably not a good idea to shoot the baby makers. like wise if you and those in the area are seeing lots of deer but DEC says there's not much around, that doesn't mean what you saw must have been a dream.
-
...but do you report them to DECALS/DEC? That's a lot more important than filling the things out. If not so be it. cant change the past but you should start as soon as you read this. I assume you don't because you didn't even mention it. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Do you remove sling while actual hunting
dbHunterNY replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Hunting
same type of swivel that come with the slogan ultraflex slings. i even changed one set out to the ones i posted. haven't had a problem with them ever. they have a pretty stout spring in them. an incident like that though would definitely not sit well with me. -
people's hurt feelins'? .....na that can't be right. nevermind.

Do you remove sling while actual hunting
dbHunterNY replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Hunting
i leave my slings on indefinitely but do take them off for things like cleaning. all my slings have these.. https://outdoorconnection.com/?product=talon-swivels-with-toc-swivel-bases -
i think it's staying on topic but i've been meaning to brush up on my recurve skills by still hunting for squirrels. i think it'd provide a ton of opportunity once you let the woods settle problem is it's cold enough out to kill some interest.
