Nothing fancy today. Just had access to dads old deer rifle. Shoots true but 30-06 is a bit much for a chuck. Only one I saw today. Still not feeding as frequent. Evenings best right now but only had time mid day.

It blows my mind ARs are talked about so much and people have them so messed up. Can't compare big buck states with states with state mandated ARs. It's not comparing the same thing. ARs based on spread and/or points are meant to be a tool to protect certain younger age classes. If you want big bucks with ARs then make them based on scoring system inches of bone. I don't see states doing that so why do people continue to think mandated ARs are meant for inches of antler? Blows my mind.

have yet to see a porcupine in the wild. so no I don't shoot them. I've seen both fisher and pine marten. I know they eat turkey eggs but I've given them a pass. closest I've had a fisher is on my boot. actually took video of it. made me pretty nervous but I coaxed it in. wouldn't want a porcupine that close.

for those of you who want this to happen, please do what Culver's post above suggests. Contact Senator O'Mara! With such an overwhelming vote I can't imagine it not going through. As with any other promising legislation though, we don't want it to sit on someone's desk collecting dust. if we get it on the floor soon, it'll still be in time to take effect during this coming season.

what we're talking about is raising fines enough to make most poachers think twice. i'll play devils advocate.... how about the angle that DEC ECO's and judges have only so much time to deal with law breakers. higher fines and jail time can and will make the less bold poachers that are the majority take a step back and rethink committing the crime. you could then imagine judges and ECOs will have less of these potential cases to investigate or review and can then focus efforts elsewhere. not to mention you're eliminating more potential tense situations of someone, who's breaking the law and happens to be armed, being confronted by an ECO. an argument could then be made that it's making the ECO's safer. I think we'd be talking about local judges and votes very much matter to them. in local elections it can come often come down a few dozen votes to determine who's elected. not like state wide elections when a "concern" is know. also higher the penalty the higher the penalty the final plee ends up being. a lot of final penalty has to do with court fines, surcharges, and how it effects who gets what money. it'll now end in more money coming back to the people, whether it be state, county, and/or town. no magic pill needed. just progress and a step forward. war on poaching still exists but this is a major battle that we're winning.

yea for something so simple as a trad bow shot off the shelf there's a lot involved. -
Mountain Muffler Recurve Strings

I use D97 Flemish twist strings. wrap the ends that contact the string in wool yarn and then make 2 wool puff balls fed between the twists. once puff them out by shooting with them I take scissors and cut them down for more fps and so they don't retain more precipitation. looks nice when I use Ombre colored yarn to match the bow. still I've thought about just going to string leeches that aren't as quiet or look as nice. i'll have to give those strings a try when it's time for new ones. -
maybe so but an extra year (or more if they shoot more than one deer) of imprisonment not so much. if it happens and they get caught under that circumstance why not put the screws to them a little deeper. I'm sure you agree.

Deer poaching legislation that increases penalties for poaching deer is making some progress. Amendments had to be made to first get it through, but it was voted on and passed through the Assembly uncontested. Not a single 'Nay' vote! Lots of momentum now going into the senate. Several hundred if not thousands of $ to illegally shoot a deer and possible imprisonment. Also it got rid of the wording "wild deer", so if you shoot a pet deer behind someone's fence, there's a possibility this might kick in too but not completely sure. Definitely will make a difference. Before the penalties were practically nothing with no incentive for a poacher to change his/her ways. Areas hit hard by it is most likely same people being repeat offenders. Lots of incentive not to be that way now. https://www.qdma.com/news/qdma-supports-new-york-bills-to-increase-poaching-penalties http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?default_fld=&leg_video=&bn=A07171&term=2015&Summary=Y&Text=Y

I think it's good that DEC promotes letting yearling bucks go now. Some areas really need it. Definitely think the term trophy has been skewed in a bad way.
-
definitely an opinion. hopefully you can get some small piece out of it that works uniquely for you and your setup.

nice pictures. I've only managed to get out twice. first time was too early in the year with not much out yet. didn't see anything. second time out I managed to get a handful. more out there I never got a chance to pull the trigger at. l like bubble level ring you've got on your scope. I've thought about getting one. probably definitely helps with the 17HMR. seems like our area has an abundance of chucks with all the hilly terrain and broken up fields. keep at it!

...i'll add that to fine tune pin glare black electrical tape with the end folded under to easily grab works good to fine tune brighteness. you cover up portion of the pin guard to block light to the fiber wrap.

Spot Hoggs are nice sights. I think they used to have stainless bolts and screws which is a plus. those are the first thing to rust on any bow or accessory. micro adjust for long range is great and will save you lots of time and headache getting dialed in. it's got wrapped fiber and provisions to install a light so for long range, unless your eyes aren't the best I'd go with .010" fiber pins versus 0.019" as they take up a lot of the target especially with pin glare. if you hunt a lot out of blinds and question your vision then go with .019". my only real critical points are 7 pins are a lot and it doesn't have 2nd & 3rd axis adjustments. the additional adjustments are available in the Hunter model that's the next up from the one you're looking at. when shooting up or down hill or out of a treestand it makes that bubble valid. otherwise it'll be off and you have to ignore it, as it'll throw you off. I use a single pin for competition but I'm a firm believer in fixed pins for hunting setups. that said I've used lots of pins before and now I don't. shooting long range you want lots of light and a solid anchor that doesn't change, so I use a larger peep centered just around the pin guard and don't center the pin in the peep. otherwise your anchor changes especially with more pins and distance. depends on speed you're getting but usually with 7 pins you've got a small gap between the top pin and the pin guard. for out west with longer hunting shots you're mostly not using the top pin so seeing more of the animal isn't an issue. around here most shots are top pin close. so you've got the animal now covered up mostly by the pin guard. I'd go with the 5 pin at most. set your top pin more centered in the pin guard. lets you get on the animal faster and just see what's going on, whether it be the game or something in the way of your arrow. set each pin then the bottom gets pushed as far down as it'll go for practicing at furthest distance you can get out of your sight setup. this might mean you've got 20, 30, 40, 50, and 75+ yard pins.

customer service is good and otherwise still no complaints.
-
if your string isn't black take a sharpie marker and mark it. you'll know if your peep has moved at all. it happens. they make new arrows every day, just don't make it a habit. could be expensive.

I tend to prefer the sectioned ones versus ones that connect all together. I good tree with lots of limbs and cover is easier to use with sectioned sticks. I have and use both though. almost always get extra as one set usually doesn't go high enough to step down onto a treestand platform at a height I prefer.

now that I look at the picture loaded and blown up based on the head and tail feathers it's definitely a bearded hen. maybe it wasn't in actual full strut but just fluffed a bit? the rest of my previous post stands though. he verified the beard. excitement at times causes minor mistakes to happen but he still did enough to be safe and lawful.
-
he comfirmed it had a beard, therefore it was legal. wasn't quite what he thought but there's really no concern for safety or breaking the law. anyone else notice that he seemed to say that the bird was puffed and strutting. I've come across a few bearded hens to this day. one's a boss hen still walking the family farm as far as I know. I've never seen them strut.... to my knowledge it's something not even a bearded hen would do. maybe I'm wrong. also I've come across many jakes that have barely noticeable nubs that are the start of actual spurs. I'm not convinced he didn't shoot a jake.

anything I've got has been mounted or stolen. friend just became a scorer and he attended a similar event to do so. i'll still look and send you something if I can.
-
higher poundage setups i stick with the rubber bludgeon heads and then lower poundage i go with the judo heads. if you intend to eat what you're shooting.
-
I've used the fancier small game heads by Easton and G5. also have used rubber bludgeon tips that are loud and don't seem to be effective with grazing blows on things like squirrels. by far the original Judo heads work the best. grabs critters with the spring ends and the take abuse. http://www.lancasterarchery.com/zwickey-judo-unloseable-miracle-point-screw-in.html others I've used are the vista small game adder points. basically a wash with teeth that goes ahead of your field tip. problem is they're about 25 gr so you're probably wanting to get different weight field points then you normally use. Muzzy heads aren't bad but along with these vista points you usually get too much penetration.

congrats! sounds like your season is rolling along well for your group.

jake still makes tasty fried turkey nuggets. Congrats!
