a little different big woods hunt this coming fall
dbHunterNY replied to hunterintheshadows's topic in Big Woods Hunting
usually how it works. -
I can get this Sig Elite Scorpion and then you can pick out any one you want. We can shoot together. ...i'll add this took place in the gun shop and my suburban, doesn't like guns, mother in-law was with us. she picked one out said try not to spend too much and then they left. it worked and I'm still married with a mother in-law who likes me.

4x at 400 yards and even a little less makes for a pretty small target to hold the cross hairs on. also unless it's a real good scope a 24mm objective turn up to 4x won't pull in as much light. most all my guns have 3-9x 30 or 40mm scopes on them. I do most of my hunting in the woods too. I would at least go with a 1-6 x 30mm and wouldn't be shooting that far. aim small miss small. if you're just trying to keep the cross hairs on the tiny image of the deer you're not aiming small.

believe me when I say an expanded jacket of a bullet can cut. comparing the hunting implements wasn't really the point though. My point was it's capable to ethically hunt deer and successfully. you've just got to use it within its limitations. Deer ethically die from 22-250 rifles every year. Sure bigger will kill easier, but last I knew your common gun hunter doesn't exactly look into his gun cabinet to debate going out to hunt deer with a 458Lott, 500 Nitro, or 505 Gibbs.

we've had a small basket racked 7 pointer that to some would be considered an 8 pt that was 100% without doubt a 1.5 yr old. have had many 6 pointers that were also 1.5 years old. loads of bucks with less points. some speak of mythical advise that a buck grows 2 point per year of age but that's just not true. body characteristics is the best way. chances are if the spread of it's rack is well within its ears then it's a good possibility it's a 1.5 yr old, but absolutely antlers is not a sure way to judge. no matter the age class, if judging a buck in the field is the intent, all physical characteristics should be considered.

awesome.... just think of all that loot that's now in your pocket or going to something else that's really worth it. crazy. got a co-worker that spends $900 a month on that crap.

a bit harder muddy results when you see the raw findings. I agree though by the time I make it to the DEC report it'll probably won't make much of any sense with the results I've read. I'd copy the text but it's all protected... "We used the entire statewide data set and did not weight the data. Note that the number of respondents used in the discriminant analysis (n=1792) is less than the total number of respondents because the analysis only included those respondents who answered all of the questions used in it. There were also respondents who indicated that they were "unsure" on whether they thought yearling bucks should receive further protection (Question 14) and these were omitted from the analysis. ....." effort made definitely muddied things from the start.

Going to be all High Fence.
dbHunterNY replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in General Chit Chat
i thought I saw somewhere that some random person got sick and died. testing revealed some connection to the plague. nothings become of it though. if the plague takes hold enough to be that much of a concern the last thing I'm going to be worrying about is booking a high fence hunt. also if that was the case your fence isn't going to do crap. the way the plague works your deer confined together in a small space would be screwed more than the free ranging ones. what the frig kind of koolaid are you drinking now?? -

5 Ways To Get More Out Of Your Trail Cameras
dbHunterNY replied to AdirondackBH's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
i try to access my trail cameras same way i access my stands but most likely at a different time. i don't just walk right in during odd hours like noon. if i access it from an atv and never put boots on the ground. deer still don't like it but are more accustomed to ATV traffic then foot traffic. i don't have an electric means of transportation. wireless cams are preferred but not as common. -
5 Ways To Get More Out Of Your Trail Cameras
dbHunterNY replied to AdirondackBH's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
aside from the good advice Phade typed above. I'd say many people don't even get orientation right to prevent overexposure, glare, or just poor pictures from the sun and at times blame it on the camera. -
shoot me down too but i think all the slams being dished out for being "more of a challenge" aren't really warranted. it's no different than me using a bow during late season when i could use a muzzleloader. similarly a 30-30 like a 22-250 limits you to a similar range for different reasons but basically has the same amount of energy. 22-250 is more than capable. i think where things are getting lost is using it well within it's limitations to respect the game you're shooting. the "challenge" is you've got to wait for a broadside shot that's much closer and shoot it with the proper projectile. you can't just take a shot at any angle to the vitals, from any range you're capable at.

i don't get the outdoor news but I skimmed through some of the reports. read pretty much the intial data results/report from Cornell which isn't easy reading if you're not up on statistics. didn't really yet read the other two reports; DEC buck management report (by kelly and hurst) and the report from Cornell's Human Dimensions Research Unit. the data based results I've read so far were mixed. basically almost half were accepting of buck take restrictions and would pass on (protect) younger bucks to have a chance at shooting a bigger deer which they would like. a good portion doesn't support restrictions and supports freedom of choice regardless of age or size. then a substantial portion somehow supports freedom of choice regardless of age and size but is willing to pass on younger bucks thinking they should be protected. my guess is these people believe in choice but most within their group don't harvest younger bucks (1.5 yr olds) anyway or some similar situation. the conclusion so far that i've got is a majority of NY hunters believe we should be protecting 1.5 yr old young bucks but a majority are either on the fence or don't support state restrictions for protection. seems a little silly but various deeper reasoning may have driven answer to the surveys. i don't really have actual survey questions. DEC sat on this for a while and would probably still be. it's only available now due to a FOIL request being filed. moral of the story save 1.5 yr old bucks for first time hunters or your pops who doesn't have many seasons of hunting left and go after relatively older bucks. DEC doesn't have to worry about restrictions that make some feel all bent over and can instead focus more on better monitoring and control of population. then add the other critters and stuff they deal with.

First corn plots
dbHunterNY replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
first time in several years I've soybeans instead of corn in the 10 acre field behind the house. at my parent's farm its all still alfalfa, timothy, and broome hay grounds. lost the cows so separate portions of 5+ acre each of flat pasture throughout the farm have gotten forage rye grass planted. weeds where coming in so they got mowed. rye grass should start to do much better. -
not worried so much with spooking game but the different angles possible from being up higher in the tree really help get good pictures from the start to judge deer. i don't like screw in stuff much anymore. messes with a good tree or forgotten and grown in. if it's a "junk" tree like white pine then you get pine pitch all over everything. i guess that's why i still use straps.

started plants early and then got busy and they took a back seat to everything else. they're a little behind schedule.

your branch had a field day in the works. a few of us from eastern ny were thinking about making a roadtrip.

It's end of June...holding back your bucks?
dbHunterNY replied to phade's topic in Trail Camera Pictures
don't have cams out yet. little ones seen so far. -
I agree that many 22-250 bullets will fragment and whatever meat each piece touches will be bloodshot or just no good. all I shoot in my 223 is 60gr Vmax loads they are an accurate bullet and they do expand like crazy. I've opened up a chucks skull at over 300 yards multiple times. last shot like that was at 312. I wasn't talking about accuracy though but energy required to make the neck shot work. a 22-250 at 200 yards has about 100 ft-lb less than half the energy of a 130gr 270. a neck shot relies on a sturdy enough bullet that will penetrate through that dense neck and close enough to the spine to dissipate much of that energy to work. I also cut up my own deer from the beginning. i'll lose more meat shooting the deer in the neck than I will using a sturdy bullet through the rib cage. a buddy of mine shot a 210 lb buck last year. he got something like 17 lbs of neck roast from it. he couldn't have boned out several sections of ribs and get that. Fusion and Nolser Partitions do the job among others. Feel free to be a pioneer but my experience tells me it's not something I'd want to try. my uncle has taken the biggest buck on my parents farm. he did with a 22-250 at probably around 100 or so yards. watched it run around in the woods for just over 2 hours before he finally got a good opportunity to put one right in its pump station. the buck didn't go more than 30 or 40 yards. I think he used a 64gr Winchester bullet.

fishing with kayaks is definitely the way to go. you can ease into spots real slow that you couldn't get to with other boats. in the fall sometimes you get pockets opened up deep into weed beds. saves casting into the pocket and reeling through the weeds each time. then I've fished a lot of points that are too shallow for anything big. fish the ledges on the point and it gives the look like your bait is trying to head or stay into the shallow side versus unnaturally swimming out into the deep.

Xpedition bows and Obsession bows are basically the same bow with different looks.

are you saying that he should not hit the deer in the vitals with the 22-250 but instead hit the deer in the neck????? if that's the case that's the horrible advise. I'd under a heavier caliber and shock puts them down and the rest of the idea of hitting them in the neck. I've ever done it on multiple occasions. most definitely not the placement for a smaller bullet like a 22-250. aim for the lungs and if possible the heart. keep shots under 200 yards, even 100 yards if possible. myself or anyone I know of who use a 22-250 to hunt deer with would not take a neck shot, especially at 200 yards. I hope I misunderstood you. all the ammo mfg make something like a softpoint or bonded lead.

no I don't. in all honesty the one buck in a bottle doesn't sell me. I don't really use scents that often anyway. in the last decade I've actually only used some to start mock scrapes and that's about it. the 1 deer 1 bottle doesn't even matter at that point as their will be scent from multiple deer there anyway.
-
I don't see why it wouldn't work other than a little guy knowing it came from maybe a likely bigger buck than him, like Buckstopshere said. if it can even work that way. I've never seen a deer work or visit a scrape and not touch the overhanging branch. if I were a deer and discovered scent on the ground but nothing on the branch I'd seem odd. I've seen activity drop completely off both real and mock scrapes after the branch has been broke on the ground or unreachable from use.

how do you get matching swimmers in a straw? ...we don't need to know the process and simply accept it. couldn't help but comment sorry. lol
