they didn't have black so I got white. why the preference?

for all you Dexter Russell and Victorinox Fiborux handle users.... I preferred the Victorinox stuff but couldn't find it as easily. Due to Cabelas points and availability, I ended up getting two Dexter Russell white Softgrip knives; one 6" flexible boning and one 6" narrow semi-stiff boning. Black handles weren't in stock. Any reason for preferring the black handles versus white? I think Early and maybe someone else mentioned a preference.

you're kind right but hey if you're using the knife on the deer lets hear about it. I'd get one if I didn't already have many that serve the same function.

nice... yea I'm sure the pic doesn't do it justice. high carbon tool steel should allow for a nice edge and that blade profile I think is the way to go for a dedicated skinning knife.

I feel pretty much the same way. Congrats on the deal! ADLs are hit and miss but I've know of some to shoot really well with factory ammo too and not just working up a hand load tailored to the gun. cousin's son just took his first buck with a 243 bolt gun.

scentblocker or underamour cold gear gloves (pretty much the same thing) for mild to cold weather 75% of the time. once temps get freezing and colder I have thinsulate mittens that have a fingers cover that folds back over to expose your fingers and let you have more dexterity.

the outdoor channel show "Rapid Fire" is good to watch... it seems I watch that any time I see it on.

never attended a machine gun type of shoot or fired something like a 50 bmg sniper rifle. I'm sure it's a heck of a time. I can't imagine shooting a pod mounted "mini-gun" (first gun in the video). it's a shame some think you'd be a lunatic for wanting to attend something like this. I bet even a person not into guns could go and enjoy themselves. just learning history associated with each gun, the experience, and see them in action has to be appreciated.

I agree with this regarding the Corelokt bullets. My experience is with a 30-06 and other standard calibers mentioned including the 270. Only magnum I have first hand experience with is a 300 win mag. Different bullets are shot out of that though. out of a 30-06 you can still punch through lower shoulder bones on both sides within reasonable hunting ranges using a 150 gr corelokt. I've done it although I highly don't recommend it, due to both shoulders being blown up with bone fragments and blood clotting, depite the short tracking job you'd have. i think two holes are better than two for tracking. that said I still think it's hard to argue the "more energy dissipated in deer" theory, it's just plain physics.

rutting activity doesn't change year to year much at all I think. areas with higher buck to doe ratios will just witness more activity compared to those with fewer bucks and lots of doe. if many older or younger doe are taken in large numbers in an area you might see an isolated difference too.

I've had a normal season. I'm hearing that it's been bad and numbers are down from a lot of people though.

this makes sense otherwise they'd be told to go pound salt (or politely setup communication regarding what the issue is). Even then I think the school would be contacted about the issue first. In my field of engineering, people make up regulations and codes all the time who claim to be the authority. we have ways of politely asking them where there thoughts are coming from. most of the time they can't answer that or send proper correspondence stating where it came from because it's not correct and then the situation just goes away like it never happened.

I assume this whole thing took place in the AM. it's a very admirable thing showing up well before daylight. shows dedication. that said I don't know as if probably had any choice. they may have showed up that early to find it before day light to help out anyone, as in you, hunting. they aren't and shouldn't have turned around and waited until you left. maybe they apologized for the situation, but I don't know. I wasn't there. how are they to know where in those woods you even are? there's public land I hunt where I have to park in a certain spot but I hike about a mile in. that's just outside a rural area too. they have an obligation as the others have said to find that deer promptly. it's unfortunate your paths crossed but you'll get that hunting public land, guaranteed. that said I think they didn't need to hoot and holler.. couldn't celebrated a bit quitter. i'm only assuming it was that rowdy based on what you said though. I've had other hunters post up during gun season in a rifle zone within 60 yards of me in the woods and hunt all morning. I flashed my light at them too. I went over late morning when we were heading out and just talked with the guy. asked him if he saw what I saw, was nice, told him where my stand was that I often hunted that time of the season, and we went our separate ways. can't imagine how (as some say on here) how butt hurt you'd be if that happened. bottom line is someone's freedoms starts where another's ends. we've got to live together.

years ago someone found a deer carcass up in a tree. just this year supposedly people saw one dead in the road on route 7 around here early one morning. a nurse I know took a picture of it but it wasn't the best as she drove by. my wife and I saw something odd one night as it was going over the backside of a guard rail. it was black though.. not a mountain lion. there were thoughts that a small zoo not doing the best around here may have "lost" one of their cats. nothing solid though and I've never seen one. i'd say there's a 99% chance they aren't here. if one got lost it'd die of old age from not finding a companion. lol

yes to both. many don't know that your regular season buck only tag can be used to take a either sex during late season.

I always assumed you had to buy a muzzleloader privilege to hunt with one at all. I think cdmckane could very well be right. you can hunt with a bow during the regular season without buying the bow privilege. you just need proof of your bowhunter certificate. muzzleloader ceritification is lumped in with your regular hunter safety. so it makes sense you would only need to buy a big game license to hunt with one only during regular season.

past few years I've ended up going into the late season with an empty freezer and then filling tags. in the same boat this year.

I hunt down wind of bedding areas but mainly fields they're feeding at. bucks are on the move back to where they'll hunker down and feed to prep for winter. the occational one you might spot but chances are he's just passing through. don't keep hunting that one spot waiting for him to show, unless you've got cam pics saying he is frequenting that spot or there's does feeding there on a regular basis. does are cautious but if you play the wind right you'll be fine. in late season when the deer are out feeding in fields many times they'll look up a lot more, from the stress of being hunted all season. if they stare at you don't right it off as being busted. don't move and wait them or it out. I had 7 doe staring at me just sunday night within 40 yards, some within 20. after a little while they went back to eating. shoot your bow before you go out in the afternoon with all your gear on and wear an arm sleeve or guard. you'll be bundled up much more making handling your bow a little more cumbersome. I like and hate the late season. I like it because everybody's out of the woods but hate that it's so dang cold.

any good processing knives that my dad had from his store have been sharpened so much they're spent. can't even read any markings anymore. the commercial Hobart grinder is still going strong which is another reason I've got to upgrade knives. tough keeping them sharp to feed that thing and can't leave it on with meat going through it to keep everything lubricated.

I was cutting up deer before I was old enough to shoot one. I've helped and gotten help from various people everyone swears on their hunting knife. most of the time we use what's in our hands but after 20 years or so I've figured that yea it'd make life a whole lot easier with just a sharpener, boning knife, and bigger knife for single straight cuts using the whole blade and weight of the knife. right now I'm hurtin for a boning knife though above all else. Cabelas has got victorinox, dexter Russell, and some others. wondering if I should go with dexter Russell cheap or step up to something more expensive that may hold an edge longer. cabelas also sells Zwilling JA Henkels knives. touching up a blade is the norm. I just don't want to be required to do it every 30 seconds. I've noticed a knife dulls a lot quicker cutting up a cow vs a deer too. when we've done those, seems like one guy is just sittin there sharpening knives while others cut.

So I process my own deer. always have and will. just wondering what knives you all use and are happy with for the different tasks. I've got a lot but after years of doing I've decided I really need a good flexible boning knife. so what do you use? thought about dexter Russell because I can get them through cabelas and also thought about victorinox. I've got a couple good purpose built skinning knives. one's a Gerber Myth Series.

I think contests like TeeBugg and I are in are ok. it's not really about the contest and prize anyway. it gets you a tank of gas worth of cash and that's about it for ours. I'm with the others in that if it was different, higher stakes, or with strangers I probably wouldn't be in it. I'm in a team contest in another forum but it's more to share stories of your season and talk with others. you really don't win anything for that one either.

that one's sweet... law breaker if you shoot from it but sweet. I initially thought it was about the expensive manufactured Redneck blinds. they're a tad expensive. wish I had one though.
