  1. how'd this thread turn onto a zombie deer thread. I think a bunch of you must have A.D.D. go with the 308.
  2. I wish there was an Elite dealer closer by me. It'd be nice to try one out. the new Energy 35 seems like a great bow.
  3. Muck boots awesome. If something happens to them it's a freak occurrence.
  4. anywhere but Rensselaer county. hunters here only shoot little bucks.
  5. looks like a great shot... congrats on the buck!
  6. Ruth infected you with the bug... now you need to trade in that Hoyt and get one.
  7. they won't care about apples as much. apples are high sugar but that's it. not a high energy food source like corn. they'll hit them as they browse by but won't stay long or eat much at all. they hit those more between sept - early November. we're pushing towards December now. Corn, turnips, and cereal grains are going to be hit pretty hard now.
  8. damn Midwestern deer again. seems to be the end of the trail for almost every monster buck allegedly taken in NY.
  9. it's got comparable size... absolute giant that makes me wonder why the heck we can't have an average rack size here of more then 100". that deer is just ridiculous. seeing milo hanson's and other bucks mounted that are freakishly huge is one thing but to see a live trail cam picture is another. all that said and looking at the photo though it'd be tough. it's overall size is comparable but milo hanson's buck has barely any deductions. there's small stickers all over that thing. i'm sure people know about this deer in the area it lives. however, I still wouldn't give up any info about it until I shot it. the guys I know that kill big bucks consistently don't say a word until they harvest them.
  10. I think that it maybe more of a determination of him being an aggressive dominant buck if he made it to a certain age of say 3.5 to 4.5 years old. the older and bigger racked buck isn't always the one running all other bucks off. on another note the only snort wheeze I've heard in the wild is from a spike horn that had 3" spikes on either side. I got him so worked up when he was chasing a doe he was doing to same as you said. I snort wheezed at him to try and run him off but he just did it back at me. I think he mustered up the guts to do it because it was me in a stand and not some real life older, bigger, buck coming to straighten his butt out by putting a whoopin on him.
  11. I have noticed a decrease in doe numbers and on my dad's farm doe harvest is strictly controlled to a minimum. any doe taken are based on fawn sightings and number of bucks taken or known to be lost in rare circumstances. numbers are still ok but I think if they backed off on handing so many DMPs out and changed to 1 buck per year rule i'd say we'll be looking good. to build numbers back up quickly. I don't think any of this is any real problem at all. However, the problem I think we've got is the data DEC uses to decide how many DMPs to hand out. Our system is based heavily on the honor system. sure people tag their deer but I have a bad feeling that not nearly as many report their harvest.
  12. my understanding is the same as the others. it's illegal to buy or sell wild game meat of any kind, and not just in NY. it's all farm raised venison. When I lived out in Buffalo I remember Wegman's even had a very small meat section for farm raised game meat. they had buffalo and other stuff. venison was like $28/lb! probably city folk who are rich and don't hunt would buy it I guess. My primary care physician eats it at some restaurant she goes to and loves it. I think she pays like $80 per plate.
  13. only bad experiences I've heard of were with Case and Challenger. If you go to any of the overseas grey market tractors make sure you compare them all in person. some have a pretty small dinky rear-end for transmission.
  14. dad just picked up a lightly used 2wd one. it's not a bad tractor at all and good on fuel.
  15. I watched a guy on TV drop a buck in it's tracks with a pellet gun. it was a big thing called a Rogue 357 I think. Crazy the pellet guns they've got these days.
  16. here's the problem I have... I've hunted the family farm and all throughout NY. It's completely different in areas even within the same WMU. I think this is why management of a deer herd and restrictions are such a touchy subject. for example, all the data that was just post and quoted by DEC is wrong for a 1000+ acre area where my parent's farm is. with the exception of the healthy herd part. I'm in agreement that you just can't pass a laws every time to force a hunter to do something. I don't want that. Around here though the mentality of hunters lends the deer population to be treated as an expoited resource. also DEC collected data isn't the primary means to end compared to certain groups having a say and politics that goes along with it. DEC data is somewhat works at best. I'd bet money it's not more than 75% accurate. most of it's based on the honor system. I've hunted other areas in the country where you have to report/check in your harvested deer to get a carcass tag. more I think about it the more I don't want DEC to make any rules on restrictions or any else until I get a questionnaire in the mail or have a ECO or biologist with boots on the ground talking to me and others who hunt my area, not just the WMU.
  17. the tree caving in ones head comment pulled back a memory. I was in stand and had a big white birch fall within probably 5' of my treestand whole tree went flying right past me and hit the ground. wasn't a fun time.
  18. several dozen in 4 years?.... you ain't kidding. that's a lot of shooting, mishaps, and breaks from critters.
  19. I believe it... with practice you can hold it at the right angle. many I know that do it use fingers or thumbs against and along the stone or rod as technically a guide. not sure if you do anything like that or not.
  20. it depends on what i'm going for... I've marinated using Lupos, Salamidas, I've made my own of a seasoned hint of orange citrus favor, I made a sweet heat type of marinade, and I've made some more smokey bbq flavor. tell me what type of favor you think you might be into and I could type something up. all my backstrap steaks are cut at least 1" thick and all as close to the same thickness as possible. the rest is put together to flash fry for things like fajitas. like lawdwaz said cook them on high heat. if you pull them off at medium rare and set them on a plate to sit they'll continue cooking from the residual heat a tad more to medium. like Early said the taste of venison itself is very good. if you don't cook it more than medium it will keep that favor, not turning game-ish, and it'll also enhance the favor of the marinade too. I was tortured for a long time eating overcooked tough venison cooked in season salt and lots of butter growing up. couldn't believe what I was missing. leftovers reheated only exist for ground venison. not even roast.
  21. not saying he's wrong but I've had the best results with a solid rest holding it at the forend and grip as you would shooting it in the field. that has applied to heavy varmint rifles, bolt action rifles mag or otherwise, semi-autos rifles, lever actions, shotguns, and muzzleloaders all that I've had. I did see someone do last Friday at the range with a lever gun though. claimed he was having trouble and needed to shoot that way. idk
  22. I hand wash all mine and dry them if it's a fixed blade. otherwise folders get blown out and dried then left high up on the window sill open in the sun light to dry completely. hand sharpening is good if you've got some practice and a guide of some kind. otherwise I use a fixed ceramic "v" with honing solution or soapy water. don't have them but heard lots of good things about havilon knives.
  23. well the earn a buck comment went over well... lol specific restrictions don't and shouldn't be for the whole state. that 40% can be different than the rest. there's ARs and restrictions on taking doe right now that vary across the state. it's because WMUs don't have the same deer populations and therefore need to be managed differently. I shouldn't have typed my previous post like it was a blanket statement that would work every where. if you saw a buck of a lifetime before you shot a doe... well tough. suck it up. if you haven't seen a deer you wanted to take on the other side of a Posted sign, at last light to late to shoot, out of season, after you've filled your tag, etc. then you haven't hunted enough. stuff like that will happen in life. FYI I hope you don't take these remarks personal.
