  1. i guess there's another thread somewhere too but this is the one i started.... http://huntingny.com/forums/topic/14967-feb-28th-rally-in-albany/ i'm going along with a bus from a local rod and gun club. then others i know are going too. there's several bus loads coming from up north i'm told along with some from western ny.
  2. i have no doubts savage will come out with a completely new rifle and have it be a dud. accurate rimfire and varmint rifles are their wheel house. right now i'm contemplating if i should just go with a Savage 17hmr or wait for this new rifle. 17hmr doesn't have a whole lot of killing power out past 150 yards. with any wind it'd be a good shot to focus on head of a big woodchuck over 150 yds. comparing cases this 17WSM should bark a little bit louder than the 17hmr but may still be quiet enough. it's loaded to a high pressure but still at least half as loud as a 223 Rem CF i'd think.
  3. wood stocks get scratched and beat up but look and feel better than many (cheap) synthetic stocks. people say there's a difference in recoil but i'll be damned i haven't figured it out yet. there's a lot of good rifles out there with nice triggers, that shoot well. I've got a Browning Abolt II in 30-06 and it handles like an extension of me but picky when it comes to ammo. I've shot lots of both and never had a failure from a Rem 700 or Win 70. weatherby vangard II's are nice too, TC ventures and Tikka's feel cheaper but know to be shooters. Same with Savage and I love the accu-trigger too. If i was to buy another bolt action rifle it'd have an aluminum bedding block stock, nice trigger around 3lbs, and a 60 degree/short throw bolt. for shotguns I like to stick to pumps - the Browning BPS is completely ambidextrous, Rem 870 is very popular and dependable, Benelli Supernova's (w/ comforTech stock) are light yet don't pound you with recoil and mine seems to take whatever i throw at it. my mossberg 500 i don't like nearly as much as the others but it works and was cheap, but all the above are affordable and dependable being pumps.
  4. https://www.nysrpa.o...=881&Itemid=196 ....it has changed to start at 12 noon i guess but i'd get there sooner than later. Guest speaker is NRA President Dave Keene.
  5. Feb 28th Rally in Albany... Anybody going? I am and others I know are too. This is going to be one to attend and should be pretty big. More info below.... The New York State Conservation Council urges your participation in the Gun Rights Rally and Lobby Day to be held in the Well of the Legislative Office Building in Albany on Thursday, February 28, 2013, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The theme of the Rally is "The NY SAFE Act Must Go!!" Organized by the NYS Rifle & Pistol Association with cooperation from the Shooters Committee On Political Education, this is an opportunity for you to join with other sportsmen/women to let Governor Cuomo and state legislators know of your strong opposition to the recently-passed NY Secure Ammunition and Firearms Act. If you are gun owner, you need to be in Albany on February 28. According to SCOPE, "We are being called to Albany on February 28th to make our voices heard as one united coalition. The Governor's SAFE Act does nothing to keep anyone safe. It does put onerous and restrictive regulations on law abiding, tax paying citizens [who] are being singled out by a small minority with an agenda that can only be labeled as dubious." The NYSR&PA says this is a day to lobby the state legislature on gun rights. It recommends that you call your Assembly Member and State Senator to make an appointment to meet with them in their offices on the 28th after the conclusion of the Rally at 12:30 p.m. Go to the home pages for the NYS legislature, www.nysenate.gov and http://assembly.state.ny.us, where you can find your legislators by entering your home address and/or zip code. It would be a good idea to make an appointment with a legislator who is not from your home district … deliver your message to the downstate/ metropolitan legislators as well. The February issue of NYSCC's Grass Roots News contained several articles concerning the gun control issue that can serve as reference for talking points; be sure to refer to the newsletter for ideas. Don't forget the ladies and youth! Bring them along if you can; show the legislators that there's more to this issue than a bunch of hunters in jeans and flannel shirts. Youngsters and women like to shoot, too – it's a family pastime enjoyed by many! There are several public and private transportation options to get to Albany: Several groups are putting together buses to Albany: From Long Island: the Sportsmen's Association for Firearms Education, contact John Cushman 631/475-8125 From Ulster County: the Federated Sportsmen's Clubs of Ulster County, contact Elmer LeSuer 845/340-7404 From Erie County: the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs, contact Rich Davenport 716/510-7952 From Utica/Mohawk Valley: contact Peg Roberts 315/941-6360 From Central NY: the Oswego and Onondaga County Sportsmen's Federations, contact Rick McDermott 315/882-1540 Check www.nysrpa.org and www.scopeny.org for additional areas that may be chartering buses for the trip to Albany. Amtrak to Albany: Take the train to the Albany-Rensselaer (ALB) station. From there either take a private taxi or CDTA bus to the Empire State Plaza. Driving to Albany: Parking is available under the Empire State Plaza. Cost is $2/hour and paid with a credit card. To get to the ESP take 1-787 to the South Mall Arterial exit. After parking take the elevator to the concourse level. The Legislative Office Building is accessible from there. Food and restrooms are available on the concourse level as well. Remember to check your pockets before your lock your car and leave behind anything that might be construed to be a weapon; you will be asked to dispose of pocket knives, tools, scissors, etc. as you pass through security. Be respectful with your message and your attire; wear business casual dress; no camo. A neat shirt and slacks, with or without a jacket, will send the message that you should be taken seriously. Once again, if you have any trouble with the links, just copy/paste them into your browsers address bar.
  6. sooo... i think it's a great thing that manufacturers are sticking up for civilians' rights.
  7. definitely carbon. they do make wooden printed on finish for carbon arrows. it takes some practice. after the first shots it's easy to be hitting on target, but you have to hit dead on with the first shot while bowhunting.
  8. the secretary was surprised because they're in a separate world down there in NYC. also, yea i looked into the cost a little bit too and it'll most likely cost a lot. many may not be able to afford it. also, insurance is too subjective with something not established like this. not so much worried about this being passed as much as making sure it does not go unnoticed. can't have it slip through like the SAFE ACT.
  9. Anyone have any experience or first hand thoughts they'd like to share regarding these two pistols (below)? Just curious because I most likely got them coming. Beretta PX4 Storm Compact 9mm (for wife) Sig Sauer P226 Elite Scorpion 9mm (for me)
  10. NYS Assemblyman Felix Ortiz from Brooklyn thinks everyone with a gun should be forced to have a $1,000,000 liability insurance policy. Feel free to let his office know what you think about that.... 404 55th Street Brooklyn, NY 11220 718-492-6334 http://assembly.state.ny.us/leg/?default_fld&bn=A03908&Summary=Y&Actions=Y&Text=Y&Votes=Y
  11. if i could i'd buy 1000 rounds of 223 Rem and then they'd "know" i have an AR-15. when they show up i'd show them my bolt action savage varminter in 223 Rem and then i'd show them the door. too bad i can't get a hold of the round i shoot. i've got 130 or so right now but come time the woodchucks come out that'll not last too long.
  12. ...also your point of impact will change a little. i put a Burris Speed Bead on my turkey gun and it works great. dial it in at 10 yards and you got pin point precision. last long beard i called into 5 steps by the time he came into the open. head was moving too much so i aimed right at the base of his neck. it hit the ground hard and didn't flop once. if anything else was different i probably would've missed. extremely tight patterns have their downfalls.
  13. i've got lots of different turkey shells and choke tubes for my 12ga turkey gun haven't found that combo that pushes out beyond 50 yards that makes me all warm and fuzzy yet. people that say they can kill turkeys at 70 or 80 yards with hevi-shot are just plain unethical. haven't found a choke that works for almost everything. doesn't seem to be any reasoning some combos just work... that said i'd start with a PureGold or Indian Creek turkey choke. seem to work well with a lot of different combos, but no guarantees if you're real picky or shooting out past 50 yards. biggest thing is keep in mind getting a choke that says right on the packaging that it will work with loads like hevi-shot.
  14. i will say a tractor is where it's at. i can get any place with my Kubota B7200 4x4 that you can get with an ATV with brush cutter in tow. before i got that i had just bought a house with a little over 2 acres of grown up fields with sapling trees and thick weeds chest high. i used a Honda Foreman 450 with a tow behind Swisher. it worked the clutch a bit hard to go slow enough and the belt on the swisher would slip if i went any faster. if you keep on it when it's half that or preferably less that setup would work fine.
  15. honestly i used hunting knives more and more until the wife and i bought a set of Henkels. we got "forever sharp" and they're sharp but not a true sharp (fine serrations). they work well for everyday kitchen work, however i like my sharpened hunting knives for raw meat. hate the 90/10 angles rather just have 20 on both sides. Henckels other knives that aren't "forever sharp" are great and I'd go with them. I knew it before i bought the forever sharp stuff and will never let my wife talk me into a set again. what's really nice for the kitchen as well as the field is Smith's reverse carbide and ceramic sharpener. get the knife blade a little soapy with dish soap and touch it up with the ceramic side and you can shave with it.
  16. yes it completely does..... I'm applying in Rensselaer county now. Turning in the app and getting finger printed in the AM.
  17. is there a minimum entry score, gross or net?
  18. if you were to send teeth out, roughly how much does it cost for a cementum analysis on a deer? i've never had it done before.
  19. in learning more about deer and management i figured i'd give this a go. what i've learned is just what you said. don't know how anyone can tell the difference. i've looked at lots of known jaw bones and sometimes you guess well and other days are just bad. much harder than looking at swapped out premolars with numbers of cusps.
  20. it's easy enough but your d-loop will be better and better with practice. tie it like the suggestions say. your knots so be opposite each other. if you shoot a hand held release then have the top d-loop come out in the inside of the bow string. if you shoot an index finger release with a wrist strap set it up the opposite of that. BCY and Gibbs make good D-loop material. top knot is done first. flare it and melt it before it goes on the string. then tie the bottom knot and make sure not to leave much if any slack. the loop will look flattened and too tight. give a pull on it and then cut, flare, and melt it as close to the knot as you can. be careful not to melt anything else. wait a minute or two and then use d-loop pliers to pull the loop out and tighten the knots. you can use needle-nose opposite their normal use to stretch the loop and set the knots as well. i like to use a d-loop with soft nocks (tied string). if done right you'll be able to twist up or down the string with both to adjust your nock height without doing everything over again.
  21. Word has already gotten out quite a bit all over NY. It's important that we keep fighting for our freedoms.... Something we can do as gun owners for a reasonable amount of money, to sway our state representatives into changing this new gun law in New York State. That is, if everyone who owns a gun, or who believes in the right to own guns, would take the effort to write a simple note to their state assembly person, senator and this governor, expressing their opposition to this new gun law. Most people will not write because they don’t know what to say, this is where the club leader ship should be willing to write a form type of letter so others would have an idea about what to say in their own letter. The amazing thing is the cost of a piece of paper, envelope, stamp and one hour of their time, verses not being able to attend a rally or send in a couple of hundred dollars to NYSRPA which is what some of us are going to do. If every person that owns a gun or like I said believes in the write to own a gun would do this simple task, we would flood their mail boxes with letters that they cannot ignore. It will get their attention when it is expressed to them that you will not vote for them if they voted for this new gun law. If we can get this to all clubs and gun owners from Long Island to the Canadian border and from Buffalo to the Vermont/ Massachusetts border the effect would stagger their offices and bury them in letters. Thousands of letters get their attention and make them think a little harder that they will be out of a job after the next election, verses one letter with a thousand signatures which they throw in the garbage can. If your elected official voted against this law they deserve a letter telling them how please you are with their decision to do so. The crazy part of all this is, we have not had an incident in New York State with an AR 15 type rifle or a legally owned glock high capacity magazine handgun, but they want us to pay the price for others actions. It will take the effort of a lot of leaders from a lot of gun organized clubs to accomplish this, however it can be done with the help of the internet this is very doable. If our club leaders take the time to get them the names, addresses and how to do it, this will get a lot of attention. LET THIS MOVEMENT START HERE WITH US, LET THEM HERE WHAT WE HAVE TO SAY IN OUR OWN WORDS, DON’T BE RUDE, JUST DIRECT AND TO THE POINT THAT WE ARE OPPOSED TO THIS NEW LAW AND DISPLEASED WITH THOSE THAT VOTED FOR IT. Remember the movie Miracle on 42nd St and what that court room looked like with all those letters, we as gun owners can do the same thing with our foolish representatives. Gun owners should all send letters between March 1st and March 7th of 2013, let them see the power of gun owners when our backs are to the wall.
  22. so why does the old law make it felony counts? they must not have been pre-ban mags and that's why?
