Assembly gun bill
dbHunterNY replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
it's difficult to read only in that the formatting is compressed. in reponse to previous posts though, i read it as every 10 round clip that would be in a semi-auto 22LR would be banned. you have a 1 yr to get rid of it, but it's still banned. you can't just shove something in it to take up the space either as the would still be a mag that is easy converted back which isn't permitted from what i read. tube fed 22LRs are exempt but there's got to be 1000's of 22LR rimfires out there in NY with clips (obviously capable of holding 10 rounds) and are now useless. -
i'm within her district and voted to get her elected. good to see her working hard for what NYers in her district and elsewhere want and not just what she thinks we want. feels good to have a woman like this in office. i've alread signed it and passed it on to many others and checked others forums to make sure it was posted there as well. thanks for posting the link.

Who wants Yearling Buck Protection with ARs in their area?
dbHunterNY replied to Meat Hunter's topic in Deer Hunting
i could write a book on this but i'll keep things short. i've fiddled with this for over a decade on my family's farms and with partial neighboring farm involvement... adding up to over one thousand acres. spread or 4 points to a side minimum is the only way to protect ALMOST all yearlings. shooting no spikes and bucks with 3 points to a side or more doesn't do a whole lot as you can clean off practically all 2.5 year olds throughout the course of the season. also with a 3 pts per side min, bucks rarely make it to 3.5 yr old. 3.5 yrs old is still only halfway to maturity for body size and growth. genetics changing is almost negligible, but point AR's will hinder bigger antler genetics. it'll only help you put better age structure in front of a hunter to help teach them. age trumps everything else when it comes to antler size. however, back to age structure, it will allow more breeding bucks to survive to ensure all doe get breed in the first cycle which leads to healthier fawns the following fall leading into winter.- 320 replies

well it sounds like everyone involved was lucky as heck that the shooter was just a kid who was bullied, not completely crazy, and out for blood. otherwise they'd be dead. the only person seriously injuried was the bully, which is still not acceptable. taking into account CA is one of the states with the most gun control, and that the school just set in place all this protocol for preventing stuff like this, it shows that it can still happen. if more had stepped up for the kid then maybe he wouldn't have been so inclined to make the horrible decision of shooting the bully as the solution. thank God the outcome wasn't any worse. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/11/taft-high-school-shooting_n_2453871.html

i think the thread got a little highjacked and on a tangent. probably my fault. last i heard it wasn't reported that any rifle was in the school. handguns were used inside and a shotgun was in the trunk. watched the full video were the chief coroner said that victims had been shot with a rifle but then wouldn't answer answer any other details around that, despite he said that he could due to it didn't really matter with there not being a trial. at that point i gave up trying to continue figuring it out. no matter what i read i whether the source was for guns or against i figured i'd be hard pressed to find out the truth. i'm sure i'll start looking again at some point.

sorry you thought the analogy was lame. it's a rather gray area when the first "gun" was created. gun powder was derived from a powder used to treat skin infections. it was used to heal. Back in pioneer days guns had a primary purpose for many, which was to go out and hunt for food to sustain life. they were also used for war, but i think it's highly unlikely someone would choose war over using it to get food, pending they had to give one more importance over the other. i think i've had it figured out for a while now.

i am with you that the reports have been very confusing and conflicting from the start. however, that doesn't change any results of what happened. that said i think it is immoral to compare me, a gun owner of an AR-15 or any gun, to these horrific individuals acting on horrible intentions. say a SOBER driver in a sports car going too fast plows over a bunch of kids playing in the street. that still doesn't give me the right to say an anti-gun person or anyone else's sports car should be taken away or made ridiculously hard to keep. My reasoning would not be so concrete if it was simply due to another individuals negligence and the fact that it's performance exceeds other cars. All vehicles should be stripped of their HP to go max of 30 mph and all options, radio/audio systems included, should be banned. That way drivers have limited characteristics to distract them or allow them to plow someone over and kill them. Seem reasonable? one individual's freedoms start where another individual's ends. ...that about sums it up.

New World's Fastest Production Rimfire
dbHunterNY replied to dbHunterNY's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
he simply picked popular rounds. i agree though, a better comparison would've been between a 30gr Vmax 22WMR and a 17gr Vmax 17HMR and the other guns. then you're definitely right the 17 HMR only is surpassed by the 22WMR when it comes to energy and only in the first 100 yards. Every else the 17HMR proves to be a better round. makes sense. the 17HMR was meant to replace the 22 WMR. don't think it matters what round he used when comparing with this new super mag though... simply a bigger bullet and bigger thicker case... no surprise it's going to out perform the other calibers. heard of issues with reloading hornet cases and their availability. despite the velocity, accuracy still seems to be there. i think if someone is looking for a rifle in this range it's a very promising. -

his opinion is a little bias because he's a winchester man. i don't have doubts it'll be good... an ammunition company wouldn't put in years of R&D and funding to introduce a dud. how popular it'll become is up for speculation.... i'm probably going to buy on though. -

Storing Guns - Cocked or uncocked?
dbHunterNY replied to Elmo's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
i've always stored all guns completely empty and with the safety on since i was a young kid. never had a weak pin or any issues yet from over a dozen guns. -
that's crazy! i've had some on me each year. it's important to come in from the woods and check yourself over good that night. for scent control i keep a lot of outer layers mainly in ziploc big bags so that helps keep them out of the house and vehicle. not much of a worry if you pull them off within 24 hours or before they start digging in. seemed like there was a ton this past spring and summer. this fall and winter i didn't see many at all.

i've done ground jerky for a while now.... i usually do 10 lbs at a time. cut the amount of curing salt and seasoning by half. then i add brown sugar depending on what else i use. i'll use BBQ sauce and/or steak sauces and mix in with it. the jerky gun will help keep the thickness consistent.

for a while before and partially during college i solely worked on the family farm and still do a little bit. after that i worked for the NYS Parks & Rec as an engineering intern for a short while in college. then for a short while i worked in a manufacturing plant as an electrical engineer. now for the last handful of years i've been an electrical engineering consultant at a firm. we do anything from college dorms and dining halls to data centers to health care facility construction, and even high security government facilities.
