  1. Only had a couple doe tonight. Got home and tinkered with my main hunting bow. Congrats to everyone who put one on the ground. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  2. First sit of the year and decided to go to a rod and gun club property. Figured a couple hours on mediocre property is better than nothing. Piles of dropped acorns to my right. Few intersecting trails 25 yards on front of me at the edge of a swamp. Sitting behind the best cover I could come up with. Tribute to @Biz-R-OWorld no time for stands. Hunting on the ground with my back up bow. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  3. They're all just checks I have. 2" to the left of dead center isnt bad when I say I'm off though. It's all muscle memory. Shouldn't have to think about anything like you said. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  4. 3rd (oldest) picture is a coyote, 2nd (2nd oldest) picture is of a bobcat, and first picture (most recent) is rocket from guardians of the galaxy. obviously saving the day from deer predators.
  5. neck you want to give it lots of time to break down and dissolve that connective tissue. 185 is good but uncovered with heavy smoke for a couple hours and then wrap it up for a while so it doesn't dry out at all. anything close to 200 will work. just need to give it time to breakdown. i then put it in the fridge to set up. when you pull it cold it'll separate easier from tough tissue easier. if you're okay with pulling it apart and not having a solid roast. i know someone that cooks amazing bbq chicken at 156 degrees. just need enough time and maintained moisture the lower you go.
  6. i heard a stupidly wealthy individual say that when you sit down at a table and set your cell phone on the table it destroys all respect he has for you. I get it people are attached to them and smart phones are not easily stowable anymore. still he said that tells him that something else is likely more important that might come up than him giving you his time and undivided attention. it's not reciprocating respect.
  7. just this past weekend wife and i went to out for lunch. four dual sport BMW bikes pulled up. they were a group of chicks that were friends late 30's to 40's. said they do a long ride at least once a year. rode scenic back roads down through VT and into adirondack foothills into NY were we were. who knows were they were going next. i was jealous. that'd be a ride way cooler than just nicer roads. you can take that type of bike anywhere. they had 60% offroad tires too so you know they were.
  8. more families would benefit from sitting down at a dinner table to eat breakfast or dinner together without electronics. we've been in our house less than a year but the first thing we did was purchase a large Mesa style farm table that's something like 12' long. Thanksgiving is coming up. How do you celebrate without a dinning room table? Changes like people not needed a dining room table are indirectly why society has gotten so screwed up. Nobody is willing to give their undivided attention others anymore and just talk without without the intentions of just getting information from someone. I'm even guilty at times.
  9. thanks for pointing out how low my standards are.
  10. no bidding wars needed. i'll make a deal with a recurve tossed in.
  11. biological term is called dispersal. they do that this time of year. youngest bucks get the boot from mom and bachelor buck groups that established an order of dominance during velvet tolerate each other less and break up.
  12. it's likely to depend on the profile too. head with longer shorter blades will have less of an effect than shorter taller blades that have to be pushed through more. an exaggerated difference would be comparing the effort to push a butter knife through a block of cheese versus a sharp knife. jerkman brought up a good point. might consider shooting many arrows in different spots for both heads and take an averages.
  13. i know a family business that buys and sells estate stuff. they have a hard time getting rid of furniture like this because of the style. it's too bad because a lot of newer furniture isn't made nearly as well or from the same quality wood as this stuff. this is furniture that could last through generations of use if cared for.
  14. someday i'll hunt out there. hunted others parks out in western ny successfully. we've got a lot though.
  15. i just spoke with a DEC biologist for my area. her and her boss (region 4 biologist) encourage me to shoot one if given the chance. not sure though. don't have many in my area. might end up watching it and letting the opportunity pass by. lol
  16. both... early season i usually hunt in scouting mode glassing from a distance but there's always doe around. if one presents a shot i'll take it if i have time to process it. also allows me to recover it without leaving evidence of my presence where i think deer of interest are. i've double lunged a doe for meat, while glassing and formulating a plan to move in on a patterned buck. moved in to the higher traffic spot the very next say and tagged a good buck. i think famous tv personality hunters like Drurys do this but only on a larger scale with more space. they have certain parts of a property they use to take doe with bow only. then spots with denser cover and more conducive of rutting activity are saved for the rut.
  17. yea i'm with you... this one will probably bite ya too.
  18. you'd never have any use for 85 or so henry rifles in 22 mag! let alone by safe space to put them all. such a silly idea. all you need is just one of these and I'm sure Al agrees with me.
  19. last night we held the first meet and greet along with classroom time with videos and discussion. The event was held at the 4-H training center and shooting sports facility in Saratoga, whom the Upper Hudson River Valley QDMA branch sponsors. we started with informal meet and greet including a good spread of food. the group enjoyed tacos as we consumed about 5 lbs of venison taco meat. videos and discussion covered history of the north american whitetail deer population, giving an intro to the field to fork program, conservation model and related laws that were put in place to support it, and very briefly touched on whitetail biology. next class and discussion takes place on October 16th. We had 10 new hunters for the roster moving forward for this season. We had one female in the group, as well as people of various ethnicities and walks of life. All seem very engaged.
  20. wife being prego is killing her being a beer drinker. problem is NA beer isn't necessarily zero alcohol. a lot is 0.5%.
  21. A yearling deer taken later in the season wont always have three cusps to the third premolar. Itll look just like a 2.5 yr old with two cusps but with no dentine showing on some teeth and the premolars will be pearly white with no staining. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk
  22. cementum annuli analysis. we do that with bucks to fine tune our tooth wear method. it'll get you a practical age though say 2-3, 3-4, 4-5 at the very least. we've gotten pretty accurate by pairing the two. otherwise there's no way to know if you're using the wear and replacement method correctly.
  23. i've been pondering putting the head on a shorter section of arrow shaft that doesn't favor one side and checking if it's weighted evenly around the circumference. seems like it would be possible to sharpen out a nick or damage it might because lop sided. i use a whetstone with a pretty fine grit and pull vs push to finish. they get pretty sharp. i don't getting into leather and stroping compound.
