Last year I shot a doe with a crossbow using a Montec G5…from 10 yards. It went clean through both lungs, and still barely any blood.

I remember your last pic like this, love it!

So again, this has been a crazy season for me…actually crazy several seasons. I only started bow hunting in 2017, deployed in 2018, so this year is my 4th year. In 2017 and 2019 I saw some huge 10 pointers on my property, never got a shot at them (well to be honest I did but terribly missed, since I had no idea what I was doing).
Fast forward to last year when EHD hit, I saw zero bucks all season. I was going out every single day throughout bow and gun season. This year I did not have high expectations, since I heard that EHD was back. Well I got a little 7 pointer early November, who was the first deer that I even saw out there. I’ve been bow hunting since then, because I figured I already got one buck, it wouldn’t be fair to get another deer with a rifle at that point. Well I didn’t see a single deer since that little buck, until yesterday. I thought he was an 8 pointer when I shot him late at dusk, turns out he’s a 10!
I started tracking him this morning, which took a total of 3 hours. I will never use these Montec G5 broadheads again.
We all know how frustrating and discouraging tracking can be. I even called Deer Search. At one point the blood trail started leading downhill, and I could see for several hundreds yards in every direction, and could see that there was no dead deer in sight. If I continued to look for tiny specks of blood on my hands and knees, it would have taken a week. So instead I decided to just walk in the same general direction and hope to get lucky. Well…I did! I ended up walking into an area where there were rubs and scrapes everywhere. So I figured this is definitely where he went. Sure enough, after checking several scrapes, I found some that had blood in them (btw why did he do that?). I walked another 100 yards in the same direction, and finally stumbled upon him.
Looks like a fighter. One of his ears has a bite out of it, and all the points of his antlers are worn down.

Let it lay....treeguy is right. 6 hrs. For liver, I would wait a solid 8 for gut and being already bumped once.
I accidently bumped my opening day buck.....it would have died in its first bed 100 yards inside the wood...but when it got bumped it headed down into a huge ravine. The drag after finding it was the worst ever.

Recovered! Turns out he’s a 10. Story to follow.

Yeah I’m gonna wait. I’m realizing now that where I found the arrow is probably where he laid down the first time. Oh well…some good tracking awaits me in the morning!

Quartering towards you or away? Yes certainly possible. How far was shot any pics of blood on ground?
Shot was 20 yards, blood is bright red. Have not seen any bubbles or pink froth. He was quartering toward me

What a season! All season, I only saw 2 bucks: the one I shot a few weeks ago, and the one I just shot an hour ago! I hit him low in the chest with a Montec G5 (Last year I shot a doe with this broadhead, straight through the lungs, but there was barely any blood), him run a few yards and stop. I got down and checked for blood, didn’t see any, but heard him get up and start walking away (it was dark by then), so I just walked home. Gonna go back out as soon as I finish dinner, I really hope it was a lung shot!
I found the arrow about 100 yards away. It is completely covered in blood and stinky smelling bile. I shot him at an angle, is it possible it went though his lung as well as intestines?

Good luck with him. If I were you I'd ditch the Montecs for that very reason. I had the same issue as you. Upon research online it's a common problem with them. No blood, even on great hits.

What’s a better fixed broadhead?

I know the rules are different in some parts of the state and I vaguely remember there being something different downstate but how do you have another buck tag?
This year it was one deer of either sex for bow, and another one for regular season

So youre going all out like that for a doe? I love it! #respect
And thank you for your service
Well I do have another buck tag, but yeah honestly I'm very happy with the one I already got. Guess I'm just scouting for next year...

Aren't you the dude who was carrying a buck out on his back a week or two ago?? WTF??? I don't think one needs to be such a HE-Man while out hunting. Better to be safe than sorry.
Haha I guess hunting just reminds me of my days as a Force Recon Marine...

I did...but it was so deep it went into my waders haha. I just waited until my body heat warmed up the water and it essentially became a wetsuit.

If you were to shoot him, would DEC give you a replacement tag?
Does he count as an antlerless?

Theres a fugitive on the loose here and the search area is the woods one block over from the woods I hunt. So I'm guessing if he doesnt turn up there they will scour my area, which is not ideal. On the bright side they closed the schools so my kids are thrilled lol
I'd count it as a win if you "accidentally" shot the fugitive...

Planning on going into the swamp tomorrow morning where I discovered so many huge rubs and scrapes. Very excited thinking about it.
