I'm in 3J, and last year was the first time I noticed peak rut activity, and it was around veteran's day
-
Today I read something that said the peak rut is the same time every single year, and is not affected by moon, weather, temperature, food, etc. First time I've heard this?

Ok I’m looking at 62 acres a friend owns, all woods surrounded by thousand acres of woods..
He has a small cabin on it very basic ...
no electric ... it’s about 3 miles in on a seasonal gravel road ..
Fingerlakes area..
I’m used to hunting 30 acres surrounded by farm land ..
This almost seems like too much land for good deer hunting , kinda like being in the middle of the Adirondacks
I would kill for that

I’ve scouted areas of 3N , 3M and 3J. Seems like they’re very spotty, in all the areas I’ve checked, mostly reds. when you find them, the deer are hitting them hard. I don’t see enough on the ground to last them the winter, though
Hmm ok so I have to look for red oak trees?

+1. Everyone i speak to in 3N and 3S has said zero acorns and way less deer seen in person & on camera. EHD may be factor too, but definitely the worst acorn year I can ever remember.
also, the deer look normal size fat wise so they are eating something else for sure. leafy greens i guess?
Yeah I'm in 3J

Yeah I moved my main stand about 20 yards away, but I don't think it did anything. I also have a tree I saddle hunt from near the big bedding area, but the deer haven't even been going there either. There is one other spot I'm thinking of going to check out, where I walked into a doe sleeping.

With all the new changes, it's easy to see that the deer have shifted their movement patterns on your property. Perhaps they are still using it, but in different places than you are used to seeing them? You may need to scout a bit to find the new travel areas, and move stands accordingly. But I'd be very surprised if they have abandoned your property totally. They have only adjusted to the changes. They are there somewhere. Once YOU adjust, you'll be fine!
Good luck!!
Thanks! Yeah I'm hoping during peak rut they'll be wandering through more often!

Lots and lots of acorns in the hills of Albany county this year. But production from individual trees can vary greatly from property to property.
There could also be a different food source, the deer are now hitting in your area? That may have changed the deer patterns?
If you have the doe's, the bucks will soon be there.
There have definitely been a lot of changes...someone bought the 30 acres to my east and cleared out about half of the deer bedding area, and someone else bought 50 acres to my south and set up a few large tents where their kids run around, and then my neighbor cleared out 9 acres to my north where the doe used to come through every single evening.
I had a beautiful 6 pointer on opening day within 15 yards of me...passed on him and haven't seen him since, and barely seen any doe since then either. -
I just heard on TV that this year oak trees aren't producing as many acorns. Would that help explain why I've been seeing a SIGNIFICANT decrease in deer activity? This time in previous years I had been seeing multiple big bucks in the stand as well as on the cameras, but this year I've barely seen anything so far. So frustrating.

This is the hardest part of the year in alot of ways. You have to wait a whole nother 10 days for this lull to be over and that magical time of year to start. Meanwhile your hindbrain is all "Just take some time off and get in the woods!"
I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one!! I’ve been “taking a break” from the woods and it’s killing me...But when I thought about it, I realized I’ve only been taking a break for 1 day!

30° this morning, saw a young buck chasing a doe
-
Decided to get out of my stand and walk around...saw a doe sleeping 35 yards in front of me me, waited for her to wake up and look at me, and debated for a long time whether I should shoot her or not. Would have been a cool story, my first stalk kill. Decided not to shoot, and followed her around, watching her bed down a few more times.
-
37° out. Haven’t seen or heard a single deer. Nothing on the trail camera for the past several days either. I wonder what’s going on?? In past years I would see several doe at least every single day.
-
I've only had success rattling in small bucks, never big ones.

It's a legit thing. And it works. I have stacks of cam videos and photos showing this.
I had a 10-pointer I was watching for 3 years...wouldn't show up until late October every year. Not sure if he's still around this year...

I got a new ghillie suit and tried it on for the first time yesterday. 4 doe came up within 15 yards of me and just started at me for a long time. Which is what normally happens anyway, but I feel like they were even more confused and suspicious than seeing me in normal hunting clothes.

On Saturday, I saw 2 6-pointers, a button buck, and at least 5 does, all within 10 yards of me. Then didn't see a single thing Sunday or Monday!

If you had ever taken a course in parasitology, you’d never even think about eating any animal parts raw. Way too many things that can do very nasty things in your body.
Ok but what about just a bite

I was hunting caribou in NWT with an Inuit guide, George Konana...
I shot my first caribou, a nice bull...
While he was butchering the bull, he set the liver aside, and then punctured the bloated stomach...Caribou bloat almost immediately after they die... They just hit the ground an inflate...
He cut off a slice of the raw liver dipped it in the stomach contents, and ate it, and licked his fingers afterwards...
George said " There is too much here for me, do you want some..??"
I said " **** you, George ".....
And he’s still alive?

Well I believe Native Americans did it as a way to honor their kill, and to pay respect to nature.

2020 Rut Report
in Deer Hunting

Same here. By this time in past years, I will have seen several big bucks, in person as well as on the cameras. So far nothing even on the cameras. No deer poop, no scrapes, no rubs.
