  1. For me; none of your polling options! Simply love to be outdoors, in a stand during the fall months & enjoying nature. If I see squirrels, turkeys or deer - it's an unanticipated bonus. Icing on the cake. Per chance I get an opportunity to shoot a deer, sprinkles on the icing on the cake. Love watching the animals, listening for twigs snapping or the slightest of movement in the brush. When I was working, hunting was an escape from the day-to-day stresses. Sort of a mind cleansing or rejuvenation process. Now that I'm retired it's more of a reflecting therapy.
  2. You're assuming she'll miss you those 2 xtra weeks...........?? LOL
  3. Good point Lawdwaz! erussel - always making lemonade when you get lemons...LOL For those early Oct., dusk, questionable shots - may want this # on your cell...? http://deersearch.org/contact-us/
  4. There ya' go, thanks Doc! Like every thing in life, if there were the perfect "gizmo" - everyone would be making it.
  5. Sorry for my oversight to the minority of hunters that still use aluminum arrows. Title should have read; CARBON Arrows - FYI, ........... Didn't intent for this to be a discussion on the merits of aluminum vs. carbon arrows. If you still use aluminum arrows, whatever works for your situation!!
  6. Sure we all have researched this topic, but there may be some who simply rely on the local pro shop or big-box hunting store's expertise (??). Interesting reading all the same!!! Very neat FOC calculator when you input your arrows setup. Informative chart about straight, helical or offset vanes and types vs. arrow useage. Several chapters on different pages which address varied topics!!! http://www.huntersfriend.com/carbon_arrows/hunting_arrows_selection_guide_chapter_1.htm
  7. Public comment peroid is over and changes to Whitetail Mgmt Plan go to next step. Not too sure what that is; enacting, passing, etc. Yes, part of plan is Oct 1st opener for Archery (deer) in the SZ. Also a Youth firearms the weekend after Columbus day (SZ). Both should be in effect for the 2012-2013 season. http://www.dec.ny.go...ions/81317.html
  8. FYI about the Bushnell. The company had a lot of issues with their 2010 models. Still a lot of those available as new. (Esp on eBay) Model #s will be 119435, 119445, etc. 2011 was a huge improvement in quality for their Trophy Cams. Those model #s are similiar, but end with a 6. ie; 119436, 119446, etc. Haven't seen any reviews of the 2012 models. They are disguinished in the model # by the last digit being a 7, ie; 11437, 119447, etc.
  9. Too funny!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Never had much luck sneaking up on a turkey. Their phemonal eyesight stack the odds against the hunter. If you're using a diaphram call, you can use your hand to throw the sound of the call to mimic the hen moving. The rules of romance for turkeys is for the hen to go to the gobbling. You're trying to reverse that. It's done by many, but you need to sound realistic & like a love sick hen. IMHO - Found gobblers tend to respond better to a box call than the more raspy diaphrams. When you get setup & they're coming in - then I use the mouth call. The experts (?) tell you a turkey will not cross a barrier to come in to your calling. I've called them across roads, through fences, over creeks & over or around most other natural barriers. So, I guess the rule of thumb is that some will while others won't........... Found the #! reason a gobbler won't come to you is because he is already with a hen(s). Then you better be trying to coax the hens towards you. FYI - There is more to persuading a gobbler to come to you than the simple hen yelps. Cutting, purrs, putts, etc mixed in with yelps will get a tom more interested. Get a tape, CD or DVD of natural turkeys calling in the woods. May even find something on youtube!?! The absolute worst racket & attempt at calling I've ever heard turned out to be actually 2 hens. When you know a gobbler is coming in to your calls, there is nothing more nerve wracking than silence. BAM, there he is at 20yds - you had better be ready to shoot. I have had good luck in these situations with the occassional purrs & putts. It at least gets a response & you can keep track of where he is.
  11. Is that true? The bubble level on the IQ sight that accurate/precise that you don't need a peep?
  12. Troy Landry and the "Choot 'em" outfitters. Sorry, just couldn't let that one pass..... Flordia in August.....? Been there in July & wished I hadn't!!!
  13. Agree 100%! As much as we think we're the supreme predator, study our prey & weapons - rarely does a hunt go as shown on TV or described in a magazine article!!!! IMHO - Textbook hunts would be boring! Think I'd have to reconsider my thoughts on hunting if every bow shot was at 20yds & broadside or the 30yd standing gobbler opportunties. At the moment of truth - we process the situation within seconds & make decisions accordingly. I'll be the 1st to admit some of my decisions end up being less than ideal. Afterwards, we do the 2nd guessing. Live & learn!! Apply the lessons learned to the next opportunity! Those split second, adreleline charged decisions and encounters are what keep us going back into the woods as hunters.
  14. Funny you should post this, there was a hunting show on recently with an amateur chef doing just this. Wish I could remember exactally the process, but basically... Pound meat flat, both sides with a tenderizing mallet, Marinate for ~12hrs in a salt brine with honey & I believe bay leaves (may have been vinegar also), Rinse well & re-marinate in soy, beef bullion & whatever other spices you desire for several hours, Grill, pan fry or broil. Do NOT over cook.
  15. Join the "Humble Pie" club. I also missed an opportunity this morning. All part of hunting & how we deal with the moment of truth. Sounds good,,,? No it doesn't make me feel any less humiliated either. Make you feel better, check the pattern of your gun at 15yds. Bet it is pretty small & tight. Some shotguns with full chokes & a XXX full choke tube are better at 30+yds than in closer.
  16. Must have been an engine transplant. I special ordered a new 1972 Nova SS with all the accessories for $3500. Quite sure the biggest motor was the watered down 350 with a meager 200 something HP. Wish I still had it!!!!!
  17. Ever watch any of the classic car auctions (Meccum) on TV. Something to dream about, but $$$$. Of course, restoring yourself is a great project too. Can pace the restoration finacially. Have fun!!
  18. Foaming at the mouth with fangs bared...?
  19. Body in rough shape? Engine a 289 or larger ci? Going to need to add the lead additive to the gasoline? Believe there is no NY required smog or pollution control on pre-1972 vehicles. Be sure to document your progress with photos through out the entire restoration. Good luck!
  20. Admire your honesty, but you do realize you're going to get "blasted". Although illegal & out of season, interesting question all the same!!!! Never had that situation in the past. Would I, if the opportunity arose......? Honestly, it would be on my mind. Can't give you a Y-N answer. Somewhere between probably not & maybe consider it.
  21. Gotta be one of the top 10 strangest wildlife related things I've ever seen!!!!!!!!!! What the heck did he think he had and what was he trying to do with it............................?
  22. Aren't a lot of birds in my area to begin with, but I've seen a decline in just the past 7 years. I'd be open to a one bird limit if the DEC could prove that would potentially reestablish the numbers. IMHO - Predators are the main issue! Open, year round season on coyotes might be more of a help. Raccoons are another huge problem with their nest robbing! Not sure how that can be dealt with other than landowners trapping them.
  23. Embarrarassed to say, but I had a similar situation. 57-58# bow - been shooting too long - got shaking - at 30yds shot just over the target. Arrow ricocheted off gravel driveway and went 15yds beyond target into a steel, insulated exterior door I had left open on a shed. Field point went completely thru both sides of door and was protruding ~2". Gave me a whole new perspective on the set-up of my bow & arrows. Am I going to bulk-up my upper body in order to shoot higher poundages and chance any repetitive injuries - NO!
  24. LMAO Aren't fridays your typical joke day Paula? More....
