Well, if some don't already know, MONEY can get you big bucks. I guess the Lakosky's can kiss the feet of those who made them TV stars for the ability to buy the prime land and keep it producing big bucks. I myself am grateful that I still have a small place to hunt and I'm perfectly happy with the dink bucks and does I kill on it. Doesn't cost me too much money and I'm no less content than those who have the need to kill the big ones.

Ok. . . so who else is thinking about opening day 24/7?
steve863 replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
Honestly NO I don't think about it 24/7. Yeah, it crosses my mind and I still look forward to it since I do like to hunt, but I have had 30 plus opening days under my belt and have learned that there are way more important things in life than to think about hunting 24/7. However, I get a real kick out of people saying that they do! They must live way less hectic lives than I do. LOL -
Yeah, you are right, the archers ARE stupid to be paying these prices, but the manufacturers also typically have something called "manufacturers suggested prices". In general you can get a product from a retailer for below this price, but it's not like if the suggested price is $700 that the manufacturers will be making this same product of the same quality for long if retailers are only selling them for $300. If $300 is all they will be getting, you will sooner than later see crappier products being put out for this same $300. So in general I think the products out there right now are really good, but are they worth the money?? I would say no way. The archers AND the manufacturers are equally guilty in my opinion. When I can get a perfectly good gun for half the cost that will outlive me by several future generations with the littlest of care, why would archers OR the manufacturers think bows should cost more?? In my mind there is nothing that justifies this greater price. If bows could at least retain some of their value, maybe I could see it. But they are about as worthless as old shoes even after only a couple of years after purchase.
-
I am not as avid a bowhunter as many others are, but the price of bows and archery equipment is downright ridiculous in my opinion. The prices are shocking compared to when I bought my first bow 20+ years ago. I could buy a perfectly good big game rifle and scope (and many to choose from) that will kill game at 200+ yards with no problem for well under $1000, while the bow companies want me to pay $1000 or more for a bare bow that has an honest killing range of 30 yards or less??? I say BS to that. No way in hell are these bows worth that much money. Plus, if you keep a gun long enough, you will probably be able to sell it for as much or MORE than you paid for it originally. Try doing that with one of these $1000 bows. They are pretty much worthless as soon as you bring them home from the shop.

Yeah, it is a lottery, but if someone already got selected for his first choice, it is unfair that he get more of the pie, before anyone else even gets a crumb. Since everything is computerized, it would be quite easy for the DEC to fix this and make things fair for all since everyone is paying for the opportunity to be selected and don't get their money back if they are denied.
-
Stopping to think about what you said some more, I actually think the way the have this set up now might actually be a bit unfair. Lets say someone gets denied in 4G, their first and only choice since they may not have any other place to hunt. Now you have the next dude in line get selected for their first choice, 4P for example and then he chooses 4G for his second choice and get selected there also. The first guy gets JACK, while the second guy has two DMP's in his pocket, not exactly fair in my opinion. If one gets selected for their first choice, they should NOT get selected for their second choice if that unit has NONE listed for their second choice. That would be more fair in my opinion.

It doesn't matter where you get your appertite as long as you eat at home. You got it. Eating out will sooner or later lead to breakups and divorce. A cheap thrill is not worth such things especially when there are children involved.

I was 19 in 1982. NO way in hell would I have chosen the biggest buck in the world over a naked woman especially at that age. Same holds for 2011, although I would only be LOOKING at the naked women since I am now a married man. For me at least there is more to life than hunting.
-
Oh OK. The way I understood it, was that one couldn't get a second choice permit at all in that unit. I guess if one picks another unit as the first choice, they are still in the game for the second choice. I think the DEC could be a bit clearer on this in their literature.

http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30409.html Unit 4G doesn't give out doe tags for a second choice, so you wouldn't have gotten one anyway.

Hunting Land (Putnam County-3N)
steve863 replied to BizCT's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Sorry to hear it. It's really tough to lose a piece of land you've hunted for so long. I used to hunt in Columbia county, and private land to hunt was EXTREMELY difficult to come by even then. I can imagine it's even more so down in Putnam. To buy a chunk of land to hunt in Putnam will probably cost an arm and a leg also. It's getting tough down in these counties. -
So you've come looking for a fight, eh?? I am MAN enough not to take things that route. Hopefully you are also.
-
Actually maybe there is someone. That fat assed girl in the leopard pattern tights kind of looks like my sister-in-laws butt. My sister-in-law has dark hair though, so maybe it's not her. LOL
-
I wish I knew half as much about everything as you claim to. It seems to me you just post an opposite opinion just to stir things. Wow, you really ARE a tool! What in hell did I say that was contradictory to you? I didn't even see your post when I was writing mine. I am giving the fella my experiences, that's all. If it helps, I can assure you that I have installed more than one scope in my life. LOL
-
Well I do know that there are different potencies of loctite available. If one uses the more potent ones you will be looking for trouble getting the screws off if you want to take them off. I am sure gunsmiths have had more than a few guns come in where scopemount screws were stripped because people couldn't get them off due to loctite locking them up.
-
I know that some people put loctite on scope screws, although I never have. I think you could do more damage than good by putting loctite on if you are not careful. If you tighten the screw down good enough you shouldn't need it. I have had the same scope mounted on my favorite rifle for 20+ years and I never had the screws come loose. I do check them at the beginning of each season, though. I think one would have to do a lot of shooting to jar a good set of mounts loose. The key is also to get a set of GOOD quality mounts. Those cheap aluminum ones are sure to give you trouble sooner than later.

No, he's one of us and we could call each other anything we want. He is in the 3rd row, second boy over. LOL
-
I have seen hunters with those type of eyes. They are the ones looking for game with one eye and for trespassers with the other. They come in handy also when they get tired of looking at their aging, overweight wives. Looks at his darling wife with one just to pretend he's interested in what she's saying, while he uses the other eyeball to scan for sexy younger chicks. LOL

Glad I'm not the only one who has noticed that. Must be a southern thing. Too much fried food maybe.

Geno, as I've said before that is a MIGHTY NICE offer you have made us! We shall see what the good DEC gives me next week as far as my first choice in doe tags for my usual stomping grounds. The probability is low this year, but I do have a preference point from last year, so we will see what happens. Your offer does sound mighty tempting. I know that I probably could see more deer in a few hours on LI than I could the whole season where I hunt. We do bag deer every year where I hunt, but it's not like we get to see some every time out.
-
That sound great, Geno! By the way, I was going to wear the camo shirt that Bubba sent us when we lived back in Africa that has "I love Bubba" written on it, but I figure after this thread he wouldn't want me wearing it. :-[
-
Geno, the WMU out on LI is 1C, correct?? Just want to make sure for when we buy our licenses next week. Can't wait for you to take us out!! The red shirt don't fit me any more, so I will be wearing a green one that has "I love Tanzania" written across it.

I guess you mean corn that was put out as bait? In many places around the country it's perfectly legal and common practice to hunt over bait, feeder, etc. Are food plots really any different? Anyway, it doesn't always bring in the big bucks like many people who don't hunt in this fashion think it does. I do see your point, though. It not exactly exhibiting a lot of hunting skill to sit at feeders. It doesn't always bring in big bucks, but I have seen feeders go off in Texas and it's pretty much like ringing a cow bell for chow time for the does and small bucks.

Looks like it's time for me to post my favorite youtube link to make peace reign again here. For those who don't already know, this was filmed a few years ago and me and Doewhacker can be seen singing in the second row.

Unbelievable! Doc actually put it well in another thread about how boring things would be if there weren't threads where people actually debated things. It's not about being smarter or better. Some people just can't accept anyone else questioning them about their posts or opinions. If someone does, right away they get accused of starting a ruckus and being a smartass. I know that if I took personally everything people throw at me on a forum such as this, I wouldn't even bother to post. Really guys, do you just want threads where someone congratulates the other on the cool trailcam picture they took, the deer they shot, or the new gun or bow they bought and nothing else pertinent was ever discussed?? Go ahead and make this forum that, and it will go under even quicker than we think it will WITH all the arguing here. Interesting threads and topics will keep the forum alive. Boring ones will not keep people coming back for more!
