  1. Maybe in the morning, it may not get much below 60, then out of town till Saturday am. I will try am when it is cooler. I do not like 75 degree sits in the afternoon.
  2. We have had two mornings here already in the low 30's. I will have some handy. I like my hands bare in bow so throw one warmer in a muff, works nice.
  3. ha thought I was ready until I went to grab my Badlands packs I had stored them and my hot seats in a crate I got from something that got shipped to work. Wozers did they pick up a smell! Everything is outside in the fresh air!! And getting sprayed with field spray. stupid stupid stupid Not sure if I am getting out in the morning or not. I fly out to Chicago for work Wednesday through Friday. We'll see.
  4. The most common violation is not reporting your harvest. 40% compliance or so and 242,000 deer killed is 145,200 violations right there. my guess is second would be tresspassing
  5. This year my brother and I did 110 pounds of various brats and sausages a couple weeks later I did 40 pounds more of smoked sticks and summer sausages as well. Second year doing it. I bought a 7 pound stuffer this year that sure helped! It is extra special to enjoy the stuff you put from the hoof into a nice Brat or sausage!! Also did up 14 pints of canned venison as well.
  6. I am an ex smoker and chewer, Shot many deer smoking a Camel and more chewing berry Skoal. I quit smoking maybe 8 years ago now and quit dip now 2 or 3 years ago. The dip I still miss but not cigs at all. Quit both cold turkey. I always have sunflower seeds now in stand.
  7. Disagree I believe it should be a choice. If you want to do it on your property fine. Or practice it yourself fine. I do myself but I took many small bucks over the years that I am quite happy with and ate every last one up good! Hate to take that away from anyone as I think it takes away from our sport. I believe, and have read reports stating, that trends are changing anyway and this is happening without forced regs but by choice. Just not fast enough for those who think NY is going to be Pike County!
  8. So far I took every Friday in November off and Monday the 4th also the 13th. The 11th and 28th are holidays so 9 days off in November. Along with 9 weekend days makes for a lot of hunting. Also took the 16th of December to finish up ML season. I work from home so will hunt every day anyway and if the movement is good well I have a lot of PTO time.
  9. 9/23/13 Well the season is coming quick!! I am pretty much ready to go. Need to pick up some hand warmers and some snacks but otherwise all set. Ramped up the shooting the last 5 - 6 weeks and the bow is shooting well with the new Americas Best Bowstring on it. Checked all the ladder stands and moved one, cleared my trails and lanes. As well as putting down a rubber floor in the tower stand and built some shelves. Got all that done a few weeks ago. Been seeing a ton of deer on the cams behind the house but only one that should of turned into a shooter, have not seen him hard horned. Lots of fox and yote pictures as well. Have one cam down in the hole I put in 3 weeks ago I have not looked at yet. Got both my doe permits this year and will grab some for 8F when the extras come out. I hope to hunt Howland Island more in bow season this year but we will see. It is always easier to hunt any of my spots 5 minutes from home so I just need to get my a$$ outa bed earlier! Might still throw out the blind if my 11 yr old thinks he wants to go some. He can also sit in the tower blind with me as well. I will be hoping for a good doe early and will be letting all 1.5 year olds walk for the bucks and see how it goes. I can not wait to get going even though the first couple weeks are not my favorite. Looking forward to reading everyone's journals as well as keeping you updated on how I am doing. 8 days to go!!
  10. I have had two eaten up. One a nice 8 point I hit good before sunset. It was the year I bought the house I am in now. I hit it pretty well but was concerned with penetration since I saw the arrow sticking out. I let it rest for about 30 minutes and took up the trail. It was a hard trail due to one hole in the deer and I really did not know the property well. I lost the trail and pulled off it went back and ate and checked weather and went back out with no luck, Was a cool night so no worries got up at first light and found the deer in 10 minutes about 25 yards from where I last let off. It went through a real thick patch and down into a drainage. All that was left was the hide, the head and the legs. I would say that deer was 175 on the hoof anyway and in 7 hours it was ALL gone. Second one was on a buddies property and it was a shot too far back and lost the trail in the dark. Next morning found that deer about 70% eaten. They can make short work of one around here.
  11. I personally would not mount it for me, maybe to sell if I could make some money or just euro it. I would not really think it would be much to brag about. I may also be concerned what they were farming it for and if it was roided up and safe to eat. It would sure be a big downer after a certain high of shooting a 160 class buck! Probably be depressed for weeks!
  12. It is a very good sign you are really thinking about this. As others asked above; what have you done so far after High School, as in training, school or jobs? Without more info I can only give you the following advice: 1. Whatever you choose to do, do it well, take pride in your work and always look for what other responsibilities you can ask for. This alone is so rare in workers these days it is astounding. 2. Start putting away money right from the start. Tuck at least 10% away in an IRA or something. Having trade skills no matter if you want to work in the industry is always good anyway. Having to hire people to fix every little thing around your yard, house and vehicles can get costly and gives you something to always fall back on.
  13. The Diamond Infinite Edge http://diamondarchery.com/#/productBreakdown?r=products_products&i=42
  14. I like to get 3 to keep the freezer in good shape. We split any deer with whoever is hunting that day between my Dad and brothers so I like to get one alone and another 5, 6 or 7 to be in the split between us all.
  15. I hunt both mornings and evenings. I probably hurt my chances of scoring an old mature buck a little by overhunting some stands a bit. But I have limited spots and would rather be in the woods than sitting home. I hunt when I can so before work or after I am going if I can. I will try to hunt some public spots early to not pressure the land out back the first couple weeks but sometimes I can not help myself. I seem to do alright!
  16. I bought this bow for my son this year he is 11. You can adjust the weight from 5 to 70 pounds, the draw from 13 to 30 inches. Very nice bow for someone who needs a lot of variance or growing like my son. Also NY does have a minimum draw weight look it up. I would like my son to be able to pull 40 to hunt deer.
  17. Depends on where I am hunting. Out in 8J I would shoot any I had tags for. Out back I may take 1 or 2 this year, I have been seeing a lot. Some years I do not see many and will not take any out there. I will never take a big old matriarch again from out back. Made that mistake 8 or so years ago and it changed the doe behavior on my little piece very negatively for years.
  18. Diamond Marquis Americas Best Bowstring 64lbs 304fps Easton Raiders 2 Blade Rage WB Extreme Sight True Fire Release
  19. I have touched/petted quite a few in Old Forge. For wild deer I have had a few. Probably around 17 at the time during gun season I am sitting in a swamp against a big pine and I had a yearling come in and keep coming until her nose was about 10 inches from my knees. She could not figure out what I was and did the stare until I could not help but move a little. Man that deer turned inside out! Early 20's bow hunting I was in a tree stand and had a decent 6 go by too far out. I thought I knew where the deer was headed, I was along a creek trail. As soon as it was outa sight I got down and jogged around and just stopped behind a tree and out he walked outa some brush directly broadside 5 feet in front of me. I put an arrow right through it. The deer walked maybe 15 yards turned around and fell over dead. A year or 2 later on that same creek I was leaning against a tree during gun. I hear a terrible crashing and such going on and coming closer. All the sudden I see one deer come in head to the ground running through the goldenrod then another right behind head down as well. Going in circles then the lead pops up her head and I see it is a doe and she zips right past me. I could have stuck my hand out and smacked her. Then the second pops up his head and I see antlers and he comes charging right at me. I shot him with the 12 gauge at about 10 feet right dead on in the chest. Nice little 7 point. I thought for sure he was gonna run right through me!
  20. lol I walk into Beers of the World and I swear I hear angels singing. Now I know what my wife feels like in a shoe store!!! There are so many good beers now. Some of my favorites; Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Left Hand Milk Stout, Lake Placid Ubu Ale, McSorley's Irish Black Lager, really like a lot of Saranacs too. A good Augustiner or Paulaner or Obolon or 3 Bean.......... My go to regular more affordable beer is Labatts Blue light. We usually go to a big Beer Festival every year or go on a Brewery tour. Was at Ommegang for a concert and camping a couple months ago man I woke up with an Ommegod headache!! Having a Sam Adams right now, Ruby Mild pretty good.
  21. I will do my last check this weekend to make sure no wind or miscreant damage.
  22. I would love to try this. I live like 30 miles away and have never tried it. I would not know where to start!! I love wild Alaskan salmon are any of the ones there as tasty? I would hate to go when there is a person every 10 feet, sounds like now might be fun. Anybody have some tips?? Where to go? I hear eggs are what works best? How heavy a rod and line? I am not even sure I could tell which is what having never caught one. I would have to bring pics with me!! lol
  23. I still live in a shotgun zone so I still shoot one. I went to a 20 gauge Ithica Derrslayer years ago and never looked back at a shoulder bustin 12 again!! That baby shoots nice and sweet. I only use it opening day and on drives and then usually carry the smoke pole.
  24. Creekside Archery in Central Square Oswego County. I spent last Saturday having him set up my 11 year old son and his bow and tinkerin with mine. Was there well over an hour just us and him. I called the day before and asked what worked for him. Does good work and a nice guy.
  25. Phade very good info and I agree. I have always been impressed by DicksSG business model. And with their score card, always having coupons and regular discounts if you shop smart you can get a way better price on things. I am not sure all that will be available at Field and Stream though. My local Gander is useless, Cabellas is 3 hours away in PA and BPS close to an hour away and poorly stocked and staffed. I would love to see F&S here in Syracuse some day.
