10/28 pm 45 Sat for a bit over 2 hours it was just beautiful out. And another big zero. So lets see it has been officially 7 days since I have seen a deer and somewhere around 35 hours in the stand during that time. I would add it up but it disgusts me! This has got to be the worst October lull ever!!

10/27 am Out behind the house again. Sat from 6:30 to 11 so 4 hours of hunting time and zip zilch zero. Going to sit in the deep hole stand for the first time since I missed that nice buck Sunday. As long as it is not pouring anyways.

10/26 am 52 Out for 2 hours behind the house. Get in my ladder at 6:30 and about 10 minutes later I had one walking around in the brush next to me. By the time it got light it was long gone. That got my hopes up for the sit but to no avail!

Out in the tower stand behind the house for 1.5 hours and zilch. The movement is scarey slow!! I have not even seen a doe in the woods. Man I shoulda had that buck!! lol still haunting me. Supposed to be 74 for a high the next two days, I doubt that will get things going any better. Guess it is lawn mowing afternoon! Supposed to cool of for the weekend though. I am going to be out of town for work most of next week. I am bummed my favorite day to hunt is Oct 31 in the evening. That always seems to be a good watch and the 10 days following it..

Nice shot on the song dog!!

10/25 pm 55 Out behind the inlaws in my climber for just an hour. The spot I used to sit is getting pretty grown up with saplings and my lanes are getting non existant. I can trim here but not cut saplings down so I am trying to find a better tree. Tonight was not the right tree!! The scrapes I saw here last week have not been freshened. They are also the only 3 scapes I have seen anywhere yet. And not one fresh rub. I have not been tracking around the woods looking, I just slip in and out of my stands but there is usually a few here and there opening up. In my areas I really do not think the bucks are even prerut yet.

10/25 am 53 Went down to my old ladder stand in the hole. Another nice morning and zero luck. Sat for 1.5 hours and trimmed a shooting lane before I left.

My girl is really into the sports. She is doing cross country which ends this week, she is doing rec bball, syracuse select bball and trying out for the cyo bball team, also trying out for vollyball next week. I assistant coach baseball, softball and basketball. Hopefully she will pick one or two she really likes and cut back a bit. She has been on crutches the last couple of days with a banged up foot.

nice, that makes for a fun sit. -
11/21 pm 55 degrees 5 to 15 west wind Went down into the new ladder stand in the hole. Had a 2 hour sit. Just before 6 I hear something to my left front and see a deer coming out of the thick stuff at about 40 yards. It is working in left to right and I see it is a buck and a shooter. Antlers out past the ears by a couple inches at least and looked like an 8 anyway. He is eating and puttering in the brush after a minute or so he starts heading to a lane. I draw back and baaa to stop him he stops broadside and I watch my arrow sail low and he spins to take off and kinda falls with a front leg and then gets back up and off he goes. No blood on arrow at all, about 5 pieces of hair caught in one blade and one drop of blood on the ground. It went right under his chest and grazed the far leg just a touch. ARRRRRRRRRRRRR I am thinking I ranged that spot at 32 yards and he was about 5 yards in front of that. Now I am thinking it was 42 not 32, I will not know for certain until I get back and range it. I think I just screwed it up in my head. Ah that stinks!! Glad I just gave him a little cut though and he should be A ok just a bit wiser. Now my brother is up top oh at least 600 yards from me or so. At nearly the same time he had a real nice 8 sneak up behind him with the wind he did not hear it until it was right there. It came under him at 10 feet and busted him and said seeya. Well we saw a couple nice bucks and the bucks won! Pisser after all the hours in stand and finally get a shot and chump it!

10/20 pm 58 off and on breeze Out behind the house in the ladder for a bit over 2 hours. Got a little wet again, absolutely nothing.

10/20 am 54 degrees no wind Got out in 3 Rivers with my brother and brother in law. Once at the parking lot another guy was there and he was going where I was planning to so I went to a different area so I was about 20 minutes later in tree than I wanted. Just kind of went to area I had been before and picked a lucky tree in the dark. About 15 minutes after I get set up another guy goes past me. Then it starts getting full light and the shooting begins!! Oh hey it is opening day of pheasant season!! Dogs barking, bells and whistles and shooting like a small war. I have intentionally hunted here opening morning before just because all the action kicks up deer. About 7:40 I hear one coming after some close shooting and a little 3 or 4 point goes by at about 50 yards. About a half hour later a coyote comes by about the same spot and I am reaching for a call and he busts me bad and flips gone. My brother in law had a bachelor group of three go by him and he clean missed the last one. Said they were all 1.5 year olds. Be back at em in a while.

10/19 pm 64 degrees Hunted in my new stand in the hole. Jumped one going in right near the stand, jujst saw the white salute. Sat for 2 hours no other action, I did trim a couple branches out of a lane we missed.

10/19 am 50 degrees Well the weather said 100% rain and 10 to 20 mph wind? Love weather predictions! It was calm and the rain was over so off I went out behind the house. At 7:30 had what looked like a spike come by at about 40 yards. It was nice and calm out just spit a sprikle or two so decided to stay till 9. Well 8:45 the sky dumped on me to give me a solid soaking before I got to the house.

10/18 pm 64 degrees light wind Went out behind the inlaws for the first time this season. Hit two big scrapes on the way in. Both were pretty fresh and in annual spots. Sat for 1.5 hours in the climber no sightings. Did get to enjoy the marching band practicing at the school, you can hear them a long way off!!

I gotta agree with Grow on this one! I can hunt deer and coyote before sunset and once sunset on my way out coyote and loaded.
-
I print the sunrise sunset chart every year out of the regs book and cut out the section with the dates for deer season and fold in half and cover with scotch tape. It slides right in with my tags and such and is there for quick reference. If you hunt state land you better know the times. One place I hunt the DEC is usually waiting for me/us the first few times out and check licences, broadheads and ask us the time sunset is. Once they know it is us they do not bother the rest of the season. Since I hunt way back in I may not get out untill 30, 45 minutes or more after dark. By the time I pack up, climber down, pack climber and hike out or if I have deer near me I might wait for them to leave so I do not spook them so I may be even later. Or if I am tracking a hit deer, or field dressing or dragging a deer, heck I do not think I ever get out of the woods until well after last light! And there is nothing illegal about it even loaded unless the land is not specifically posted otherwise, I can be coyote hunting as well. The officer has never given me any crap just want to know if I know the time and why I am so late. They also told me once he has a ten minute cushion if someone was off a few minutes. Most of them are pretty reasonable. On another note I hang my deer head up! The blood is not going up or down in a deer by the time it is hanging. And it gets too dark to shoot on overcast days in quite a few of my in the woods stands, especially with leaves on the trees. Just sayin!!
