I was able to spend a lot more time hunting this year since my daughter had ankle surgery and I am not running to soccer all the time this season. I decided I need to invest in some "good" hunting gear. Right now whatever I have is what was on sale and felt was a good deal. Sunday I sat out for an hour and a half and was soaked through and freezing. I am thinking I would like to purchase after Christmas bills are paid so not in any rush. Thinking my first purchase would be a pair of bibs and then a jacket when funds allow the purchase. I don't have extremely long walks to my stand. I usually wear my boots and everything I wear on the bottom on and walk to my stand with my coat strapped to my back pack along with winter beanie, neck gator and warmer gloves in my pack. Warmth, Water resistant and wind resistant along with burr resistance would be my priorities. Probably something Gortex. I am tired of being cold and picking thousands of burrs off my gear. Sitka sounds good but the material sounds like every burr would stick to it. What do you guys recommend? I do very little still hunting and have plenty of cheaper stuff I can wear in warmer weather. I am sitting in a treestand 95% of the time.

I didn't put out any trail cams this season for this very reason....I decided the deer are there regardless of what pictures I get. I just need to be there when they are. -
When I was a kid Thanksgiving was always at my Grandparents. Family, Turkey and all the trimmings. My Dad and Grandpa would leave for deer camp after dinner. I couldn't wait until I was old enough to go. For about the last 20 years I meet the guys at Dunkin Donuts in the morning where we all hang out for about 45 minutes wishing eachother a happy Thanksgiving before we hit the woods. We hunt to about 10 am and then all go home to our families. I will be going home, taking a shower and getting ready to go to my parents house. So all my daughter knows now is Thanksgiving at her grandparents like I did when I was a kid. It is my favorite holiday. No pressure, no presents, just hunting with friends and then family and food. Happy Thanksgiving everyone....

I used those SST's out of my BAR .308 on the deer in my avatar. 5 shots, 5 hits and 5 pencil sized holes in and out. If my last shot hadn't spined him, I am not sure I would have found him. There was virtually no blood. It was obvious the bullets never expanded at all. Shots were about 60 yds. If he wasn't so focused on does and actually ran, he would have been gone and dead somewhere. I was thinking WTF when I was shooting at him, there was no reaction at all, I thought I was missing..... I went back to Remington Coreloks and Federal Fusion because they have always worked. Although this year I had a misfire on a corelok. I am afraid to try those SST's again even though they were the most accurate from what I tried at the range.... You said 150 yd shot....What was the damage like?

Sorry Cynthiafu but you did all you could. It happens to everyone and if it hasn't it will. That sick feeling just shows how much respect you have for the animals you pursue. -

That happened to me with the buck I shot opening day. Same exact thing, pull trigger, WTF, cycle action, he starts to run but I yelled and he stopped. May I ask what ammo you are using? Mine was a Remington Corelok in .308 -
I love these pictures, thank you for sharing and amazing work as always! And what the heck is that thing siting in the front of those Stihls?

3 years, still no buck, but I see all the signs (need help)

I am not a really good hunter so I find it hard to give advice to other people. It sounds to me like you are doing a lot of the right things. The one hunting show (if you can call a show on youtube a show) I really like is the hunting public. They don't have gimmick ads and have to show themselves using 25 different items before the shot that got them their deer. All they hunt is public land and they actually do some public hunting in NY this year. They go in and scout, show what they are looking for, why they like that area, why they setup where they do and almost always at least film a nice buck. It is a great show and I believe it is one of the few shows you can actually learn something watching it. Search the hunting public on youtube. Maybe something in one of their episodes will help you... -

I hunted a lot of years without a good set of Binos. I am not sure what I was thinking. I use them all the time. I use a Bino harness and they are on my chest at all times. Even during Rifle season. I glass most of the deer I see. We have a self imposed 6 or better rule on our lease so I am usually glassing bucks if I see them and looking for antlers when they are in the thick stuff and I see movement. Although every buck I have killed with my rifle I haven't used the binos on. I just said oh, that's a good buck and got the crosshairs on them. I still use the binos during rifle season but it is more for when I see doe to try and pick out a buck that may be following or nearby. I use my rangefinder to range the trees around me and make mental notes. I also use it to range deer that I don't intend to shoot. I guess their range and see how close I am. This year was the first time I ranged a deer I intended to shoot. I had a beautiful buck come in and I was already stood up with bow in hand. I didn't want to screw anything up and he had no idea I was there so I ranged him at 26yds. I leave my single pin at 25yds so I was golden and I shot about two feet over his back. Still not sure what I did wrong and haven't had another encounter with him. I also use my binos to find out that log, rock, leaning tree, or leaf flapping in the wind that you think is a ear movement or tail flick to find out it is exactly what it is and not a deer. Oh, I also leave my range finder around my neck and once it is rifle season I take it out of the pack.... Good post, I'll be curious what others respond.

I passed on a deer this bow season because I was hunting alone. It wasn't a huge deer, but would have been my largest bow buck. Maybe I would have missed him cause I did miss a beautiful Buck at 26 yds. Anyway. I didn't take the shot because I was alone. I thought about the fact that nobody was around to celebrate with if I was able to harvest him. More than half the fun for me is seeing my hunting buddies get a deer or them being there when I get one.

heated vest, insoles
ApexerER replied to 2012_taco's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I have a heated Vest from Cabela's. Had it 6 or 7 seasons now and it is great. I do have two extra batteries for it. It last about 2 hours on high but I generally only need it for the first couple hours on stand. I had the thermocell heated insoles. I agree with everyone that says they suck. I am not sure my feet were ever any warmer with them then without them. As far as I am concerned they were worthless. If they weren't a Christmas present I would have returned them but it was almost a year from Christmas to hunting season before I used them. I use toe warmers. I put a pair under my toes and on top so they are in a toe warmer sandwich. This works great. -

2019 HuntingNY Gun Harvest Thread
ApexerER replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
Slow morning on the lease today and less shots around than I ever remember hearing. Didn't hear the first shot this morning until after 7 which is for sure a record. 1 guy got a doe this morning. Most didn't even have any siteings including myself. I sat the stand this morning that I have shot every buck I have ever killed on the lease out of and saw nothing. Changed it up for the afternoon and went to the oak ridge that I spent a ton of time on during bow and saw alot of deer. At 4 o'clock or so I was just thinking that it is amazing that the deer know its gun season like a light switch and you just stop seeing them. As soon as I thought that I catch movement to my right and see a deer. He come almost under me and its a button buck. Just feeling happy to not be skunked and 2 minutes later this guy comes out of the brush 60 yds directly in front of me. He turns broadside, get the crosshairs on his shoulder...squeeze the trigger and click. Wth? Did I forget to chamber a round I think to myself for a second. I cycle the action on my BAR and a shell pops out. The deer starts to run from the sound and I yell and he stops as I again get the crosshairs on his shoulder and boom. He plows 5 feet and expired. Checked the ejected shell and the primer was dimpled on the Remington Corelok- 48 replies
