  1. Here's another tip for ASP. If you're not hunting opening week of the NY season. After the PA season opens, the area along the state line can be very good. The pressure in PA tends to chase the deer back across the state line and you can see improved hunting on both sides of the main East/ West road in the Park when this happens. There's good access all along the state line; Wolf Run, Coon Run, Dry Brook and Trail #3 all being very good places to start.
  2. Something to consider! In the most recent issue of 'American Hunter', the NRA endorsed Palladino. I believe they said he's a life member. They also mentioned Cuomo's anti-gun agenda.
  3. I have a Double Bull pop up. I've tried it several times but haven't seen any deer from it. But, a couple of years back we'd seen a large buck crossing a logging trail in the woods. I set the blind up in the open about 20 feet off of the trai. I was expecting the buck to come by but instead a large bear came down a game trail on the hill. I figured if he turned left or right on the logging trail that he was mine at about 10 yds. Instead he crossed the logging road and kept coming towards the blind. I didn't want to try shooting a bear in the head with the bow. When he got to 12 feet I hollered at him in my loudest voice and told him to get out of there. He turned around like a cat and went up the hill where he came from. That's my blind experience and that bear acted like he never saw it.
  4. When I was a kid my dad encouraged me to get a 6mm/ .243 to use on woodchucks. It is a light recoiling gun and with it I was able to shoot a lot and not worry about getting beat up. With it I was able to develop confidence in my shooting and get the attitude that "I am not going to miss" which I believe is key to shooting accurately. With it I also got an interest in reloading an continue now 40+ years later. One of my sons now has a .243 which he shoots quite well. He has taken deer, coyotes and foxes with it. All of my sons are grown and in their 20's and none have any interest at all in shooting my 7mm Rem mag. My recommendation for a new shooter is to go with the .243 or even better yet a .22 to learn shooting fundamentals with. Shooting opportunities are much greater with a .22 without the big boom etc. of the center fire guns. And, its much easier to find a place to shoot safely with a .22. Indoor ranges may even be available in your area.
  5. At work we have a requirement that any time you are climbing more than 6 feet above the ground you must have a full body harness and continuous protection or if on a ladder must maintain three- point contact at all times. I have a hunting partner who fell from his stand and ended up with a broken back, broken ribs and a punctured lung. This happened about 10 years ago and though healed, the problems have come back to cause him significant pain. I know others who have fallen and been injured as well. All of my family now attaches their harness to the ladder or tree at the ground and by using dual connecting devices is connected all the way up and down, climbing into and out of the stand and while up there. It's just so easy to have an accident it doesn't make sense not to wear a harness and be protected 100% of the time. Do I think the state has to mandate that we wear them full time - NO. Just my opinion.
  6. Try Lehman's in Ohio. The sell everything 'non-electric'. They have a great store to visit and a website too. Those refrigerators are expensive. Be careful with them and make sure they're vented properly. Spiders like to build nests in the vent. I once ended up in the hospital and the camp owner and I both experienced the effects of carbon monoxide poisoning. I don't recall if anyone else mentioned it but you might check with an RV dealer for a smaller sized frig if that would be adequate.
