Yeah, the gun was on my lap. D'oh. The house issue is less of a concern. I'm basically set up along a wooded area jutting out into a hay field. There is a lot of open space. For the most part, it's safe shooting, but there are a couple of short angles where it's not safe. I think I've got a working trail cam, I should set up during the week and see what I see I guess.

CNY rifle ranges? >100 yards

That is perfect. 25 minutes from my house. Thanks! -
I live close to the Cayuga Sportman's Club, which is a great club with a nice little rifle range that's about 100 yards. I'm looking for something longer range though. Anything come to mind near Auburn/Ithaca/Syracuse?

My first ever gun season. Found some private land to hunt, set up a nice little spot to sit in, and kind of let my mind wander. About 20 minutes into sitting against a fence, this 8 point beauty comes to about 15 ft away from me. I don't move. I'm beyond excited. Two problems. 1) my rifle is not up; and 2) in the line of sight is a house behind the buck. So, I'm obviously not shooting at him right like that, but I'm wondering. Would you have moved and raised your rifle? By the time I was able to raise my rifle without fear of being busted, he was way too far away for my iron sight. So, what can I learn from this? Should I have raised the rifle and got a shot off as he moved away from the houses, or was I right to sit there petrified and do nothing but enjoy how close I got? Next question, what are the chances of repeating that performance? Should I go back to the same spot, or pick a new ambush spot? I've got about 50 acres to work with here, maybe more.

I'm not an expert but I heard that if you burn the tick, it will vomit and increase your chances of getting lyme's.

Definitely no bucks in Cayuga County. None at all. Better off going somewhere else.

That's the one I was thinking of, I believe. Anyone been there? Is it worth the cost?

Thanks. I was stone cold starring at him, so I wonder if that set him off. I wonder about the pee because it seems like he sniffed or snorted a couple time before hopping off.

Awesome buck. You're a pro now.

For a variety of reasons, I deer hunt from the ground. I went out Sunday and within 10-15 minutes a young buck wandered pretty close somewhere from the side of the logs I was hiding behind. I saw him first, but was caught in an awkward position, sort of kneeling with my crossbow not up. I was certainly within range, but hadn't really decided whether to shoot and if so how to do it without spooking him. But to my surprise, he seemed like he either saw me or smelled me pretty quickly and hopped off. This raised raised a couple questions for me. like: 1) what do you do when a deer busts you? 2) what can I do from the ground to do a better job of staying concealed? (ok, peeing about a minute earlier probably didn't help) 3) should I bother to come back to that same spot? On the one hand, I know there are a lot of deer there. On the other hand, at least one of them has met me before.

Isn't there a place in CNY where you can buy pheasants and they put them out in the field for you to hunt? I remember someone mentioning a place like that around the finger lakes, but I can't find it online or remember the name of it. Looking for a place to get my pup onto some birds. Thanks

Thanks for the heads up. I'm aware and will follow the law.

I'm on a tight budget and am looking for a used 12 gauge that could be good for all purpose use. I really like the Mossberg 835 or Rem 870 variants. This would be used for hunting pheasant, turkey, deer, grouse and anything else that feels like jumping in front of it. Not looking for anything fancy, but if you've got a decent beginner gun that is sitting in your safe and you'd rather have $100-200 instead, let me know. Thanks.

This Sunday I took my Chesapeake pup pheasant hunting for the first time. When I say I took him hunting, what I mean is that I went hunting and he came along. We walked a great distance, plodded through grass up to my head. He just stayed close behind for the most part. First, we found a pile of pheasant feathers, so I thought that's a good sign. We pushed ahead a bit more and flushed out a bird. Now, I'm still new to hunting in general, and I've never gone pheasant hunting before, so I was pretty thrilled to even see something. I took aim with my trusty 20ga single shot break action full choke shotgun. Missed. Oh well. Still had a great time. Puppy didn't give a rat's ass about the shotgun going off, so I was pleased with that. We walked around a bit more, got lost in the woods, and made our way home. Slept like a baby that night, both of us.
