  1. Sorry I probably should have clarified for the engineer... behind everything that has to do with hunting gear. I thought that is what we were talking about... I like to stay on one subject at a time.
  2. Logging would be a big help, but I would hate to see the big woods overrun by every hunyak in the state. They would need a new special government force just to help find all the lost wannabees.
  3. There is a multi million dollar industry behind everything that has to do with hunting, so why pick on the crossbow. The same people that pushed compound bows, and inline muzzleloaders are pushing crossbows by your logic. The truth is that there can only be a multi-million dollar business if hunters are very interested in buying and using the item. Hunters seem to like the idea of a crossbow in NY
  4. Sorry but I fail to see the logic... and for the record there are a great many compound bow hunters that can shoot and do shoot 45 yards, some out to 60. Just because you drive a train doesn't mean you're logical
  5. What does that have to do with your hunting experience? Are you saying you're afraid some other hunter might kill your deer? So, we should hope for less NY hunters and start ear tagging deer with the name of the hunter who the deer belongs to? Hunters let deer walk every day, kill deer every day, and miss deer everyday with rifles let alone compounds and crossbows. I don't quite get your point. So, we're going to hate crossbows because they kill deer?
  6. This is what you commented on originally "As a traditional bow hunter I haven't been able to figure out how having crossbow hunters in the woods is a disadvantage to me. I'm pretty sure the deer don't consciously choose to walk in front of just crossbow hunters and by-pass all the other bow hunters." Nothing about change there that I can see... Really the only thing we've gotten to here is that you view hunting as a competition with other hunters, and that in the end you agree that we just need to adapt and go on... with an awful lot of nonsense posts in between. And, like an idiot I fell for it!
  7. So you've been arguing a point that gets you back to exactly what I said in the first place? What a waste of time.
  8. I have said nothing of the sort.. just that the numbers are negligible. My point was that I hasn't impacted my hunting experience as a trad bow hunter.. you are the one that turned it into a competition.
  9. Then if the implement is not the issue ... you would be against ANY new compound or trad bow hunters being introduced into the archery season?
  10. Sure... and I acknowledged that you view hunting as a competition... What is the problem?
  11. Then your math assumes that every crossbow hunter is a new hunter that didn't bow hunt before.. that is simply not the case. The increase in new hunters state wide is so small that new hunters per any given area would be minimal
  12. Competition from other hunter may be your reality... not mine.
  13. That has been an issue way before the introduction of crossbows... crossbows hasn't made it any worse. Believe it or not most crossbow hunters are compound hunters that like the idea of using a crossbow if they can... not all bowhunters are members of that "elite" self rightious group of bowhunters
  14. So how does it personally interfere with your bowhunting experience? Most compound shooters have more range and accuracy than me after 20 yards, but it doesn't affect my bowhunting experience in the least.
  15. If a hunter is concerned about competition from other hunters then he is hunting for all the wrong reasons IMO
  16. As a traditional bow hunter I haven't been able to figure out how having crossbow hunters in the woods is a disadvantage to me. I'm pretty sure the deer don't consciously choose to walk in front of just crossbow hunters and by-pass all the other bow hunters.
  17. Put some orange on it. Better safe than sorry. Even though they shouldn't be shooting into your land doesn't mean they won't. The bullet doesn't care it will kill you just the same.
  18. 3 miles is like going from the couch to the refrigerator for a whitetail
  19. Unless the deer density is very high in that area or you have done some significant scouting on deer travel patterns there... you might sit the rest of your life before you see a deer. Take it from someone who has hunted the ADK big woods for 35 years... waiting for a whitetail in the ADK's is the least productive way to deer hunt. Believe me when I say you may be their the rest of your life before you see a deer, let alone a buck. Walking and glassing is probably your best bet.
  20. Glassing could be fun. But, unless your prepared to take very long risky shots your chance of success will be about the same as just walking through the woods willy-nilly. Without snow or wet leaves to keep your footfalls hidden walking in the big woods is like strapping an amplifier to your back and cranking rap music. Try still hunting as quietly as possible and using a deer call every now and then. Stay on top of the ridges for the best view and shot opportunities unless you know of a dark, dank hemlock piece where the big bucks might hole up. I have rousted many a big buck in those hemlocks with my grunt tube.
  21. Based on molar dentine that deer is at least 6.5. and I'm going to say more like 7.5.- 8.5 because of the excessive wear and tooth loss.
  22. I have noticed that rather than spend the time actually looking for the deer themselves young hunters are just calling the dog guy. As for the poor shot choices... many of the younger guys are getting into that " I need to kill a buck at all costs" mentality. I can hear it in there voices when I talk to them and in the thousands of comments I read on social media. I don't get too upset because I'm sure I was that guy when I was in my 20's. Unfortunately for them there are not enough volunteers with dogs to keep up with the demand. Bill Yox ( a Deer Search volunteer) wrote a nice post on on of the social media pages telling all about how they can't keep up with the calls they have gotten this year. Losing a nice buck to a poor shot choice sometimes is the best way to bring a hunter to his senses.
