  1. I didn't try calling. I don't think I have used a call for deer in years, never had much luck with them. There's another spot on this track that's more open. There's some wet lands and thick stuff around that that gets used as a bedding area, but even during bow season, it's get a good amount of pressure. Once the gun season it gets worse. This land gets a lot of grouse hunters as well, so I take my orange hat in when bow hunting and hang it close by so they know I am there, it's not optimal for bow hunting, but it beats taking a load of bird shot.
  2. Because throwing water ballots at Democrats is frowned upon.
  3. Thanks. You're a deer killing machine, you have what, 3 down so far. I was just trying to express, that hunting deep might get into some thick areas, and you should be prepared.
  4. Well, it sort of is. The private land I have access to in the lower Dacks is like that. I have a few spots set up that are only maybe 70 yards from the road. Almost always see deer in that area. Usually does, does with fawns, and button bucks. They rarely even care we are in there. They just mosey on by. Not a great set up for bow season in that spot though, green up keeps me from seeing much, once the leaves fall and the regular season starts, it's a great spot. Two creeks, and when they logged it a few years ago it made even more natural funnels heading back to the only bedding area that's left up there. So, yeah, what you said makes sense to me. Just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Just different land. I do put my time in, just don't/can't hunt as hard as many on here. I only have about 15 days in between bow and regular seasons so far since 10/1. I did break it up a bit and I have a few small game hunting days in as well. I guess it is what it is. I blame no one but me, I decided to focus on two specific areas this season down here in the SZ near me. Live and learn, if you aren't out there you, well, you aren't out there.
  5. The best way to hunt public land is to go where others won't go. Hike up higher or deeper then most of the masses, get there before the masses get there. Depending on the land, this is a serious double edged sword. If you want to be where others aren't, that sometimes means hunting some nasty thick areas. I got set up this morning around 6AM with legal shooting time at 6:50 for me. Really wasn't any sunrise because it was over cast with a storm front moving in this after noon. I could see about 60 yards to my left, right, and in front of me. Low brush and thickets beyond. I saw deer moving through the brush ahead of me, but even with binos, I could not make out what they were. I try hard not to let the frustrations of hunting mainly public land get the best of me. Today, it did. I gave up around 9AM, walked back out to the trail and headed for my vehicle. I want to add, please do not tell me to buy a tree stand and get 20-30 feet up a tree, or even 10-15. If you read my thread about a spending a week in the Adirondacks, you should understand that I have a massive fear of heights these days.
  6. Congrats! Waiting to see pics, and hoping grampy got that long shot he was hoping for.
  7. The week we spent up north may not have been a 100% hunting trip, but we made the usual cabin fare with a couple different meals tossed in. First night we went out due to the drive up and getting settled. Tuesday night I made some 100% beef Boar's Head knockwurst and Boar's Head sauerkraut cooked on top of the wood stove. Wednesday night my wife made home made dutch oven jalapeno cheddar bread and home made beef stew. Thursday night we did meatball subs and salad. Friday night was homemade chili and I made jalapeno bannock. Saturday night it was steaks cooked on the wood stove and fried potatoes and onions. The meatball subs were my idea and actually made for a nice hearty meal on a chilly night.
  8. Uh............. Yeah........ I would rather strip down and use my boxer briefs then my gloves. I hate cold hands, especially if you have to "go again".
  9. Really you two? Really! STOP! JUST STOP! The issue that keeps resonating in my head is the time lapse from when it happened, to a month later when the news picked it up. That there's some damn fine news reporting, and fast too.
  10. That was my thinking as well. Still odd this guys not been busted. The Long Lake area isn't actually bustling with suburbs. Gut tells me he's local so shouldn't be taking this long to grab him up. Maybe he bought a few boxes of Just For Men after realizing he was sort of a wanted man.
  11. Don't have bibs, the wife did suggest we both get some, told her it would help keep the body warm, but hot hands for the win in boots for cold feet. I layer, I also make sure the layers are big enough to fit over each other, but not be tight. A pair of long john pants first, then a pair of sweat pants on the bottom, Top, tee shirt, long sleeve tee shirt, high neck long sleeve tee shirt, and a sweat shirt. Once where I'm going, the sweat shirt comes off, and a mid layer of either fleece or another I picked up recently, then my coat. Bottom, another pair of sweat pants and then my outer shell pants. Body and legs rarely get cold. It's my hands and feet I struggle with. Had to actually use a pair of Hot hands this past Sunday, something I haven't had to do in a couple years. A couple years ago I got a pair of $200 Kamik boots for less then a hundred bucks due to a sears store closing and liquidating everything. Boots are rated to -40*, yeah maybe when walking. Hunting from the ground once it freezes and gets snow, it's always been a hassle to keep my feet warm. Same with my wife. I thought of a solution to that that may just help a bit. I suggested we buy a couple light hang on stands, and just put them a foot or so off the ground. My thoughts are getting our feet off the cold ground and out of the snow should help. I think I might try that Hot Hands under the hat trick this weekend.
  12. One would think with that clear of a picture he would have been caught by now. Article says it happened on 10/12, that's a month ago. To bad even when they snag this moron he will most likely only get a warning, or maybe a small fine. Should me minimum of a year in the slammer.
  13. Yeah, curious minds want to know. Where you hunting now and where you have that homestead set up?
  14. Dude, you got this! Just need a deer to show up and it's a dead deer.
  15. Diggin those blue jeans bionic! I picked up a nice red plaid jacket and will be going old school a few times this year wearing that and blue jeans.
  16. Nope, but this past Sunday I did see 13 bull elk dancing the Macerena while I hunting the Adirondacks. It was EPIC!
  17. Well, been out twice already rifle hunting. Opening day NZ was in Siamese Ponds carrying my Savage Axis Stainless in .25-06. This morning the wife was carrying that up north, while I was carrying my Howa 1500 in 7MM-08 in the lower Dacks. But, for the SZ opener on Saturday? I'll be sitting that out. Down in the south I only have access to public land, and even I have grown tired of the WW3 empty the gun on any running deer that goes on on most public land in the SZ on the opener. If I were to go out, I would carry the Savage though.
  18. I miss you like I would miss moths eating my camping gear. LOL! I made my comment about you because I figured even you would have something more constructive to add to this then a couple of people who replied. I wasn't wrong. You actually added something to this thread, not just brow bashing.
  19. Inline. Actually looking at the Traditions Buckstalker right now. But not in a hurry to buy anything. I loved my time out with the bow. I wouldn't hesitate to hunt that way again now that I have had some boots on the ground in the area. Just leaning towards putting the odds more in my favor, as you said. Also, as anyone who hunts up that way knows, it can be thicker then the line to the rest rooms on New Years Eve in a lot of areas. Over all, it's just a decision I made. I really don't care what the brown liquor sippers think.
  20. I probably won't. LOL. Just going to get up and go if it's not raining. As always, I thank you for your words of wisdom oh "Grand Master Of Snarkiness". I will sleep better knowing I have your approval on what works for me. No, really! You're approval means a lot to me! Betting even Storm comes up with a better post, I see him sniffing down in the who's looking areas of this thread.
  21. Huh? Delmar is classified as Albany by those of who live out this way. Voorheesville is nothing like Delmar. I have never looked for deer in Delmar, but I can attest to seeing some bruisers in the early mornings driving RT85 to go to Shop Rite in Slingerlands before season. I have also seen some really nice bucks just before exit 23 going into Delmar, and even past that in the fields by the soccer place, I think it's exit 21 ( I don't travel highways much, so this one might be off ).
