  1. I use Remington Sluggers with out a problem, harvest every deer under 60 yards as well and nothing like slugs will put a deer down with so much force. Don't waste your money on a rifled barrel and a scope not to mention that the sabots cost 12$ for 5 shells compared to 5$ for 5 shells or 14$ for a 15 shell pack of Remington Sluggers, just use an improved or modified choke with slugs never use a full or turkey choke.

  2. No Cabelas close by, closest Bass Pro is in Auburn 50 miles away from me, I'll check out Dicks and Gander when Turkey Season comes around, maybe by then Gander will have them available online too.

  3. Is Hevi-shot and tungston safe for every barrel?  I use either Winchester or Remington Copper plated ammo. Whichever is cheaper that April. Just 1 box of 10. Like alot of hunters here--- I get new ammo before each Spring and fire off some of the older ones at targets or old phone books.

I'm pretty sure that Hevi-Shot is safe in most modern shotguns and chokes, but as for older guns i'm not sure.

  4. They do???

No, all ammunition is prohibited to home delivery in New York state, i was saying they should allow Bird loads to be delivered to home address.

  5. I don't shop at the big box's for fun stuff but My local guy orders them for me and has them in 2-3 days. Heavy blend is what I use but have used the 13 with the same success.

New York's Law on online ammunition order sucks, at least they could allow Bird loads to be bought and delivered to home.

  6. Try longbeard also.It patterns out of my 870 better and flat out rolls em.I used to shot Heviblends but switched to longbeard only because they patterned a little better, but hevi shot is bad azz stuff!!!

Unless Winchester plans on making load for 20 gauge, i won't be able to use Long Beards.

  7. Even though it kills me to say it i'm gonna spend the extra cash and try Hevi Shot this year, figure a lot of hunters had great results with it and hope i do too. Where do you guys buy it? online or in store? i imagine closer to turkey season it will be on the shelves of most sporting good stores but i can't seem to find any 20 Gauge Hevi Shot on Gander Mountain's site and Dick's Sporting Goods won't let you order online. Another question, Hevi-Shot 13 or Mag Blends?

  8. I've killed my 3 birds with Win XX and Rem Nitro my shots are limited to 30 or less yards, and I'm sure that the lead loads have the same results at 30 yards (dead birds), was looking at least to get out to 45 yards but probably wont be able to unless i spend the money for Hevi loads, agree wish the Long Beards were in 20 gauge heard they have awesome performance in 12 ga.

  9. That's why I said "IF" you use 2-3. I have never shot a turkey over 25 yds and don't plan on it. If I shoot a couple 15 and like what I see I'll shoot at 25 then I know I'm good. In my opinion if your shooting much over 25 you shouldn't be using a 20ga and any of the turkey loads will kill at that range but in my 15 years of killing 40-45 turkeys I have found nothing that kills them like the Hevi's. I still buy a couple boxes of the new stuff that comes out and haven't found one that tops them yet. I would love to see winchester make the long beard for the 20's because they patter very well in my 12 but haven't killed a bird with them yet as I almost always carry my little 20's.

  10. And Remington Sluggers have also killed a lot of deer. How many still use them with the performance of higher standard sabots/slugs today? Nevermind, you asked for our opinion and choose not to value it. Not saying lead won't kill em dead but there's better alternatives for velocity, pattern density, range and energy. Tool around on Oldgobbler.com for awhile and ask around.

I never said i didn't value anyone's advise, i already stated i didn't want to spend a lot on 5 shells, i did ask what you prefer but i was simply asking just to see what others like for lead loads.

And actually the Remington Sluggers are all i use for deer hunting and are very effective out to 70 yards (or more never tested) I've killed lots of deer with them and tagged 2 this year with just Rem Sluggers

  11. You can never know how many shells you need for practice, saying "3 shots is all you need" is unethical, you need to know your effective range and be comfortable with those ranges and 3 shell will not accomplish that unless you only have one range, pellet count and placement can vary on chokes and ranges.

  12. I was wondering what type of turkey loads other hunters prefer that use a 20 Gauge (if you use other gauge feel free to leave comment) I've tried Winchester Double x and Remington Nitro with poor results 10 pellets head/neck area at 30 yards, I'm gonna try a new choke and gonna try out Federal Premium High Velocity Turkey loads, never could bring my self to spend 20$+ on Hevi-shot.

  13. I try to get out at least 3 days a week some times 4 days a week i hunt northern and southern zones, this year has been good to me got a 3 pointer and a doe, got nothing last year. Rut must have came early or bucks were only active at night, hoped for snow but haven't gotten any wasted money on winter camo and would be a lot easier for tracking deer and to figure out their pattern, with this nice warm weather more people have been hunting.

  14. Me and my Pop sat this morning but not much activity, so my father walked a trail on a ridge between thick brier and a pond (its a mess in there) and i walked up some power lines and walked into the thick briers and swamps on the other side of my father and walked up ridge towards my father, anyways my dad had one shot chance for a huge 10 point buck i kicked out of the swamp and briers below him the buck ran up the ridge and stopped on the trail but dad never had a shot by the time he realized it was there. but good to see there's a good one in there and plenty more also lots of tree rubs in the swamps i counted 10 alone today fairly fresh too.

  15. Some good tree rubs on 4 inch round pines, and some other smaller rubs, almost had a chance at a doe but she was in a hurry some where, seen 3 other deer uncertain if there were any bucks but grass and thorns are so high you cant see nothing besides a huge whitetail waving good bye.

  16. Cut what? Welfare costs?

I know not too long ago Cuomo cut DEC funding by 50 some million dollars i wonder what that was used on? and those deer in overpopulated areas would be great for family's on welfare.

  17. What's funny is that relocation would be a huge burden on the taxpayer. Shooting them is definitely the answer, but you are correct in that politics often stand in the way.

You can't honestly tell me that if NYS and DEC cuts some stuff they couldn't afford it in their budget which is billions of dollars.

  18. You would support the DEC or any authority having the power to force landowners to allow people on their land to hunt?????????

Do you have any idea of the cost to trap, transfer and release deer - let alone the stress involved to the animal?

Thinking outside the box is one thing.

A 60's trip on the purple tabs is another.

I never said i supported people hunting on landowners land i simply asked is that what you want or another way to thin the herd and giving them birth control is unnatural, i guess those people like their deer too much to kill them.
