  8. The guy that invented did it for that reason...seems he was in a restaurant one day and was packing. A little kid saw his weapon and proceeded to make a big fuss of the fact he had a gun which prompted him to invent this one.
  9. It is a new generation...I grew up hunting, fishing, and trapping with my Dad. It was a way of life for us and for most near us. I learned at a very young age that hunting was part of me and it was something I wanted to do the rest of my life. I have tried to get a number of young people into it and while some showed interest more often than not they did not keep hunting for a number of reasons like lack of support from parents, peer pressure, no way to pay for it, etc. etc. I have two grown daughters and neither one of them showed any interest in hunting or any outdoor activities as much as I tried. They were exposed their whole life and to this day don't hunt, fish, x-country ski, or camp. Camping for them is in a Hotel. I mentored a few young people through the DEC mentoring program and only one hunts to this day. Most found other things they liked to do better or just do not have the drive to pursue it.
  10. Are you kidding me????? Restaurants, coffee shops, and other public services have been ruled against when it comes to discriminating to who they can sell to and a bank is able to pick & choose who they lend money to based on the type of business. I bet a drug dealer could go in and borrow money to finance his operation and get away with it. What is wrong with this country. Rights only apply to some of the people not all of the people as intended.
  11. NOT TODAY...HAVE A 10 DEGREE WINDCHILL HERE TODAY! Have a few on the road that shoot but never at the same time or together. Happens all the time almost daily in Rochester!! On Friday even the cops joined in!!
  12. Just my opinion.....While practicing is very important I would have to say the best way to measure proficiency is whether or not one comes home with the game he/she is hunting. Practice hopefully makes you a better shot and puts you in condition to make the shot but if the shot can't be made at the moment of truth one isn't very proficient. I know a couple of guys that can shoot paper targets and 3d targets all day long but when it comes time to shoot a deer they choke and either miss or get a bad hit.
  13. Larry I made my statement based on fact. I am a NY state licensed nuisance control operator and am constantly getting calls from people that got my number from the DEC. More often than not the people calling have an issue that is not within the authority of the license. When I ask them if they explained to the DEC the nature of their problem their answer is almost always "yes and they gave me your number to take care of it" Just Monday I received a call from a guy that lives on Honeoye Lake. Apparently a deer got hit on the road and went across his property and died just a few feet from the lake. He was looking for someone to remove it and called the DEC. They gave him my number. Removing deer.....dead or alive does fall under the authority of the license. I am not knocking the DEC...just saying quite often they don't give the correct information.
  14. True the first shot counts...but if you can't shoot a group how can you be confident in that "first" shot.
  15. Larry 302 Btw I have hunted Ontario county for close to 30 years , near the old Creekside gun shop, you close ? Not to far away...about 7 miles west in West Bloomfield. You have a pretty nice area to hunt. Has to be some bruisers that hang out there especially along that creek. Boy I miss Creekside Gunshop...pretty pricey but always a nice place to go.
  16. I usually start shooting one to three times a week in mid to late Aug. primarily to get the arms back & shoulders in shape. I have a foam bale and use balloons. I blow them up to the size I want and stick 5 or 6 to the bale. I move the bale around after each round of shooting so I am never shooting the same distance or the same target(balloon)more than one round. I measure my proficiency on how many balloons I hit or how close I get to the balloon. Once I am consistently hitting the balloon I blow them up smaller like 3-4" and practiceaway. I also shoot off my deck which is 10-12 feet above the yard so it is almost like shooting from a treestand...plus if it is hot I can have a toddy. I blow the balloons up with a shot from the compressor to the desired diameter. By shooting at a different balloon every time it cuts down on damaged arrows, ripped fletching, broken knocks, etc. and improves my accuracy. I usually limit my shots to 25 yards or less because I find that over that I struggle hitting the balloons consistently. I can hit them on a regular basis but not as often as I would like and as far as I am concerned 30+ yds. in the woods is a long shot with a bow. Balloons are cheap and easy to pick up when I am done. Hardly ever shoot at ground level since most of my bow hunting is from a treestand.
  17. Another source would be the local town highway departments. Some towns have the highway dept. pick them up OR have someone on contract to pick them up. I wouldn't rely on the DEC to much...at least in region 8. They are constantly giving out wrong information to the public.
  18. 3/26 we were in the southern tier and drove a good section of Catherine creek one of the big trout streams in the state. The creek was extremely low for this time of year I suspect due to lack of snow melt. I doubt Naples will be in in much better shape. Might have to fish the holes and hope for the best. If you go good luck!
  19. I use a inexpensive Simmons primarily for bow season but find it useful during gun season on occasion. Easy to carry & light weight. It is nice to know how far it is from point A to point B and how far the shot was.
