Being prudent is the key. I've lived in Florida since 1976 and have been through several hurricanes. We keep window coverings handy, and can slap them up in an hour. I have extra propane, batteries, tarps, generator, etc. Food and water are stocked and vehicles gassed up when first mention of storms are made. I have had power go out occasionally, but it is usually back on by the next day. Besides that, the area that I now live in is quite high (for Florida) in elevation at 180' above sea level.
