  1. Out in 3g before work this AM. Cold and light but swirling wind. Around 8 two nice does started a slow feed in towards me. Was waiting to see if a 6 that had been hanging with them joined them for breakfast. No sight of him. They fed to about 60 and ducked behind a fallen oak. Lost them in the brush. Gave them 30 minutes and was convinced they had disappeared into thin air.

Get up to go to leave and go to work. Take three steps on the leaves and two flags bound off for the distance. Oh well, had to pay the bills so no choice. Great morning regardless.

Pulled cams last night. Have a few bucks returning to the property and checking out the does. One nice 9 is back but he is still staying solo and nocturnal.

Might hit public tonight if I can get out early enough. Good luck to all.

  2. Your dogs are gorgeous!
In college (many many moons ago) I helped raise a yellow lab seeing eye pup, Rosa.
We all secretly wanted her to fail so we could keep her.
These same old roommates of ours who like my wife and I are still together now with kids, just started training another guide dog...so fulfilling but so tough to let go!
    Thanks very much.

If you are interested, take a look at fostering a brood or stud that they are breeding. You take care of them while they are in the breeding program and when they are retired you get first dibs to keep them as your pet. Much easier than getting attached to and having to give up the puppies. They are fantastic dogs and it has given great life lessons for my boys. They also invite you to the graduation ceremony of your dog's pups when they are paired with a sight impaired person. It is very moving. I can give you any details you need if you are interested.

They are easily the smartest and best behaved dogs I have ever been around.

  3. Two labs for us. Both from guiding eye breeding program. Pepsi, the yellow, is ten and yielded 18 service dogs. Ikea, the black, is 18 months and getting ready to be bred for the next generation of service dogs.

    Fantastic members of the family.

  4. Went for early morning pre-work sit in 3g. Cold and swirling winds. No movement during sit. Pulled cards and got into a staredown with a Doe that I didn't see in brush before I pulled last card. Continued our staredown for about twenty minutes then she boogied with her Fawn. No shot opportunity.

Nice to see some daytime movement. Back out tonight.

  5. Still hadn't received tags (but I received DMPs). I called DEC and they said to go into town clerk to get them reprinted free of charge. Went into town clerk. First visit she told me system was down and to come back later. Came back later and she told me that I should get them in the mail. I told her I know, but this year's hasn't come. She said that they hadn't mailed them yet. I told her she was wrong and explained what the DEC said.

She told me she was going to charge me for the reprint. I told her no, there is no charge. She called the DEC and they told her there is no charge since I never received my tags. She finally printed them out and gave them to me no charge, including reprints of the doe tags that I had already received in the mail.

    Our tax dollars at work.

  6. From Montauk... Striped bass was in typical August doldrums. Slow pick from the July full moon, anything caught was good sized though. Picked up with this past weekend's full moon. Lots of bait in the water.

May hit again this weekend if I can get out. Will post if I do.

  7. Recommendations for charters in no order:

    At Montauk Marine Basin:
    Blue Crush Charters
    Elizabeth II
    Professional Cryer
    Sea Wife

    At Westlake Marina:
    Suzie E
    November Rain

Google them to get their details and give them a call. Each captain is a little different so you can shop around for what's the best fit. My son says each sets out regularly and comes back with happy customers.

Fishing has slowed down a bit over last few weeks inshore, but expect it to pick back up with full moon this weekend.

Tarheel, I'd like to hear any charter suggestions you have. Been itching for a fall trip.

  8. Yeah. My experience with the mates in Montauk has been more hit or miss recently. (As Montauk has changed so has the people working there.) I took second place in the pool on a recent night bass trip and the mate gave us attitude before handing over the money saying it is typical to tip out of the pool. We both told him this wasn't our first rodeo and knew the deal. We let the captain know and I think that was the last trip for that mate.

I'll post some recommendations on charters to check out. My son works a local marina there and can tell who has been putting fish on the deck.

  9. Agreed on Viking fleet. They run dailies for cod I believe and have another boat that I believe does multi day trips out to George's bank for overnighters, I think also targeting tile, hake and others.

I believe Miss Montauk and Ebb Tides flip to cod in the winters as well, but I don't know if they fish as regularly as the Vikings. Fished the miss and would recommend. Never been on the ebb tides.

If you are looking for a charter instead I can give you a couple to call when you are ready.

  10. Been years since I went for Cod out of Montauk. Latest I have done recently is a post Thanksgiving striper trip once herring came in. Reports have looked solid for the past few years, but I have zero desire to be that cold again. If you need advice on a head boat to go out on let me know.

  11. Took the train back from Montauk yesterday afternoon. 80 degrees, humid, broad daylight and big buck bachelor groups out munching on browse and landscaping in people's back yards next to the train tracks. It is crazy. They know they are safe.

  12. You betcha. The little guy was cleaning the boat while we filleted. They then helped me vacuum pack the fillets and salted/smoked the mackerel.

They'll be ready when they have kids of their own.

Nice and you got him filleting too! Solid haul!
