  1. A farmer friend told me that local raised corn won't grow, because of being dried down to 12% moisture, that kills the germ . The TS store gets their corn from the midwest where is doesn't need drying, thus it will grow. It's also a hybrid so, you take your chances. Grow proved how well it will do.
  2. Thats a great idea. Helping the wildlife out during stressful times, not to mention going green and recycling.
  3. What I thought to be 3 black bears running straight at my stand, 3 little arrows in my quiver, and thinking it was all over for me; I had bought the farm. Turned out to be a neighbors loose black angus cows. ( It was a little foggy) Always bring your glasses! Not to mention, I had to quit a little earlier that evening.
  4. If you go on "Turkey Harvest" on the bottom of that page, go to Turkey Management link. It explains in detail about each part of the state. It's nice to see good numbers in your part of the state. Our NW part of the state just doesn't have good numbers of turkey, and the harvest data supports that. The season starts here on the second week of bow season, and most of the archers, I know, get turkey tags. I won't harvest a hen or jakes , figuring the numbers might rise. About 50% of those archers will take a turkey, like wise with deer, given the chance. The DEC should close fall hen harvest here, to get numbers up. With the Spring we had this year, those numbers will. no doubt, fall more.
  5. I've been thinking of using them , but understand their hard on a Whisker Biscuit's life.
  6. You did a nice job on those plots. Look like you've got a deer magnet there. Did someone mention Broccolli Rape & ( deer ) sausage on the grill,
  7. Here are some answers. My son always gets the turkey survey. I have yet to see one and have been hunting turkeys the same number of years together. Fall Turkey Take by County - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation.htm
  8. That backup bow idea sounds great to me, but how do you get it past the spouse? Look what I found by the road today, Hun.
  9. Some pics, lighting was tough. Top are morning pics. The hall was huge. Their were hundreds of people there for the awards banquet but, downloads won't cooperate to show.
  10. I would say most of the WMU's were well represented. To me, it looks like the trend is growing towards larger racks in N.Y.S.. At least the ones I saw. Maybe attending the BBC awards, just makes it seem that way, don't know ? I'm sure Joe knows the answer. They say a picture holds a thousand words, well their are millions in that "Record Book." Really pumps up the old blood, a month to the day, when bow starts!
  11. There were also black bears there. Those full mounts sure looked real and were nicely done. The bears rugs were great. We don't get a chance to get that close to many bears on the west side of the state. I try to post some pictures today.
  12. These are not just blinds, their mega blinds. They all look great. What happen to the olde'n days when you went out and sat on a log?
  13. Just returned home from the 2011 awards banquet. First of all, I would like to thank everyone that makes this possible. It must be a huge undertaking to plan and put on such an event. Thank you. The awards presentation was great. It most enjoyable to hear all the humor, and the stories, oh the stories, they were great. The MC did a wonderful job also. Now the trophys, oh those trophys. Never have I seen that amount in one building before. Alot of big deer harvested in 2009, 2010. Everyone was great. Now if you don't have the 16th edition of the Whitetail Record Book, get yourself one. It is the best by far. Beautiful color photos, and tons of stats.
  14. In past years of fall turkey hunting, I've seen plenty of hens and a jake or two, but never a gobbler. They seem to start hanging out on the farm, late October, about the time the woodcocks roll in,and stay to about Thanksgiving. Their in the chickory and clover then and hang out in the back thickets alot. Don't know where the gobblers are?
  15. G-Man give U some great advise, as always. The 2 things that deer detect the most is movement , and scent. An old timer told me many years ago to watch my wind. He was right. No matter how scent free U think you are, U still have scent. An effective way to see more deer is have the wind blowing in your direction," from the deer." Deer always have their noses in the air when the smell isn't right to them. Take some non-scented talc powder with U, and check the wind. If it's blowing toward the deer , move to a new spot. In the woods, the wind can do all kinds of strange things. Test with the powder will show U alot. I use the down of chicken feathers, only because their handy for me. It's all a learning experience. Make it a fun one for yourself, be safe and enjoy.
  16. Now, I've seen everything. A turkey dancing, lol. Looks like her old man is worn out. Thanks for sharing.
  17. Are you talking about DMAP program? That is for landowners with 50+ acres.
  18. Like WNYBuckHunter said, email the DEC for the answer.
  19. My numbers indicate that 8A was 12100 last year, this year 14600, Increase of + 2500. Also 8G includes a huge amount of prime habitat for deer. Not just Genesee county. It picks up 1/3 of Orleans county and runs west into Erie county. A part of Monroe also. I believe that region is one of the largest deer permit areas in the state
  20. This is right up my alley. I used to sell Kioti (Bobcat) tractors, as well as Long-Farmtrac (L.S.) tractors. What hp were you thinking of getting? I know this will probably upset some people, but a UTV is more or less for transportation. Yes U can plow the driveway, and pull one of those discs behind it but, it will never do the quality of work, say a 25 hp compact tractor will do. Their are alot of 3 pt. hitch options that will go behind a tractor and your not committed to one brand. Do alot of research and find a brand U like. Get to know the dealership well, and ask alot of questions. If you lease one, take a real good look at that lease. Their is some special wording in there.
  21. What surprises me is with 50,000+ hunters afield, the DEC received very few responses. How many pheasant hunters received or knew about the this study? Maybe it's time for NY DEC to cooperate with forums like this one, at least for informational purposes.
  22. Anyone plan to do any fall turkey hunting? What are some ways to be successful in the fall? Are turkey numbers going to hinder your hunt? We don't seem have great numbers in our area, so I've elected to film this fall.
