  1. This thread took quite a turn.. I'll be out in Brockport later on today. Plan to stop by the walmart there. I have a buddy looking for blue box Federal 30-06 in 180gr. I'll report back what the ammo scenario looks like there.
  2. A few years back I picked up a Savage MarkIIG that came with a factory scope. I typically sight it in right around 50 yds and am able to get 1.5 inch groups without using a rest. That's using CCI or Federal rounds. I could probably get tighter groups with a rest.
  3. And I thought I was talented when I figured out my kid's lego set...
  4. That's a beauty. Did you buy it as is or as a kit?
  5. Same thing with Sportsman's Warehouse in Henrietta. All ammo is now behind glass.
  6. I agree that I think deer spook more because of our smell and movement than they do because of lights. I carry a small flashlight for walking in the dark and use my hand to cover most of the light. I want just enough so I can see the ground in front me of. There are lots of branches and hickory hulls on my walk and both cause plenty of noise. I feel less likely to blow out the area if I can avoid stepping on those on the way in.
  7. Just got the phone recharged and am catching up.. congrats @The_Real_TCIII and good luck @doebuck1234! A buddy of mine scored in Barker last night on a solid 8pt. Chest girth measured 42"m which put live weight somewhere around 218lbs. I brought my son along and helped skin and quarter the deer. Left there around 9:30 and saw a car strike a deer 5 minutes from my house. seemed like a clean hit on a decent 8pt. I dropped the kid off at home and went back to get the buck. Officer on site gave me a tag for it. My plan was just to check it out, maybe get a little meat and a euro out of it. If the meat was mangled, or smelly or slimy or at all questionable, I'd discard it without question. So when I got it home I opened the hide from the top along the spine and worked my way along. I had no desire to gut the thing. To my surprise, both backstraps, both rear quarters, and one front shoulder were all in perfect shape. I'm guessing I ended up with 40ish pounds of meat and a decent little euro from it. Got done with that around midnight and was awake at 4. In the woods by 6 for a 7:14 sunrise. The wind was chillier than expected and swirled more from the S than the predicted W. Done by 10. Only saw 2 doe feeding in the corn at about 75 yds for about 20 minutes. Brakes on the truck went on the drive home. Started with a grinding a few days ago, but then the brake line popped on the drive home. Front driver's side wheel covered in brake fluid and no pressure in the brake pedal. That'll have me sidelined until I can get that fixed. My mechanic can't get me in until the 18th, but I'll call around.
  8. I'm in! Let me know how to send funds. Are you planning to mail physical tickets?
  9. Pan seared tenderloin over home grown kale sauteed with red pepper and garlic. A side of garlic bread and yuengling to wash it down.
  10. Better yet, keep him around for another week. I'll pick you in my fantasy team and take the points.
  11. I think we can all agree that guns should be properly secured, and that we want our children safe. That's just being a responsible adult. The reason I don't like this ad is because it's purpose is to scare people into thinking that guns pose a threat to their kids. A gun on it's own is no more or less dangerous than a hammer. It's just a tool at the disposal of it's user. But if people are scared and think that guns mean certain doom to their children, that message will be in their thoughts come election time. A more accurate ad would be pitching that people with mental health issues are a leading cause of these issues in America.
  12. A few more thoughts to work through.. For those playing along, is there anything we can come up with as a prize? On that note, how do we settle ties? Are we keeping the same "team" all season? with total points adding up at the end.. Or are we picking who we play on any given week?
  13. Count me in! I think the easier this is to coordinate and manage, the better. Thoughts to consider: for the points.. I like the idea of 2 or 3 for a doe, then 1+pts for a buck.. a doe and a spike would count the same in that case.. maybe deer total +1 if taken with a bow. The added challenge is worth an extra pt? for the season.. could start 10/15 through the end of the season.
  14. That's a stud Gman! Did @Chef run a bracket this year? I've been watching for it since I was late to the party last year..
  15. I'm realizing that the far side of the property I hunt is not ideal for pm hunts. Lots of deer, but mostly at last light. If I were to shoot, recover, clean and drag, it would be near midnight by the time I get home. And that's assuming the deer falls in sight. Not something I really want to mess around with on a work night. At least, not this early in the season. I'll have to rethink my strategy. With that said, I saw 8 doe, 2 fawns, and 4 bucks. I drew back on a doe. I was on the ground and stalked to 15yds, but she spooked when I drew back.
  16. Been in since 3. Wind not as bad as i thought, but swirling more than I expected. Was planning to sit in the elevated box. The dead tree next to it is moving a lot in the wind though and so i decided to sit on the ground.
  17. My buddy dropped a big 10 pt last night just west of where I hunt. Encourages me that they're up and moving in spite of the breeze.
  18. House chores for me this morning. Headed in around 2 for an afternoon sit. Calling for 35mph wind gusts. I don't love that but it won't keep me out of the woods.
  19. Congrats @heavuser! I saw six buck and two dough. None were in bow range but all were in rifle range. Also played peek-a-boo with this guy for a few minutes.
  20. Up and in. Cold with a light NE breeze in 8a. Good luck today!
  21. Could've used another year or two..
  22. If you end up getting a dedicated camcorder from Amazon or anywhere else, just make sure to read through the specs. The one in the link you posted didn't have auto focus which might be an issue if you're trying to zoom in before the shot.
  23. Maybe low-lying areas that hold too much moisture for the trees?
