  3. Playing with camera this early morning happend to catch a metorite streaking past in one pic ( faint diagonal line top right part of photo)a few other star shots and moonrise
  4. Here is problem with the data.. its estimated. Fall take would exceed spring take hens are allowed. Again insuffient data. How many of the take are young of the year birds? Those are most likely to be winter kill anyway. Predators and farming practices are ignored in all data. The rise of hawks and owls along with decrease of tall grass fields as ethanol production pulled many fallow fields back into production. New farming practices of silage cutting earlier and more often due to taxes on storage and labor cost for bale hay production. Habitat change.. woods that were intermediate or young in the 90s are now mature as people dont cut trees as its bad. Or refuse to cut mast bearing trees at all. Its a complicated issue but i know by putting effort into habitat and predator control my local birds are increasing in number. A few issues Not to mention the issue with cold wet springs on nest and poult survival.
  5. This is by far the best ladder stand ive found. Throw away the nylon seat and get a good therma seat.. full platform seat folds up and is steel bar instead of web seat.. squirrel proof nothing worse than getting to a stand to find web seat chew up or sun rotted.. never have that issue with this stand just carry in and out your seat and wiĺl last years Downfall is directions are sketchy. Need to lay out all your bolts and make sure your using the proper one as they are close . Have 6 of these now and friend has 2. Im 225lb plus weight of gear is not an issue. My oldest stand is now 6 years old . Newest is 2 months.. on sale now.
  6. I got rid of my kayaks in favor of canoes.. like them a lot more amd much more comfortable imo
  7. Most sweet corn today are look good tasteless hybrids . Same with most fruit and veggies. Need to find a farmer/ grower that like heirloom varieties if you want flavor.

    Youth hunt.

Well looks like 3 possibly 4 youths like up for hunt this year. Should be good time . Ill have to take one as 1 per mentor and friend has 2 children to hunt this year. Plots are in need some rain. Hoping a few doe are taken but never opposed to nice buck or bear being shot. Will only have one family member to participate my niece, she has a couple of years left. Every one else is friends children or a recomended kid from local school program. Anyone else getting spots set for kids already?
  9. I dont take it that way im impressed he want to learn to do gobbler well and then offer it his clients.. just trying to say your better off being really good at a few things than have your mediocre attempts become part of your reputation.. taxidermy is not an easy thing to do properly. Ive seen way to many mounts by guys that can do anything that are not quality . Imo better to specialize and be known as the best.. i looked hard for a giy that did bear very well.. a lot do them and ear look like mickey mouse . Not natural or lips and nose not right. Then look at a lot of small game mounts and some are better than others at them smiles on foxes or coyotes.. . My neighbor down the road does fish exceptionally well and does them for many other local taxidemists that simply upcharge their customers for his work... cut out the middle man and save 5 dollars plus an inch... I meant nothing other than thats a business your better off beging very good and not doing mounts your not going to do as well as your reputation suffer and as that does so does your business..
  10. I use to go to new Brunswick for bear.. bait for bear is best and most effective way to get one.. the bear ive taken in ny are on trail and incidental during deer season.. if i could bait i could consistantly know when a bear was here vs trail cam photos about every 2 weeks.. and try and guess day its coming back thru.
  11. You will learn where the $ is. My uncle was trying to retire and specilized in deer raised his prices crazy high 750 a head 8 years ago still had people lining up.. did many heads for big name hunters across the country.. crazy cool custome mounts. But all deer or deer family ( elk , caribou, mule deer , key deer fallow ect.. ) its a profession where mastering one is better than jack of all trades master of none. Full body mounts of deer jumping. Drinking out of puddles in woods... becomes art vs just a mount.
  12. Got 3 plots fertalized today... picked up some winterwheat for another spot ..
  13. Got stung by 30 or so bees... lol
  14. Just get form saying lost title when you buy it have him fill it out.. you pay for new title. So take it off price .
  15. You miss them but did nothing to pass this traditions ans habits on. The oldtimers teachings to you were wasted and they werent past on... is it this generations nature that different or did we just fail as care takers and teachers...
  16. If bike is old thats all you have i sold my old willys pick up with one. Will say transferable right on registration. No title needed
  17. Good luck .its not they are not as prevalent. You can't bait here.. bear are lazy and will go great distances for a free meal.
  18. Looks good. My advice is get to the point you specialize in certain game. No taxidermist is great at everything. Some do amazing fish .others deer and other birds... its better to be great at a few than mediocre at a lot. I respect the fact you tried out full turkey before taking them on. Keep up the good work!
  19. Glad your escaping.. historically cities are the harbinginger of colaps of civilization.. people are not suppose to live that close together. Where skills are lost and you become dependent on others..
  20. A good comfortable stand. Game ears if your not use to hearing game vs being a visual hunter. Kiĺl a lot more game with your ears. Especially bowhunting. Good rangefinder and learn when and how to use it. Mark trees bushes shrubs before the game your after shows up. A good knife. And learn how to use it properly and sharpen it. Never really needed binoculars as mu shooting is usually under 50 yards and the woods is thick enough not to see further. Before game cams i used them to monitor game.out in fields . But cameras show me whats around a lot better. Out west where it more spot and stalk i can see the need.
  21. To bad you wernt looking a couple of months ago . A whole scout camp was for sale 1 large lakes 390 acres house and cabins.. sold pretty quick lot of nice buck there and had very limited hunting as ranger was living there and only allowed 5 on it.
  22. I have steered many deer . Blocking trail as a juncture not in middle is key many time the will just go around the obstruction. The newest blockage i put in is a pond. It blocked 9 trails that use to cross a swale randomly and now they have to go around either end of the pond. Makes a easy pinch point and i got a new emeraĺd and golden shiner pond
  23. Land should have diversity woods / fields and a water source. Most timberland in ny is hi-graded. You may have big trees but if you dont know the type/ species you can buy a barren wasteland as ecosystems go. You can change that but it takes years and a lot of effort. Properly managed the property will pay for itself. In timber value and recreation. My place started out as a hunting camp. But i soon discovered all my free time was being spent here. So i built and moved. Its an hour and 15 min to work but i couldn't afford what i have anywhere near the suburbs. As for 130 in plus bucks they are here but most dont want to put time or effort in to get them. Proper habitat is key and a large enough parcel to allow them to grow up.
  24. Nesting habitat is gone is biggest issue the fallow fields by me are now in corn production as ethanol is raised the price of corn for feed. Hay is now cut very early in hopes of getting 3 cuttings for silage.. june is cutting month where it use to be july and nest would be hatched. Ealry cutting either destroys the nest or opens it up for easy predation. Birds have a territory and wont nest to colse to each other. So 1 field may only hold 1 or 2 nest depending on its size ..eliminite hundreds of acres of hay field and reproductive success drops way off.
  25. Well looks like rain is about over.. looks like i got about 4 hours of light rain today. Have to check rain gage when i get home.. should of helped a lot especially the fact it was evening and sun didnt evaporate it right away ....
