Cathy Nelson shot this interesting photo recently of a great blue heron.

She wrote, "It's a frequent visitor to our backyard pond in Oswego."

I shared the photo with bird expert and author, Laura Erickson, who I consult with from time to time on bird matters. She said it looked to be a young bird, most likely one that hatched in 2012.

"And it apparently swallowed a fish not long before being photographed," she said.
